Amazing to think 24 hours ago LVG appeared reluctant to drop either Rooney or RVP from the starting eleven. But one of them is guaranteed to be benched now after the arrival of Falcao.

I know this is a formation thread but i'll wait until the deadline has passed before i make my team!

feck it's hard to do our best lineup with this squad now! I'll give it a go...

--------------De Gae--------------

Rafael----Jones------Rojo-------Shaw

---------------Blind-----------------

-------Herrera--------Mata-----------

di Maria-------Falcao-----------Rooney

Then we have RVP as our super sub, Januzaj as a fast winger when legs are tired, Ashley Young as the water boy.

I want width and I think there is a fine balance to this.

433 and it can also change to 4231 without an subs. Rooney playing poorly? switch to 4231 and bring on Mata.

Rafa..Jones..Rojo..Shaw
..Herrera..Blind..Rooney
Januzaj....Falcao...Di Maria

And I dont fecking care we have 12men on the pitch... if forced to play according to rules in 11 lets drop de Gea and play powerplay. We'll outscore them.

Can people please stop putting arrows on these formations as if you have some deep tactical knowledge about player movement

It looks retarded

That's the only way you can cram all our signings into a team, unless you play Blind at RB. Looks pretty good to me!

In my opinion Man City formation is the best suited to what we have now.

Instead of

------------------- Hart
Zabaleta - Demichelis - Kompany - Clichy
-------- Fernando --- Yaya Toure
----------- Nasri ------ Silva
---------------- Jovetic
---------------- Aguero

we have

------------------- De Gea
Rafael ------- Jones ------- Rojo ------- Shaw
--------------- Blind --- Ander Herrera
--------------- Mata ------ Di Maria
------------------- Rooney
------------------- Falcao

Of course it looks similar only on paper. Falcao isn't Aguero, Ander Herrara isn't Yaya Toure etc.

Good ol' 4-4-2. Maybe a diamond with Mata behind the two strikers and Di Maria pulling wide when he can could work too.

We almost have the perfect squad to play 433.

Dave/Lindegaard
Rafael/Valencia - Jones/Evans - Smalling/Rojo - Shaw/Blind
Blind/Carrick
Herrera/Carrick - Mata/Rooney
DiMaria/Young - Falcao/RvP - Januzaj/Welbeck

A diamond makes the most sense right now. It's a better fit than the 3-5-2 which our defence is struggling to get to grips with but keeps some of the same benefits.

Nice formation. Would love to see that.

You can play Jonesinstead of either Rojo or Smalling, or instead of Shaw.
Rooney can be swapped with Mata, RVP with Falcao.

De Gea

Rafael - Smalling - Evans - Shaw

Januzaj - A. Herrera - Blind - Di Maria

Rooney/Mata

Falcao/Rooney

De Gea

Rafael - Smalling - Rojo - Shaw

Herrera - Carrick - Di Maria

Mata

Rooney - Falcao

Carrick and Blind rotating, center backs rotating until a partnership is formed. I'm basically writing off RvP as anything more then a good player if indeed he does need surgery.

First choice formation.
De Gea
Rafael-Jones-Rojo-Shaw
Herrera-Carrick-Di Maria
Januzaj-Falcao-Rooney
Alternative formation
De Gea
Jones-Evans-Rojo
Rafael-Herrera-Carrick-Shaw
Mata
RvP-Falcao
Both have obvious issues so there's no need to point them out. But they are at least vaguely realistic.

Damn that is one hell of a lineup compared to what we ended with last season.

Maybe a bit risky with Mata and Rooney in midfield but this is my line up. If anything i doubt we would be dull to watch.

While I still want us to work towards a 4-3-3 the signing of Falcao makes me think thats not likely. I still think Van Gaal will play 3-5-2 but I think the diamond looks the best bet at the moment. Allows two strikers and someone (Mata) behind them but means playing Di Maria in central midfield and I'd much rather see him play as a wide forward/winger.

I think it also needs a fit Rafael and Shaw for those full back positions as thats where you rely on width to come from in a 4-4-2 diamond.

Di Maria is much better in that position though, completely world class. One of the benefits of playing that system is that it gets the best out of Di Maria.

Assuming Falcao and Blind get confirmed today, and that everyone is fit.

De Gea
Rafael Jones Rojo Shaw
Carrick Herrera
di Maria Rooney Januzaj
Falcao

Subs; Lindegaard, Smalling, Evans, Valencia, Blind, Mata, RvP
This really does look like our best 11 as it would bring balance, width, and without doubt goals! The only concern would be Jones and Rojo giving away tons of free kicks as they are both very aggressive defenders.

LVG will have a tough choice when it comes to picking his striker.

You'd bench our best midfielder?
Well i didn't say it was balanced side, it was just an effort to get most of our best attacking players into a 4-3-3. I don't think Herrera can really play as a DM or i would have put him there. I couldn't fit RVP in either.

Insane really.

Two of them ahead of Mata with a functioning midfield and defence will be fantastic. I think Falcao will compliment both Rooney and Van Persie better than they compliment each other.

4-3-3, gets the best of Di Maria, Blind, Herrera, Januzaj and Falcao. Rooney can switch with Di Maria during the game.

We can also switch easily to 4-2-3-1:

BUT Blind and Herrera are not suited to playing in two man midfield, Di Maria is good as a winger but not as good as midfielder.
Rooney is out of position in both formations, but I prefer him wide than in behind the striker.

------Falcao---------RVP--------(or Rooney, depending on who is in form)
--------------Mata---------------
Di Maria-Blind-Herrera-Januzaj
------Rojo---Evans---Jones-----

I would play this against teams we have to beat and in the harder matches I would swap out Januzaj for Rafael and possibly Blind for Shaw and play Di Maria in the middle.

The options are endless with our substitutions with this set up. We can move Blind to a RWB position and swap out Januzaj for Rafael and play a 5-3-2 if we are a goal ahead wanting to defend the lead.

We can ask Rojo/Jones to alternate and push up as full-backs if we are a goal behind in the last minutes which would look like Barca's dream team who played a back 3 with two full-backs and one CB.

We can swap out RVP/Falcao/Rooney and play a 4-2-3-1.

I would feel comfortable with us scoring goals with this set up which is our current issue.
