My "which fictional character death" thread went well, so I thought I'd ask more about death... No, no. You're welcome.

I've never witnessed one so shocking as what Princess Diana would have been - in terms of how suddenly it happened (no illness etc), how dramatic it was and how famous the person was.

I'll be inconsolable when Sir Alex leaves us. But otherwise I can't think of one that stands out. Maybe Trigger from Only Fools

(Side question: I feel like we're lacking a truly shocking death of an extremely famous person over the last 20 years... Or am I missing someone?)

David Bowie's passing, a couple of days after the release of Blackstar, was a big big shock that left me feeling empty for a little while.

That was a weird thing. I bought that as a birthday present for my Dad. I got it the day before Bowie died and gave it as a gift after he died.

Chester Bennington, both how it happened and for what he meant to me.

I grew up watching Steve Irwin and that hit quite hard. No one since really I don’t think.

Yeah, same. I’ve never even been a big Bowie fan but for some reason this made me sadder than any other celebrity death before him.

Kurt Cobain was a massive shock but I don’t think I felt particularly sad at the time. Mainly just surprised.

I was a bit fed up when Kurt died, but I felt better after some cnut came up to me and said "Nevermind"

Robert Hardy - I grew up (still do) adoring anything James Herriot related. Robert Hardy as Seigfreid was genuinely one of my heroes growing up, I wanted to be just like him. Seigfried in the books was a great character but Hardy not only brought him to life but made him even more erratic and formidable while giving him a fallible side too. It was so expertly done that I just fell in love with the tv show, even though liberties with James Herriots writing had taken place. I even started wearing tweed, brogues and mustard waistcoats for a while. Completely mortified when he died.

Amy Winehouse too. Such a talented young woman and to watch that uncontrollable slide into oblivion, her death seemed inevitable and barely a surprise when it happened.

I'm mostly unmoved by celebrity deaths, but was particularly sad when Robin Williams left us. And although he didn't die, watching Eriksen collapse on the field during a match was pretty shocking.

Kobe Bryant. I still can't comprehend it. I was not even a fan of him, actually hated him as a player for some reason. When he got killed in the helicopter crash I was in disbelief. He was so much more likeable to me after his retirement. He was committed to excellence in everything he does.

Many other people died in that crash as well. Fathers, children, pilot. :/

Kurt Cobain by a mile. Not when it happened as I was 9 and wasn’t aware of him. But later on when I got into and fell in love with his / their music and to this day. It’s the one celebrity death that still saddens me. The rest of the people I’ve been a ‘fan’ of are all still around.

Like a few have already said it has to be Steve Irwin.

I was 16 year old but I’d spent all my childhood watching him and when I heard news of his death I was absolutely devastated. I’ve been to Australia zoo a few times and I’m glad that he’s still a big part of it In spirit. His family are a credit to him.

Paul Walker for me.

Me and my high school best mate used to watch every F&F movie together at the cinema and then my mate died in a car crash... A few years later, Paul Walker died in a car crash.

Now I watch them with my wife, who constantly is sitting there reminding me how unrealistic the film is... Safe to say, it's not the same experience

This exactly, I always used to watch them as a family and they seemed so unaffected and naturally happy. But then, with that lifestyle, who wouldn't? I also saw his wife give an interview after his death and it was so earnest and happy, it brought a real lump to my throat.

Elliott Smith was a big one for me. David Attenborough is one I'm dreading too.

I found out about Elliott Smith because I was working in HMV and word came through from head office to stick as many of his albums as we had on a prominent display as they expected a rush on because he'd died. Capitalism at it's most heartfelt.

A big one for me was Norm Macdonald back in 2021. I had been watching loads of his stuff during the andemic and had just put an episode of his sitcom on pause to go and cook some food when I read the headline he'd died.

I'll never understand how people feel anything more than momentary sadness/sympathy when people they don't personally know die.

'WTF Is' was a solid series. Lad was sharp when it comes to criticism, and every argument was backed up by almost hour long vids full of personal observations and lots of logical statements which he could probably make on daily basis !

He could easily be a sport commentator with that voice.
