Star Wars: Episode VII will be set 30 years after Return of the Jedi.

The JJ Abrams movie, which is released on December 18, 2015, is also due to start shooting this May.

Star Wars cast: Ford, Fisher, Hamill before they were famous

The news was confirmed in a statement on the official Star Wars website.

The announcement read: "It has also been confirmed that Star Wars: Episode VII is set about 30 years after the events of Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, and will star a trio of new young leads along with some very familiar faces.

"No further details on casting or plot are available at this time."

Meh, that was a given. Pretty much, a year ago everybody knew that the story would take place 30-40 years after Return of The Jedi. Also, it looks certain that Hamill and Fisher will return. Hopefully Ford too.

Shooting starts in May and they've yet to announce a single cast member. The feck are they doing? This all seems very rushed to try and meet Disney's 2015 promise.

Was the script for the whole new trilogy in works from a very long time ? Perhaps Lucas had something prepared in the 90's...

Should I believe JJ Abrams knows what he's doing and already has a clarified view on the whole project or this is gonna be another fail - Phantom Menace style ?

Fingers crossed.

So are the new movies going to be centred around Luke or Leia's children then?

Could be that too. From link provided by Hal9000 Luke's gonna have a relationship with Mara Jade perhaps and that could be just a material for one trilogy while in more distant plans there may be another one focused on more characters.

Basically though the EU as we know it is dead - all they're keeping is The Clone Wars TV show.

Apparently Disney have banned EU characters (except Revan and oddly Starkiller) from an upcoming semi official cosplay parade.
What's that?

Personally, I don;t care about EU events after 'The Thrawn trilogy'. It was ruined anyway by people competing to each other who will make Star Wars look more like DragonBall Z.

Why Starkiller? Seriously. I doubt that he would make a list on top 10 most famous EU characters. Revan is probably the most famous of them all (or at-least in top 3 with Mara Jade and Thrawn) but Starkiller (despite that I like him)?

The Clone Wars TV Show has ended a couple of weeks ago. In the fall there will start a new cartoon TV show (Rebels) whose events will happen between the two trilogies. Probaby we will see the likes of Mara Jade, Starkiller, Kyle Katarn and Ahsoka there. Hopefully!

Disney could easily pull off a seperate trilogy about that guy.

I think part of the problem was that with the assumption that the movies were done Lucas Licensing just basically let people go mad - hence the Vong, hence Darth Caedus, hence Daala becoming the Head of State etc.

I doubt we'll see Mara or Starkiller in Rebels but I do feel like we'll see a bunch of characters from the new films introduced.

Not surprised the EU will probably be thrown out, it happened with Star Trek when the Next Generation, Voyager, Deep Space Nine etc etc came out.

It restricts them script wise, not to mention i guess situation regarding royalties for using characters created by authors.

Revan and Starkiller are from the games and i'm pretty sure the games are actually considered canon.

Before Disney bought the franchise games were a lower level of canon than the books and the movies.

Now the only things that are canon are the films, and the Clone Wars TV series.
Pretty sure games were on the same level, just some parts like different endings were non-canon.

I don't think all will be lost from the EU anyway, didn't Disney hire the guy who maintains the Holocron? Think they also hired the guy who maintained the Star Wars index to basically pick apart the EU and decide what should be considered canon for the upcoming movies.

Vong was completely stupid. They tried then to make it a bit better, like Palps intentions were from the beginning to make a more powerful state that can confront them (a bit similar to Revan's intentions) but still, it changed completely the reason of Clone Wars.

The return of the Palps was even more terrible. Completely un-neccesary and he was on steroids which obvously meant that Luke Skywalker had also to use doping in order to match him. The funny part is that it happened (if I am not mistaken) between the Thrawn Trilogy (when Luke is a complete noob) and the Hand of Thrawn dualogy (when Luke is the equivalent of a Jedi Master). However when he beat the clone Palps, he was more powerful than any other Jedi in history.

Abeloth was retarded too. Despite that they tried to fix it a bit, by introducting the Ones in The Clone Wars TV show, still it looked a bit stupid. Also, Darth Caedus was ridiculously strong. Anyway, personally I haven't read the thirty or so books on Vong and Darth Caedus, so personally I am fine with them completely erasing them from the memory. In fact, it is a good thing cause it will return somehow 'the realism' which is very consistent on EU until the ten years or so after Return of The Jedi. FFS, they even created a weapon that can turn stars into supernova which would make the Death Star look like a toy.

I dunno, Rebels will take place shorty before the original trilogy so they can definitely shown a bit the likes of Starkiller, Mara Jade and Kyle Katarn. All of them have many fans, especially the last two. I would be amazed if they don't use Ahsoka, who will be the new Disney princess. She is probably one of the most popular Star Wars characters on the new generation, who were grown watching the TV show (probably not watching the movies at all). In fact, I think that she would be also in the new movies in some capacity (although it would be a 65 years old Ahsoka, basically the new Shaak Ti).

Movies was the main canon.

Then was the TV show.

And then were everything else, including books, comics and video games. The non-canon pieces of video games (Revan killing Bastilla for example, or choosing The Exile as a male) are of course non-canon. Also, if anything on books/games/comics contradicts the TV show or movies, it becomes automatically non-canon (unless it can be interpreted in different ways, like Republic being 30k years old, but Mace Windu was talking about the Republic after the Ruusan reformations - which completely changed it structure - when he said that there hasn't been an open scale war since the Republic was born a thousand of years ago).

just finishing book 8 (of 9) from the Legacy of the Force series. Some of that would be excellent in movie form. Basically Luke is married to Mara, they have a son Ben. Leia and Han have 2 sons and a daughter; Anakin, Jacen and Jaina. I'll not spoil it in case anyone wants to read the series but an excellent read for any Star wars fans

Was it the last one (there are 9 books)? The problem is that they likely be completely contradicted by the new movies which will take place shortly before them. I haven't read them, but I hope that at-least they will take some part from the EU. For example, I would go batshit crazy if Leia/Han doesn't have two twins and another son (who might be already dead if they are loyal to EU) and Luke doesn't have a son named Ben.

Still can't believe they gave this to Abrams, simply appalling stuff.
Why? He is a good director and the new Star Trek movies were more Star Warsy then the prequel trilogy.

.
In the books;
Jacen and Jaina are the Solo twins, Anakin is their other son, Ben is the son of Mara and Luke Skywalker

Star Wars is all about Skywalker's family so the story may and probably will come that far.

Christian Bale is very Jacen Solo. They will likely go for someone who is a complete unknown though.
I dunno. That was definitely Lucas's casting pattern (more or less unknowns for the main roles, actors with a lot of experience and gravitas for supporting roles) but I'm increasingly convinced that that was due to his directing style.

JJ knows his shit and knowing he's a geek probably loves Star Wars like the rest of us, which implies there is no way he's going to cock it up as I imagine he hated the new films as much as the rest of us! :p

I'm hoping he doesn't take it down the Pirates of the Caribbean route and make a silly/serious. But rather the Star Trek route of serious/witty, that's what made the originals so good. I have a sneaking suspicion we might see Cumberbatch in some shape or form in these films.

Also... Girls star Adam Driver is in final negotiations to play the main villain according to the Hollywood Reporter.

His Girls co-star Lena Dunham even tweeted her congratulations, saying she was "very proud" of him, before telling Adam to "rip a hole in da force".

The actor has also appeared in recent films such as Lincoln and Inside Llewyn Davis.

I watched the first two episodes of that "Girls" show... was less distinctively underwhelmed by it all.

Word is that's close to what he's doing. That Michael Ardnt wrote a much more thoughtful movie than they were expecting and he was let go so that JJ Abrams could add more set pieces and some more 'relatable' elements. Also the first draft had almost none of the older characters and a decision was made to get them 'roughly 30% of screen time'.

Urgh, you've squashed my hopes in one paragraph.

Well they got the guy who wrote Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark to do the final draft. But then word was he wasn't allowed to change too much. It just blatantly looked like they were unsure of their own rewrite and used him to add a bit of legitimacy.

If you read between the lines, it sounds like they were committed to the thoughtful pic and chickened out at the last second.

I like Adam Driver.

Such a shame the series will be a soulless special effects lens flare dumb nonstop action crap fest
Get famous fast so we don't have to put up with that for VIII and IX.

Right? I think everyone would like to get back to that feeling of real/regular people caught up in a much larger universe. Instead of the 'oh look R2D2's granddad just happened to be in the neighborhood' stuff.

The Star Wars team is thrilled to announce the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII.

Director J.J. Abrams says, "We are so excited to finally share the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud."

Star Wars: Episode VII is being directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and Abrams. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, and John Williams returns as the composer. The movie opens worldwide on December 18, 2015.

Most of them were rumoured. Serkis and von Sydow the surprises. I wonder if Serkis will be acting himself or doing mo-cap for something?

As expected they have either gone with total unknowns or with low profile actors. It is a very risky thing to do, as we saw with Hayden Christenses getting the job for which applied 1000 actors including Di Caprio.

The big 3 (and Chewbacca, C-3PO and R2-D2) returning are great news but expected news.
