It would be nice to have and I can add assists to the player profiles, but somebody will need to provide me with the data. It's too much to manage on top of everything else while covering a match.

So it could be done after matches are finished. Are you volunteering to be the assists data miner? :)
I can do that for you.

Fantastic start but let's not forget that LA are in the middle of their season and were seemingly just going through the motions, trying not to get injured. Or are just really, really shit. I wouldn't say it was an entirely pointless affair, seeing as it gave the team confidence and momentum but when it comes to physical and tactical preparation, I don't think we benefit much from these sort of games. Hopefully Roma will be a worthier opponent. And we smash them.

I was expecting a slow tempo, half arsed game as Van Gaal barely had time to work with the squad and also because of fitness levels but was surprised with the tempo we played.

Herrera was just brilliant, as a CM and also as #10. Next game will be a good test against very good opponents.

Missed the game due to time difference and girlfriend coming to visit last night. Downloading the match now. Good to see we won by such a scoreline and it sounds like Herrera was a very good buy. Can't wait to see the match. :)

Oh, it's worth a watch. Complete domination for the vast majority of the game.

Let's do it against Madrid now

Just watched the game.

Can't really ask for much more than that can we? Herrera was fantastic though I can't help but feel maybe that was just a normal CM performance and we've just been so accustomed to crap ones that it looked brilliant!

Fletcher was good too and I get a lovely little tingle inside seeing him with the armband.

Shaw was clearly a bit nervous but that's fine.

Few worries about us going 3-4-3 but I'll save them for later.

it only requires 2 center mids
and 1 attacking mid

center mids we have herrera, cleverly , fletcher injured carrick and .... sigh fellaini...

attacking mids we have mata/kagawa/januzaj rooney who can slot there and a host of other attacking youngsters.

assuming we sign one more CM which we would need reguardless if we play 433 442 4231 and so on we would be quite stocked and wouldnyt need to field 3 Central defenders ... where we would lack is defenders and we aleady lack numbers there anyway... i can see us buying 2 defenders and promoting keane .... we dont have champions league therefor dont need a huge squad
Well you were right haha. Can't wait for Roma on sat now. But the ability to play 2 front man AND 1 in behind worked a treat last night. I hope it's the same against tougher opposition too. But I take my hat off to you. You were spot on pal.

Couldn't be any more pleased with that result, easily the best football we have played in a long time. PROGRESS.

The difference between our last 2 managers already is like watching Liverpool under Hodgson and then under Rodgers......I'm very excited for the new season

Its only one game but.....to think some fans still wanted Moyes to have more time...can you imagine his quotes after a disappointing 2-1 defeat to the Galaxy...... 'Sure it's only a pre-season game laddie, some of the lads weren't match fit yet. Even Fergie himself would have struggled in a game like this

Just watched the full game now. Excellent performance all round, but my oh my Herrera was on another planet. Such a confidence booster for the whole club, even if it is only a friendly. As people have mentioned already this time last year we were losing to Singapore select XI's and Thai teams, that was certainly a sign of things to come. Let's hope this is the same.

How was luke shaw?
Wasn't involved much, found himself out of position one or two times. Other than that, he was good, considering it was his debut and in a little bit unfamiliar position. He wanted the ball and made some save decisions, didn't dribble at all iirc. It was ok.

Haha cheers lvg is a genius.... Loved every bit of that game and the style

You maybe on to something. Good point.

Congrats to LVG for the result.
My biggest concern right now is defence. It looks a bit loose with 3 of them struggling against Galaxy guys. I still think we should get one more experienced defender.

Poor play for Fletcher. He looked a bit like Fellaini cant handle the ball.

Others are still adapting to the formation but they looked ok for the pre-season.

Nice to see whole team getting subbed.

How was luke shaw?

Looked nervous for the majority of the first half and always looked for the safe pass instead of bombing down the wing like we see him do with S'ton. Made one defensive mistake as I recall, other than that he did ok. Its just nerves though, I'll give him time before judging him.

Another thing I thought was interesting last night was the shape of our midfield 3. A lot of the times to me it looked more like

Mata - Herrera
--- Fletcher ---

than

------ Mata ------
Herrera - Fletcher

With Mata dropping quite deep a lot of the time and linking up exceptionally with Herrera.

Doesn't make much difference in the grand scheme of things I guess, but am I alone in thinking this?

It's intentional. When attacking Herrera moves up. When defending he falls back. If you didn't notice by any chance there were various occasions where Herrera went forward and Mata fell back next to Fletcher. The understanding between the players was phenomenal and it's only the first game of the season with a few training sessions under their belt.

I know it's only one game, but god damn, Ander is such a breath of fresh air in midfield. He is going to be such an important player if he keeps it up.

Posted these in the Newbies but for those interested here are gifs of the goals:

Phuck, it took two hours to get back to Santa Monica from Pasadena last night, only to be rewarded with fours sleep before going to LAX.

You guys have surely covered it all. Ander Herrera was outrageous. Great to see Fletcher back at it.

While we did look very good, this one has to go down as a shit opponent more than anything else. But yeah, we did look very good.

In the pregame warmup you could see Rooney really looked up for the match and went around to every player with a pat on the back. He desperately wants to be captain.

What a performance. That's the Manchester United I know.

Herrera was outstanding. James looks to be one for the future and LVG even got Young and Welbeck scoring. I have a feeling we'll be seeing a lot of players coming out of their shell next season. And who knows, maybe we don't have that much deadwood afterall.

Hopefully no

hopefully not but it's very early days yet. Poor opposition last night too. I hope your right but I don't think the likes of fellani Nani cleverley etc.. will get much game time this year if they're still around. Plus Roma inter and real will find them out in a heartbeat.

Finally got a chance to watch the match this morning. Before any commentary on our players and their performances, as has been pointed out by many, the opposition last night was fairly poor. The defending on Rooney's second goal right before half is what you expect at a prepubescent match. That being said, we looked sharp and effective. The 3-5-2 formation that LVG likes to employ so much worked well, although some of the players still need to work out their tactical responsibilities. Herrera was definitely the man of the match, with excellent control, passing, tackling and overall awareness. He seems to have a knack for knowing what is the best option in most situations and looks a fresh of breath air in our midfield with the linkup play with Mata looking solid. Rooney looked as fit as I have seen him in match one preseason which is good to see. Welby worked hard and and looked solid.

I do think that our defense still needs to be sorted, especially if we employ this 3-5-2. Smalling and Jones are athletic enough to cover their positions, however I am a bit worried of Evans getting pulled out wide left where he will not be as effective against fast wingers who can dribble. On that note, Luke Shaw did fairly well, but I thought he looked a bit timid going forward, which he never did with Southampton. This may just be some nerves over his first start at such a big club with a large price tag now on his head demanding performances. Still, in this setup he needs to be confident going forward and taking on defenders. Also, he seemed a bit stranded at times which left Evans out wide left on his own a few times in the first half which is not ideal. Had this been against a better attacking side we may well suffer that situation. At 18 and in that left wing back position, Shaw will have to show a massive engine to get forward and help cover back at the left, and most importantly learn when to go forward and when to hang back. I'm sure LVG will teach them all well.

Overall very impressed. In light of our last season performances it is hard not to crack at least a little smile again.

Good performance. We attacked with a good purpose, kept the ball well and Herrera looked capable of picking a pass, which would be a really positive thing for us this season. But let's not get away from the fact that Galaxy were shite. The amount of time Herrera, for example, was getting to pick his passes won't be repeated in the PL. But pretty much every player looked like they knew what they were doing, which is already a massive improvement on last season. Overall a good start, albeit not much of a test.
