Honestly didn't think him leaving would make me upset tbh. The whole 2010 sage really left a sour taste in the mouth but at the same time he gave us he's career. I really don't know how to feel, all I can say is thanks for everything Legend.
who the hell voted no?!!
name and shame I say.
Completely agree Rooney in his prime was played many times out of position & never sighed out of his defensive responsibilities. A young Rooney with so much of passion aggressiveness was a joy to watch. He was a brilliant team player and contributed to lot of assists during his time here at clubThe most selfless player in the modern game. Played out of position to accommodate others, and never whinged about it. The times he chose to leave the club, in my honest opinion, were times when we looked weak. After we sold Ronaldo and didn't bring in anyone of his quality for example. A footballing man through and through, and a club legend to boot.
There are two reasons to quit a job when "everything looks perfect":I voted no because he threw his teammates under the bus and questioned the ambition of the club and Sir Alex looking for a bigger contract and threatening to move to city. As a person, I don't consider him a united legend but as a player looking at his achievements for the club he should be considered a united legend. I lost all affinity for him all those years ago but I don't begrudge him and always wanted him to succeed for us. I'll never forgot the reaction of Gary Neville interviewing Paul Scholes just after him and Sir Alex retired and they burst out laughing at the news Rooney handed in a transfer request. In closing, superb player in his youth and prime but a leech in his later years.
You seem to be overlooking the fact that almost immediately after the contract debacle he put in the best 18 months of his career, playing a critical role in leading us to the Champions League final. It's worth remembering that this was just the 4th time in our long history that we'd reached that height of European football and it's entirely possible we won't see it again for many years. Rooney was pivotal in getting us to 2 of them.I voted no because he threw his teammates under the bus and questioned the ambition of the club and Sir Alex looking for a bigger contract and threatening to move to city. As daft as questioning Gazza? Because you wouldn't get a comprehensible answer? In time, the very idea of questioning his legendary status will seem as daft as questioning the likes of Shearer or Gazza.
Anyone pretending he'll be remembered as anything less than an absolute legend are fooling themselves. Or just being a dick.
Totally agree with this. Thanks to him for everything good he's done for the club, he's a UTD great but not a legend IMO. I just can't forget those 2 times he blackmailed the club threatening to go to the opposition clubs.
He obviously was the season his injury cost us the CL tie against Bayern. He was never our best player.
A little bit of column A and a little bit of column B! At the time of posting, 63 reckon no??? Must be the ABUs or posters posing as Reds.In time, the very idea of questioning his legendary status will seem as daft as questioning the likes of Shearer or Gazza.

I just want to say, thank you so much for this. Just couldn't stand the bile that comes out on the forums sometimes and this is a good reprieve.I know there are a lot of people disliking constant Rooney threads (it will probably stop now that he's leaving us). There are a lot of posters constantly going about making some childish jokes about how he belongs in a drive through, or is a constant liability, etc.
I would rather celebrate his career with us than remember him as a liability. He was beyond great for over a decade, I'm sure posters would prefer to celebrate that rather than allow for the last 2-3 seasons to take over the memories.
Thank you Wayne, legend of a player.
Sorry I just fail to understand your thinking. You may dislike him but how can someone who broke his club and country scoring records NOT be a legend? Not taking anything away from his achievements but to be honest, he wouldn't have got a better package at any other club. We were always his best option.
He spent most of his United career under our greatest ever manager, Sir Alex, was playing during a time where we were winning almost everything, managed to play at a club which were was a stones throw from where he grew up and had the luxury of us being able to pay him the best wages.
What were his other options? Go abroad? I always felt Rooney wasn't the type who could settle abroad and he knew that, so that was never really an option. In the end its more a case of, we were the best option available to him rather than him staying because he loved United. He would have gone if the other options were better. Not a club legend for me.
If your all time top scorers and winner of every single trophy over a 13 year period isn't a club legend then I'm not really sure who actually qualifies as a legend. In time, the very idea of questioning his legendary status will seem as daft as questioning the likes of Shearer or Gazza.

What does that matter? Was he a legend? YesHe was never our best player.
What is your stance on him blackmailing the club twice, threatening to leave and join our EPL rivals?Sorry I just fail to understand your thinking. You may dislike him but how can someone who broke his club and country scoring records NOT be a legend?
It doesn't matter. It's quite simple. He is the club top scorer therefore he's a club legend. His record may not be broken again for decades, if ever. What is your stance on him blackmailing the club twice, threatening to leave and join our EPL rivals?
Ronaldo said we treated him like a slave (as well as trying to leave twice before he did) and there are still some who act like he's the greatest thing in Manchester United's history so I don't think Rooney was all that bad in comparison. What is your stance on him blackmailing the club twice, threatening to leave and join our EPL rivals?
He was. In 2009-2010 and 2011-2012 he was far and away our best player. He was our best player in the second half of 2010-2011 too, when we won the league and reached UCL final, with Rooney playing the best football of his career. He was never our best player.

People put too much emotional thought into off the field stuff. George best is a United legend and look at how he treated the club. It doesn't matter
He said we treated him as a slave after he tried to force his transfer but SAF refused to sell him, which is normal.Ronaldo said we treated him like a slave (as well as trying to leave twice before he did) and there are still some who act like he's the greatest thing in Manchester United's history so I don't think Rooney was all that bad in comparison.
I don't disagree but being our best player is a bit of an irrelevant point anyway. Show me where Denis Irwin or Ole were our best player and are they legends? Even if Rooney wasn't the main man at any point it wouldn't make a difference. He was. In 2009-2010 and 2011-2012 he was far and away our best player. He was our best player in the second half of 2010-2011 too, when we won the league and reached UCL final, with Rooney playing the best football of his career.
It could be argued that he was our best player also in 2005-2006, just on his second season here.
I don't see how there is a debate if he is a United legend or not. It shouldn't even be a question at this stage. Yep, he was horrible for the last 2 seasons, but that doesn't mean that he wasn't great for 10 years here.
