Why just a 4 yr contract? I could never understand giving out a 3/4 yr contract to a talented kid, a player of his talent should've been given a minimum 5 yr deal.
Kids don't always realise their potential, and the club has to protect itself. I'm sure if he does well and makes an impact his contract will be upgraded soon.

I agree but should probably mention that 5 years is the maximum contract length. It'd be both the minimum and the maximum, if that makes sense.

Yeah I'm sure the contract is something that, if he settles at United and plays his part in the squad, will be renewed in couple of seasons anyway to reflect his performances

Its not like we're going to be paying a player we signed from league 2 a salary thats going to keep him happy for 4-5 years if he improves like we hope he does

He's played there a fair bit.
Apparently so. That's not his position though. From what I've seen (1 whole game in which he was fecking shit) he is best suited to any of the 3 in a 4231.

Amazing how so many caftards can talk with such conviction about how good he is and what his best position is after watching him play one game of football.
It's because I'm that damn good. If I'm wrong I'll attempt to eat my face.

One of my colleagues is a Crewe fan (well, actually a United fan but is from Crewe) and attends most home games. It's him that told me really. Hash tag just sayin'.

I think I've seen him play four times, and would agree with CW in saying he looks at his best as one of the 3 behind a striker.

He makes bad decisions at times, but that's to be expected because he's a kid. We've signed him because he has talent, which he clearly does - it's down to him and our coaches to harness that talent and turn him into a more disciplined team player.

There's a guy who started working at my firm about 3 months ago, I was under the impression he was a Liverpool fan but it turned out recently his first football love is Crewe. He was at the play off final and I said I'd heard we'd been linked with Powell, he said it was already practically a done deal at that point according to what he'd heard and that we were getting a hell of a young player.

I've seen absolutely feck all of him apart from a few youtube vids, so I've nothing to base any expectations on other than word of mouth, but I'm pretty excited.

He looks like he has a cracking shot on him but I'm definitely reserving judgement. That ugly slap-head fella that Liverpool signed from the lower leagues (blanking on his name) had a great highlight reel too.

For me, the real positive is Fergie's close relationship with Dario Gradi. Crewe have had a lot of decent young players over the years, so it must take something special to convince Fergie to pounce.

Shelvey is 20 years old! Bit early to write him off, how old was Cleverley when he went on loan to Watford?

I'm not writing him off but I certainly wouldn't be very excited if we signed him.
Just looking at Shelvey's stats on wiki and he got 6 goals in 10 games at Blackpool last year before being called back due to Lucas's injury.

Many a Caftard would be cumming in their pants if a United youngster performed like that in the Championship.

Maybe they would. I don't rate Shelvey myself though. Which was my point.

How can you tell what position he's best suited to from a game in which he was fecking shit?

Does anyone really rate Shelvey, or a supersized MiniMi as he surely looks like...

Very average, but a fairly good shot on him.
To be fair to Pogue, that is exactly what we might be saying about Nick Powell in two years time.

Though I don't really think that you could say with true conviction that Shelvey is average, he is developing quite well for a 20 year old.

So, what is he like then? How's his touch, control, technique, dribbling, is he quick, does he like to do one touch passing? And does anyone actually know for certain if he is a midfielder or a striker? For people who have actually watched him, not what somebody's opinion after 1 match is. Never heard of him before we were linked. It obviously sir Alex saw something in him so we will see how he does.

I don't think Pogue is missing the mark at all; just a bit pessimistic, that's all.

I'm convinced beyong all doubt that Shelvey is very average. I can't see him becoming much more than average - reminds me a lot about Gibson tbf, which of course makes him a worthy PL-player, just not top class. Could see him do well for a mid-table team like Liverpool :keano:

He's amazing at everything. He's exactly like Steven Gerrard only better and not a scouser. I've seen him play once, he wasn't very good but scored a cracker, so yeah, he's fecking amazing. Honestly, I've no clue, but it sounds like he has potential so we'll just have to see how he goes

If all our CMs get fit we'll be able to emulate the 3-7-0 formation Barcelona allegedly used in the Club World Cup final

He's very quick, can dribble and is very good with both feet (I actually don't know which he favours from the one game I saw). Not sure on the passing etc as I only saw him play the once and he wasn't very good. Repeatedly made the wrong decision and pass execution was poor.

Gibson never even scored 6 goals in a season let alone in 10 games and a Wolves fan friend that I talked too said that he was 'fecking shit' on loan for them.

Regardless, Powell to me, looks to have magic in them there boots and yes Pogue I have only seen one game and numerous you tube videos.

The last player that I got a similar instinctive feeling about, that I thought that he was going to be brilliant after watching just one game, was Stevan Jovetic against Liverpool.

Powell had been linked with a host of Premier League clubs, and that tells us he certainly has potential. We'll just have to wait to find out if he ever realises this potential.

You know as well as I do that you can't rate a midfielder by goals alone. Each time I watch Shelvey I see average written across his forehead. His pace is average, his passing is average, his technique is average as is his positioning both defensively and offensively. Seems to have a good shot, and thus would score some goals. Sounds like Gibson to me...

I have seen very little of Powell, but in one of the videos he did seem a bit sluggish whilst running with the ball at his feet - is that a correct observation? Sounds weird though as Fergie said that he would opt for quick players in the future...

I can't say that he struck me as slow when I watched him but you know who does strike me as slow.............Paul Pogba. I would say that the player that Powell is most like is Lampard, is he fast?

Pogba seemed fast once up to speed, but sluggish in acceleration. Lampard isn't fast, but he times his runs perfectly - normally does feck all in a match except score though... If United had Lampard, Evra would be assist-king as he normally passes the ball 45 degrees, and United never has a player turning up in that area - around the penalty spot. Maybe Kagawa and or Powerll can rectify that.

I hope we loan him out within the Prem when the time comes.
Why? He might not need it.

I'd rather he had a years education at United before anything like that was even considered. By then he could be ready. Who knows...
