Goes to show what a cracking player he was that the teams would go to such great extents to fit him in, and that he was willing to put himself through that. The average modern player would have sat on his arse and blame the traffic jam.

I was thinking about that midfield with Matthäus earlier today... what a bastard of a midfield. I'd argue Lerby was actually the better player back then, even in '86, and it takes Matthäus highest peak around Italia '90 to surpass him. IIRC Lerby took free kicks, not Matthäus, tells you a thing or two about the sort of rocket he was capable of producing.

The simple fact he was brought on as the successor to Breitner and that he didn't disappoint goes a long way to know roughly what his actual level/standing was int he game.

:mad: On a serious note, I thought about Careca at the start if my other options were pushed up in price. But 10 millions for Klinsmann who suits the system perfectly as he played with Sammer as a libero for so long is well worth it.

Works his socks off in the defense and offensively he doesn't require the ball at his feet to bully defenders with great runs and physicality. Won't steal Maradona's show.

I told this before that I have a real mancrush on Klinsmann. What a force of nature, and to have someone leading the line, he's incredibly ideal. I prefer him over the usual favourite for this role - Vieri.

He was the one I had as the best non-tp in the "finisher" list when the draft started so I agree with you. As I would ideally field a player who requires as little ball as possible while still remaining equally good, I couldn't wish for a better option. Got lucky he went for 10 millions, if others would have been after some non-tp strikers in the same mould I would have had to chuck up a lot more.

Can just see him rising to the occasion with all the through-balls and clear chances he will have with Maradona next to him.

Reminds me of one of my biggest disappointments :( Finding out Cruyff had tried sign Francescoli for Barca but Racing Paris asking for too much money. I would have loved to see Francescoli at Barca in the early Dream Team years :mad: Instead they went for Romerito, who never quite adapted to European football.

Not exactly. As I told you, I was only going to start if there was a possibility of building that side around Michael Laudrup. As trippy wasn't answering I asked crappy if he would be fine waiting a wee bit on the Sagnol deal when it re-emerged (I thought my trippy deadline was Stam at around 4pm today). He said if I wanted him I should bid, which is why we ended up with that mini episode of starting, bidding, quitting and reinstating bids before their original deadline when it would have been best to just wait on trippy. I just didn't know when he would be back online.
