Some people are very hard to please. Some complaining that episode 3 was boring due to a lack of action/zombies and then other saying the next episode was too post apocalyptic and similar to other zombie/post-apocalyptic films or TV. I've enjoying every episode for what it is so far. Great TV.

People thought episode 3 was boring? I would say that was one of the best episodes of any TV for I have ever seen.

A few in this thread weren't that enthused and apparently IMBD is flooded with 1 star reviews (or whatever the minimum is). Presumably gamers with a smattering of homophobes. Then again IMDb is a very silly place.

I loved it. A really great episode.

Yeah no surprise there. I know nothing about the games and was not a walking dead fan so was apprehensive about this show but the first two episodes were really good and the third one was award winning really. I don't think I've seen an episode that hit me like that from start to finish.

I'm a huge Parks and Recreation fan so first reaction seeing Bill was yeah obviously Ron would survive this then oh wow he's clearly gay and then as it unfolds it was just so compelling.

It really makes you care so much for the characters and that's because the acting, the casting and the storytelling is just spot on. Down to the last scene in the car when the tape played the song Bill was singing on the piano was just perfect

Glad I've seen a post mentioning the White Lotus as it was bugging me where I've seen Frank before.

So just caught up on the show as well as this abomination of a thread

I played the first game when it came out (didn't pay the second) and apart from the opener, don't remember shit so I'm watching it as a non-gamer.

Think overall it's pretty good, captured the vibe of the world well, good acting etc. Not the best show ever as some people are saying... But not surprised it's good considering it was adapted by Craig Mazin (listen to his podcast Script Notes... It's brilliant).

As for ep3... It was fine. Might have been better to have dropped it later in the season to really contrast between the horrors of the present against the lives of those two dudes. I do wonder if it would have had the same impact on audiences had it been a heterosexual couple?

Anyway, look forward to more eps and reading how much more stupid this thread can get

Just a minority. I think we pay more attention to that than is necessary. Does look like it got review bombed on IMDB though.

For me the show had the impact because
it showed a closeted gay man finally finding love and fulfilment. It's difficult to replicate that dynamic in a heterosexual way without it looking pretty derivative or sleazy.

Man finds attractive young woman in ditch and she seduces him....that's like a bad porno script. Or woman prepper finds a man in a ditch and man seduces her...that's potentially an even dodgier message.

I know what you're saying - the homophobia of a lot of gamers have affected the ratings / potentially made others champion the episode beyond it's actual merit. I think the writer was badly burned by the homophobia surrounding the last of us 2 game and has decided to go for the jugular and write an episode he knew they would actively hate. It's placement early on in the series I think is a Feck you to those gamers so he can write the rest of the series in peace.

I think it would have had more impact had it been shown later in the series, particularly if we'd had a chance to meet them as part of Ellie and Joel's journey. I think that would have been totally devastating.

Agree with all of that. The writer is gay as far as I know. Irrespective, looking forward to more.

I've read a lot of comments like "best opening 3 eps ever" etc quite a lot. It's really not.
On here? or just in general?

In general i wouldnt be surprised cos ive seen things like TWD is the best show ever on twitter and elsewhere. I do think the episodes weve gotten so far have been really good though.

Yeah if you searched [insert show] is the best show ever online you’d find someone who thinks that about anything. Got to remove other people’s opinions on things and not let if affect how you see something.

Nah just general. Here, it's all talk about game spoilers, eating alone whilst smiling like a maniac and of course, having men cum in someone's ass

How is this generally received by the games hardcore fanbase ?
Pretty well overall from what I can see. Really depends if it's the type of fan who loves the games for what they are or one that needs an exact copy shown on screen.

Hard to say, I'm sure you'd be able to find subreddits full of game fans hating it.

As someone who's played through the game numerous times and rates it as one of my favourites of all time, I think I qualify as a "hardcore" fan. I'd say they've done an excellent job so far. It's made with a lot of respect for the source material (unsurprising considering who's involved) but adapted in a way that makes sense for tv. Visually it's stunning and most of the acting performances are great. Not much to complain about honestly.

The 4th episode to me wasn't as great as a standalone as the 3rd, but the episode was a setup episode that did a good job making me interested in the next one.
I suspect payoff from this episode will come in the next or the one after.

Tbf there was also a meltdown about the acting from a few seconds of the trailer that was hilarious too

It's been a shambles. But fun to read too.

People care too much it seems

It's just a TV show based off of an ok game, chill guys.

I can't speak for anybody else. I love the first game. It's one of my favourite games ever. I think the show is good, but nowhere near the same level as the game. What we have here probably makes more sense for tv, but I like the game a lot more.

Or if you're the sort of fan who thinks Bella doesn't even look like acting is her thing at all.

Actual opinion I saw.

I suppose it is the case as the same director is directing episodes 4 and 5.

So half way through this weeks and they've just threw in a bunch of new people, Kathleen, Henry etc without any explanation. Feel like I've missed part of an episode or something.

I bought the first game four times. Played through it about half a dozen times and spent countless hours in Factions (the multiplayer side of it). I really like the show.

That sentiment is echoed in my group of friends. The show has a great balance of invoking things from the game - sometimes 1 to 1 shots and dialogue - all the while expanding and/or giving you new stuff each episode.

Love the games, I'll fight to the death against anyone who says they're not amazing.

Love the show so far. It's not just an adaptation but a refinement of the work, and expanded on the lore whilst making it more palatable to the TV format. It's not perfect, but neither is the game. Nothing is, all that matters is that it just feels right.

I can see why some people are upset that there's been some changes, but there's nothing that raises too many eyebrows as far as I'm concerned. If other people think they have then, if I'm being honest, they're being unfairly protective. That's probably a gamer trait, though, as games immerse you in a way that no other medium can realistically compete with.

Weird. I didn't have you marked down as a cnut until now. Jokes
I mean, I enjoyed the game don't get me wrong but it felt like a cinematic experience rather than... a game... if that makes sense.

I never felt the same connection to this as I did with something like Silent Hill, Street Fighter, Hollow Knight etc.

But yes, I am definitely a cnut, you're not wrong

Don't forget that Episode 5 airs tonight/tomorrow (2am Saturday UK, 3am most of Europe) so when there are posts before the usual air time their spoilers might be for something you didn't know was available yet.

Updated the thread title to hopefully warn those that will inevitably forget this.
