Thought Smalling did well when he came on, without him I reckon Roma would of come away with the win.

From the open training all the passing drills I saw were two touch. At the moment players are taking four or five touches before releasing the ball.
There was some good one touch passing moves in the first half. I don't think we can really judge much from the second half as most of the players probably won't even play a game for us.

2nd pre-season game, 2nd game using this new system + a shallow squad, I'm pretty happy with how things are. We still need a CB, CM, maybe two, and I think we're set.

Thank God we are done here.

Seriously, the way the people at the back crumbled mentally was unacceptable. I hope LVG also sees now that we need better quality in midfield as well.

I don't think there's much left for van Gaal to learn about this squad. Stevie Wonder can see that we need to sign a top class DM and a commanding CB.

Good game all in all. I like our style and our look. Poor 2nd half but you could expect that with 10 subs. We need additions though..

Lesson learned? A manly central midfielder is required.

For me, that's a more urgent issue than a central defender, but we need both if want to lift the pre, trophy.

Safe to say Amos wont play again. Absolute shocker for the Pjanic goal. I'm impressed with Blackett and James. Shaw doesn't look good at wing back so far, just doesn't offer much going forward. A few more games to judge the players before the season begins. Wonder how LVG sees them. We really need another midfielder.

This game just shows that at the end of the day it is about fitness. I don't think LVG would play this second half team in a competitive game. Just trying to give everyone game time.
Indeed. Some on here would have us believe we're half way through the season

Not that surprising a second half when Roma brought on some good players and we took ours off plus had no midfielder on the pitch. Smalling was good though

Agreed. Another midfielder and a defender needed.

Absolutely no midfield cover since Hernandez came on, keeps just coming straight back.
Will Keane looks like he will struggle at this level at the moment, maybe a loan move would help again.
Not really sure Amos can be blamed for that goal, quite common for goalies to be off their lone that much when the ball is deep in oppos half.
Would like to see Herrera, Kagawa and Mata in the middle, hopefully their passing and movement would compliment the system well.
Good to see Smalling get arm band and put in a strong showing too; could be a very big year for him IMO.

Good thing its over we were looking ropey at the end. You can make the argument that the lack of defensive minded midfielders left us wide open for Roma but, frankly, they did nothing until Amos allowed himself to get Beckham'd. After that we started to panic in possession at the back, Amos redeemed himself to push that shot onto the post but by then the panic had already set in: Players jumping for the ball and missing it, swinging the leg at the ball or dallying in possession when the runner was free. Shows the Van Gaal philosophy is still very new and will need time to bed in. The calmness on the ball still isn't there for many.

Pretty poor in the second half really.

At least this gives LvG another indication that we need another few quality players.

It's just not acceptable to have only U21 defenders after Jones, Smalling and Evans. We need a leader in that back line and a more defensive midfielder.
