Chelsea (the saviours of football) fan.
Capello only tried to lure Scholes a few weeks before the World Cup. This was only after concerns were raised about the depth of his midfield since Barry was still recovering from injury. There was never a genuine attempt to bring him back to the England setup. You don't ignore a player for almost 3 years then try to bring him into the squad with a few weeks left and no guarantee of playing time.
He was retired. If he wanted to play he could have just made a phonecall or mentioned it to any number of his mates at United who were still playing for England. I don't blame any England manager for not "making a genuine attempt" (whatever that is) to bring him back.

They all did though! Even Jose wanted to sign Gerrard to play with Lampard. It's almost as though the people paid millions to make these sort of decisions might know something we don't.
With Makelele anchoring them, massive difference over a midfield duo of Gerrard-Lampard.

But yes, we armchair fans don't have the foggiest overall.

Germany will beat you easily, and every non United fan will probably blame Cleverley for that, or Rooney.

Yeah, it'll be Rooney's fault. Despite Gerrard's heroic efforts, Rooney (and possibly Welbeck if he plays) will forcibly lose England the game against quite beatable opposition.

I don't expect England to win or even draw but you never know with England. One game they can be terrible, the next they can be very good defensively and grind out a win or draw.

What we realise now though is the team is average from front to back as a collective unit. Of course there is quality in there, but in an England shirt you only get it in dribs and drabs from the big names.

I think it will be much closer than everyone thinks.

Germany are missing quite a few players including their entire first choice midfield.

That starting line up looks better than the one picked for the Chile game. 1-1 I reckon.

That's a far better team than the one that played against Chile - I'm going to quietly predict a 1-0 win...

Glad Lallana's getting another chance. Don't like the look of Gerrard-Cleverley though.

I just hope that Milner gets himself banned or something so he can't make the world cup squad.

Hodgson would still pick him, even if it meant putting him in full blackface and calling him Andros.

Shut up, you'll lose and everyone will blame Cleverley, don't ruin my predictions.

Didn't know Germany are missing so many players.

Talksport beating everyone to the punch by blaming him already. "What does Tom Cleverley do? What does he offer? Why does Hodgson always pick him?"

I think there are genuine questions to be asked about why Cleverley is starting.

You do wonder if he put in similar performances for any non CL team, would he be picked?

I've noticed recently that Gough has a big downer on Welbeck too actually, which is a bit odd seeing as i don't think that Danny has ever let England down in a serious way.

Because Hodgson is making use of the entire squad, which was the purpose of these friendlies. It's all rather simple. Lampard and Wilshere played the other night. Gerrard and Cleverley play tomorrow. A younger player with legs to accommodate an older play in both instances. Cleverley is currently 5th choice behind all of Gerrard, Carrick, Wilshere and Lampard, let us not pretend he has been starting important matches in recent times.

A German second choice XI is probably still better than anything England can muster.

Cleveley and Gerrard as a two in the middle, well will be interesting to see if it happens.

Highly doubt Mour would have played gerrard and Lampard as the two though would he, it would have been those two playing of a dm which is fine. In fact a gerrard, lamps and carrick trio probably could have worked really nicely in the past. It was just the two of them together that's much more often than not seemed unbalanced.

Nothing odd about it. Gough is a wind-up merchant who knows bugger all about football.

There aren't a whole host of decent centre mids in this country anyway, so if it's one start per CM for these friendlies then it makes sense. I'm just surprised it wasn't Cleverley against Chile and Wilshere against Germany.

I think Danny is the one who's been playing at the left for England in the last few matches.
Which is why he hasn't been scoring. Looking at the games he has scored in i am fairly sure he was the focal point of the attack.

His 3 England goals this season (vs. Scotland and 2 vs. Moldova) have all come from the left in a front three.

I think the attacking player with the worst scoring record is Walcott. You pick Walcott for his ability to get in behind defences and finish, yet he has scored 5 in 36 for England. That's fecking atrocious.

On recent form for England I think Welbeck should be a clear starter.

I was looking for this thread earlier to post that and couldn't find it. I'm not surprised Liverpool fans are pissed off.

Risking injury to "test his resolve" is beyond stupid. His priority right now should be to protect the players going to the WC. Risking derailing Sturridge's season and suggesting that he'd rather he got injured now is showing no respect for the club or the player. He is an idiot, Hodgson.

It's ridiculous. There's no way he'd try and pull that on an Arsene or a Fergie. He's a right twat and I hope he gets sacked.

I actually couldn't believe what I was reading. If it was a United player I'd be so pissed off.
