I think he has a face and attitude as punchable as Guendouzi, which is a lot to say.

When things go wrong everything and everyone seems worse than what they really are.

Trent has never been a good defender.
Yet he was a key part of one of the best teams in recent football history.

There is something very wrong in that group.

So much so that I wouldn't even be surprised if there had been a party the night before the game.

Some looked like they hadn't slept or still had some substance in their blood

I don't know about you guys, but this is a clear example of a player blatantly downing tools. I remember watching him in the two finals against us last season, and in the second half of the season in general, and thinking he'd made some improvements on his weakness, he was tracking runs, being alert, staying disciplined etc.

In these clips, it really just looks like he doesn't give a feck anymore.
Yeah it seems a bit more than a player not being good at defending.

He’s blatantly walking around with the “I couldn’t care less attitude”. Even if you are poor at defending, it doesn’t stop you from reacting by running back and trying to repair your errors. But he’s just letting them go past and actually not caring about it.

TAA was one of the key players in their CL and PL winning seasons in which they also conceded very few goals, so accomodating him has absolutely been more than justified in the past.

Even with that though they must have been hoping that he'd actually improve defensively as he got older, requiring them to do less to cover for his weaknesses. Instead he seems to have gotten worse, adding a lack of intensity and effort to his already lacklustre defending.

Maybe that lack of development is simply down to a lack of competition? He's been absolutely nailed on in that side for years despite his flaws and the constant narrative around him has been that his attacking ability is what justifies his place in the team. Maybe he's just bought into that himself and stopped thinking that's a weakness he even needs to focus on? Because he certainly looks like someone who doesn't think his place is under any threat or that defending is any more than a secondary part of his job.

If you look a bit further back in the build up to the goal though, you’ll see when Liverpool lose the ball Trent shows absolutely no desire to get back. He just casually jogs back which forces Gomez to go out wide to close player down and Fabinho to fill in at centre back.

After that, yes Fabinho and Gomez did poor but Trent’s desire to get back was shocking.
To be fair to Trent here Gomez has the ball and loses it on the right-hand side of the defence, which engages him in a 1v1 in the RB area. Nothing Trent can do about that, and as soon as Gomez loses the ball, you see Trent accelerate back. All he can then do is drop in as cover, and with Fabinho covering Gomez' position, Trent goes into the DM slot. He does his job there in my view.

Funny thing is (because it hasn't really been mentioned in all the criticism) I thought Trent was clearly culpable for the first penalty award. He drops in behind Gomez as protection, but leaves the midfielder free, who has the clear shot at goal. Structurally I can see why he went in to cover Gomez's position, but would have been better picking up the spare man rather than, what was in that attack, a meaningless zone.

I feel for him. He clearly hasn't earned his proper big boy football socks yet and you can tell it's weighing on him.

That’s what I thought when I saw the clips. Fab also doesn’t cover himself in glory in one of the goals

The success and form has definitely gotten to his head, he was never amazing defensively but he used to put in effort. Now he thinks he is Beckham on the ball so it's not his job to do anything defensively (ignoring that Beckham was a crazy hard worker). Just completely downed tools.

He will end up costing Klopp his job, teams have realised you can target that side of their defence.

Guess Klopp's only options are to either hide him away somewhere where he won't be exposed or just drop him.

What's the point of having a RB that can't defend.
What we mean is that he is not a top defender but he is definitely world class going forward
the way he passes the ball reminds me of David Beckham
I just like him so much as player

This is what happens when you make somebody untouchable and blow smoke up their ass for too long. He's doing a Rashford now.

Klopp needs to get some serious RB competition and stop making out like he's the worlds best winger/fullback hybrid the world has ever seen.

This guy thinks his job only starts once he enters the opposition half, it's ludicrous. A sheer basic lack of effort. If I was his team mate i'd be having some serious words in the dressing room.

WAY too much ego. We've all said it and seen it before, but now the Scousers are getting punished they are starting to recognise too.

He needs a spell on the bench. Ramsey is only 19 but he surely cannot be any worse then Trent has been these past six games.

The problem with TAA is that in 80% of the games - his offensive contribution is so great, and he is put under so little pressure defensively - it's worth it. But good teams can both target TAA's frailties, and even have the ability to do so. And as the standard of P.L-sides improves (and it's a lot more competitive now than it was just 2 seasons ago) - the more pressure he will be put under.

Seems like there's something up with him. I get that he's never been excellent at defending but he's not even tracking runners or making any effort defensively now. He's just jogging around the pitch.

Maybe needs some time out the team to rest and give the young scottish lad a chance.

Not as bad as the Napoli game. He’s clearly being targeted though.

The woman on BT on the analysis is saying Trent was recorded as the fastest player at Liverpool so it’s not his pace that’s the issue. Fastest player?! Wtf. No chance.

Its like he is doing it to protest as if defending his beneath him, he only wants to play attack. Just like the kids during recess in 5th grade.

He was absolutely awful for the goal conceded however it was also a good run.

However, if you watch the chance Daley Blind should have scored, watch Trent ‘marking’ him. He knows he is there the whole way but nonchalantly jogs into the box and just ignores him. It’s as bad as I’ve ever seen at this level.

At least now it's obvious to everyone why Southgate doesn't like him. His style of football absolutely does not work for the way Southgate wants to set up or play.

No chance. He’s dangerous attacking from the back where he can see the whole game in front of him, but the downside to that is, he’s a crap defender.

Klopps dilemma is have him in the team and be great going forward or not have in the team and be greater at defending!

He'd be great in a back 5, I'm amazed that it's taken this long for teams to start figuring out that he can't defend, considering Klopp left him out against Barca when he was a youngster due to his inability to defend.

Don't think he'd excel as a winger, or a CM and obviously his flaws as a RB in a 4 man defence are currently being exposed - the main question being, is it justifiable to build a team around a wing back? Considering they've invested heavily in a battering ram up front and Salah has only one way to go, then for 'pool who aren't flush with cash, my guess would be yes.

He’s an incompetent defender, however he is a special player.
Once Salah drops another level or fecks off, they should build the team around Trent.
Back 3 system could benefit him I reckon.
