A proper fan supports his team through anything. That's it. You can't just stop following a team because you don't like the football.
That's a weird affirmation, there are reasons behind people fandom, if those reasons disappear then it's perfectly natural that a fan stops being a fan.

The fact is this club needs to be seen in the CL to attract the caliber of players we need.
I would happily take 4th even if it meant LVG will still be here next season. It's just a year it's not going to kill me.
If we miss out on top 4, that would be the second time in 3 years. You kid yourself if you think that's not more damaging then LVG.
I am also convinced if we bring in more quality players(something CL football would help), we will definitely have a better season than this whether LVG stays or not.

I suspect many do though. It's almost as if supporting the corporate shite, failed managers and the likes of Woody somehow makes you a fan. If I had my way I'd expand the ground and let in the local kids for next to nothing. But then again it's all about the money and that's all that counts, right?
Some good points Spoony. There is another debate about money and how there are already signs its killing the EPL game but probably not appropriate here.

Start preparing for Giggs to take over (might not be a bad idea)

If one chooses not to continue watching their team having the life strangled out of them, then surely it doesn't matter if they're in the Champions League, Vauxhall conference or San Marino 3rd division.
I don't know what I'll do personally if he stays another year but if theres the remote chance it drives me away from watching football for a while, I won't give a rats arse what competition we're boring people in.

that's the thing though, there's very little connection between this current crop and the supporters, especially when we are captained by a guy who is only out for himself.
I think its more complex. Rooney is about shirt sales and the past. Rashford and co are from the same background of many home grown fans. Depay and Martial are settling in, while Mata and Ander have shown their passion. Tony V runs his heart out for the club and DDG is sensitive to fans passions. I think the future captain and manager will determine where the club goes in the future. They all engage with the fans but its done through the blinkers of the PR director - the lads are as dreary off the pitch as they have become on it.

What LVG has done has ripped the heart out of the squad and yesterday at Norwich was evidence of the scale of damage. While I am certain the lads played their hearts out they were driven by a manager who motivates like a very poor school teacher. Its absurd watching coaches read a thesis to players before they come on as subs. Thats not motivation and if the lad doesnt know verbal instructions by that time why is he on the bench?

What LVG has done is so ugly but modern fans don't have any outlet to really show their feelings. When fans protest TV pundits take the piss because they know big money is at stake and their jobs. Its a viscious circle and LVG is a master at exploiting it.

I expect Van Gaal here so this is what I plan to do:

- Not attend OT at all
- Won't buy any official merchandise. Will buy from AliExpress
- Not devote hours per week to watch the games no matter what (I'll watch when I have no plans).
- Will write an official letter to the club (probably a waste of time)

MUTV went in January, and I told them exactly why when I cancelled.

Trolling?

You basically just said that you're going to stop supporting united next year. You're not a proper fan. Everything that opposition clubs say about our fanbase, that we are spoiled and glory hunters would be epitomised in you supporting another club.
There are many ways to support the club. Including boycott of games.

If he gets top 4 and wins the FA Cup, he will stay. Anything else I don't think so.

He said he was going to follow another club.

That's not really a way of supporting the club.
I've probably missed that part. However, it's no big deal. Many fans follow local clubs from a lower league.

To me it boils down to the worst bolded, mine has been and the only way to start repairing the damage is to the this cancerous manager out.

You didn't miss anything, Twigg is talking shit as usual, I said I'd not watch the PL and just watch some of the other leagues for football purely as the sport next season.

My boycott will be to walk out immediately after the final whistle against Bournemouth. No cheering the players and staff for their lap of dishonour.

City fans are doing likewise.

Only on the Internet will you see fans actually trying to seriously legitimise stopping following a team

Three years after the most successful two decades any British club has had and we might be back in champions league and win a trophy and there's folk acting hard done by.

I think you should all stop following United too then, bye bye

Klopp has got less points than LVG this season since he's come in.
Yep I knew that but they've reached two finals and are playing very good football generally

With a transfer window you would expect him to solve some of their issues

Boycott our games next year. I will probably take on a new hobby to make up for the gaping hole of not watching United and probably watch Liverpool games as I enjoy the way Klopp has them playing and will be interesting to see a Pep led City/Conte led Chelsea. I watch their games on and off anyway but definitely will do so more regularly next year just out of interest to see how their seasons pan out. They're the only PL teams which could interest me as a neutral. Arsenal are too cowardly for me to enjoy their games and I don't envisage seeing any progress.

I will probably want Spurs to win the league.

When people say they are boycotting, I guess they mean actually not going to the ground? Boycotting matches on TV is pointless, that's like stopping to follow United all of a sudden. How would anyone do that?

If you really think that the current discontent is purely down to winning trophies/being in CL or not then you either haven't watched us all season or are incredibly deluded.

I'll continue to not waste my money going to OT. We really are one of the worst sides in top flight football to watch. I spend more time reading the match day thread than watching the games. I might as well just stick the radio on.

I think herein lies the main problem for me. Its not about money at all but about my time. I follow United because of how it makes me feel. I don't have much spare time after family and work responsibilities so my time with Manchester United has to deliver.

The past few seasons have gotten increasingly worse in terms of providing entertainment or feel good factor. This season, for the first time ever, I drift in and out of games, even made tea or had bathroom trips during playing time: it's just sooooooooo dull.

Busby and Ferguson both drilled into
players thier responsibility to entertain fans. I doubt this has been mentioned I
in the dressing or board room since SAF retired.

I don't expect to endless or wins, just some drama that entertains me and so is worthy of my time. We may not have won much in the 1980s but we were generally entertaining to watch.

Watching United play right now actually makes me feel worse than I was before the game started. Its at that point I ask myself the question 'what's the bloody point'?!

According to whose definition? I'd like to see where this is empirically stated.

The same as this season: moan at the state of the club, moan at how bad the team plays, moan at lvg for being a moron and most of all I will keep watching for some stupid reason.

He has managed to turn us from a powerhouse in world football to a team making up the numbers. That is some achievement.
The team was hardly a 'powerhouse in world football' when he arrived.
It finished sixth.

If you mean the club as a whole (and just the team)... it still is a powerhouse in world football.

Yes we were 6th, but I think most people, including fans from other teams thought it was just a blip. The summer signing will show if players still think we are big players or not.

I know I will watch every pre season game live at stupid o'clock then watch every game of next season too despite the fact I hate van Gaal with a passion (as a manager/tactician). He may be a nice person outside of football but the man is my football kryptonite, he is slowly killing my love for the game and frustrates, angers and bores me so much that I'm sure I've got an ulcer and have slipped into several comas over the last year or so.
However my love for United will never die so I guess after going on a swearing rant so expletive that it will probably get my head kicked in or me arrested, I will no doubt simmer down, cry a little and then prepare myself for another season of visual gonorrhoea courtesy of a deluded, stubborn and quite frankly loony old Dutch bastard.
