I would swap Martial for Verratti, let alone Messi.

PS: The 10-15 years projections are complete nonsense.
Now see that I don't agree with. Veratti is good but not that good that I'd swap Martial with him.

No I wouldn't personally. Martial will never be as good as Messi but Messi is starting to tail off. You might get 2-3 more years out of him at the top level but Martial has10-15 more good years ahead.

That's why I said "I" and not "we should". But concerning the OP, I wouldn't swap Rashford for Messi because he grew up with the club, I love Martial but he is already in the system people need to remember that he asked to leave a club late in the window knowing that it would be extremely hard for them to replace him, he wasn't sentimental at the time.

I'd be looking at it the other way around.

We would get 2/3 years out of Messi at top level and we might get 10/15 more good years out of Martial. As impressive and all as Martial has been, It's still early days for him yet.

It's impossible to plan ahead for anymore than 3/4 years in football with the way it's gone nowadays and for that reason I'd swap Martial for Messi today.

Personally no, simply because I've never naturally gravitated toward players who have made their name somewhere else and then turn up here as opposed to somebody given a chance from an early age with no rep who then goes on to grow into a world-class player (as Martial has the potential to).

Don't get me wrong he'll most likely never be Messi baring some phenomenal, never seen before, unheard of level of development in his game; and yes we would probably win every trophy under the sun with Messi in our team, but I've become used to us doing things the right way and not buying ready made success and I like it that way.

PS: I don't mind experienced pros showing up in the twilight of their career but with something still to offer on the pitch who go on to offer experience off it as well.

That worries me in the future if we aren't competing at the highest level. We really need mourinho to elevate back to the top. One thing going for him is that he is ambitious and new that Ligue 1 is a shit league and if he wanted to progress in life he had to leave that dump.

Funnily enough I would swap rashford for messi but not martial. I love rashford and all but he is no martial and is still an english player. I've known not to place any faith in english players over the years.

Nah

On this thread, I would. Messi is a player that rarely comes around in football but there can be many more Martial. Dembele, Mor, Ali, and many more players who has tons of potential, but can not reach the height of Messi
A YouTube video will always look amazing for a player like Ronaldo. At 20 Ronaldo was definitely inferior to Martial. He was skillful as feck, hence the great highlight reel but he was inconsistent with poor end product.

Rooney at the time was considered by far a greater talent. Ronaldo at that point was just an exciting youngster with an expected career trajectory that was pretty decent but not at all world class.

It's easy to say it now with those vids but if he was so good, he would have been unanimously accepted as a dead cert future worldie I.e. messi, Rooney but a lot here were split on him.

Nope, no way. Sorry.

Rationally speaking, that sentiment makes no sense because Messi is the best I've ever seen alongwith glimpses of 1996-1998 Ronaldo; and he's probably going to end up as the greatest human to ever kick a football. But in a romantic sense, Messi will always be a 'Barcelona player', and that is not going to change. A bit like say Internazionale signing Giggs at the age of 29 from United. Ryan would've never been one of them because his story as a player is woven into the fabric of United. And similarly, whatever Messi achieves with United will pale in comparison with his Barcelona career - not just in terms of achievements, but the emotions involved with watching a 16 year old breaking their youth records, emerging in the first team, eclipsing Ronaldinho, becoming the greatest of the post-modern era, and then - transcending his era. 50 years from now, Barcelona will be at the forefront when people look back at his career, and (if he joins United) - the new club will only be a footnote - a minor side story.

In a similar vein, Martial is just starting his journey with United. He's already entered United folklore with a few magical moments in his debut season at a young age. And I'd like to see where that goes over the next - however many years he stays at United. There is a chance that he might leave for greener pastures in the future for whatever reasons, but there's also a chance that he becomes 'one of us' - like Messi is for Barcelona, and sticks around for the long haul - adding layers to his United story with each great performance. He might not be an academy player, and a lot of credit for his development goes to Lyon and Les Ulis and Monaco, but he did burst onto popular consciousness at United, and that means something on a deeper level. Martial might not end up being even a quarter of the the player and talent peak Messi was, but I'd still take him for emotional reasons, and the fact that he's young enough to be considered a primarily United great in the future if he sticks around, as opposed to a set-in-stone Barcelona great - who also played in Manchester.

Nope, I wouldn't swap him, I just love the play style of Martial and I always found Messi boring anyway, prime Ronaldinho will always be better then Messi for me.

Yes, obviously.

I wouldn't feel happy about it. It'd be like swapping your girlfriend for Natalie Portman. Sure Natalie Portman is 35 now but she's still Natalie Portman. You don't pass that opportunity up.

Messi boring  What are you sniffing.

Whilst I agree prime 'dinho was more exciting to watch, to call Messi boring is insane. He's currently the most exciting player on the planet.

Would I swap Martial for Messi? Absolutely.

I wouldn't, no.

Watching Messi play for United would be amazing but the potential to watch Martial grow into one of the best is more appealing.

The rainbow's end
There are strong arguments from both sides with the primary objective being the return of our club at the highest level of European football.

Messi is the short cut to the top. His skills on the ball and his end product are simply unbelievable, his mere presence at a club draws other top footballers like a magnet and he is an one man army in the sense that he can be the catalyst which guarantees that his team will continue to challenge for all major trophies. The chances are that Martial, although he can become a great footballer, he'll not reach Messi's "define a whole generation" level. And frankly, there's nothing wrong with that.

What Martial represents is the opportunity to have on the pitch, in a few years time, a football product that is this club's pride and joy. A young and very promising player, a raw diamond with tonnes of ability who manages to fulfill his potential at OT. This kind of a football story has become synonymous with United, it's one of the things that have shaped its identity throughout the years and it stimulates United fans more than anything else.

After all, United may have had lots of world class players wearing the red shirt but none of them became bigger than the club. The highest authority was always the manager, it was Busby's side with Charlton and not the other way around. It was also Ferguson's United for 26 years. Messi defines Barcelona atm, the first team's planning revolves around him. The last three managerial appointments, after Pep, had his approval before the deals were finalized.

This isn't how United have learnt to operate as a football organization. On the other hand, there are no guarantees that Martial won't do a Ronaldo and ask to leave when he becomes a top class player. From this point of view it's always "safer" to take five good years from a ready made solution who, in this case, may also be the best footballer to ever kick a ball.

Normally i'd say no but then again this is Messi we're talking about. He, alongside Ronaldo (the Brazilian) and Zidane are the only players from the last 20 years for whom i would possibly make an exception.

Messi is a once in a lifetime talent, only the likes of Di Stefano, Maradona and Péle compare. Martial is "only" a great talent with world class potential and there will certainly be a couple more Martials in the next 10 years which United could buy again. So the "5 vs. 15 years" argument isn't really a strong one for me.

I'd be fine either way.
Messi at the very least one of the best players in the world right now, and he'd alone be a massive pull when trying to get other players. We wouldn't struggle to challenge for the league if we got him either. That said, Martial would (if he stays loyal to the paycheck he gets at United) give us more years and he can possibly reach a point where he is the best player in the world.

Can't say no, won't say yes, is that a decent answer?

Crazy question, anyone saying no is off their rocker
Yeah I can't help but agree.

If you'd have asked this question about Januzaj in his first season you'd have got people saying no aswell. I don't doubt Martial's talent for a second but we're talking about the best player on the planet.

Messi is a far better player, and probably better than Martial will ever be. So in that sense it would be daft not too.

I wouldn't swap Martial for him though. I just don't like Messi for some reason, I appreciate he's either the best, or second best in the world and some of the things he does with a ball are outrageous, but I like Martial a lot more. I also think if we had a better side in a few years Martial could be pulling off huge numbers himself as well.

Messi. The problem with picking Martial (aside from the obvious gap in quality) is that there's no guarantee he would stay for a long period, so you're not necessarily going to benefit from the one plus he has over Messi. Whereas Messi's plus points are very immediate and very certain.

Plus it's much easier to opt for Messi and find another Martial than it is to opt for Martial and find another Messi.
If Martial ever reaches the heights of ronaldo or even Bale, you can bet your bottom dollar Madrid will be reletlessly obssesed with him, throwing money to try and get him, Marca pounding the speculation, so there is the 50/50 chance he would be Madrid bound, as they will be looking for the next ronaldo

I probably wouldn't. Watching world class talents in your team develop with the right manager is fantastic. That's why the 06/07 season was my favourite United season. Rooney and Ronaldo both made huge steps back then and I don't think we've had a talent like Martial since. However we have no guarantee that Martial stays with us for a long time, so it's tricky to say for me.

When I first read the title of the thread I was sure that this thread was just for a laugh. After reading the posts I can see some are quite serious.

I know that it is pretty normal to overrate our own players. That's ok. One loves one's own. But doubting even for a second the possibility of acquiring the greatest player of his generation, if not all time, at the peak of his powers in exchange of a young, promising player is foolish fanboyism.

I'd give up half of our starters for Messi and we'd still come out winning in the deal.
Add the likes of Rooney to the deal and it keeps getting worse for Barca.

This is sort of like asking would i swap my wife for Scarlet Johansson, i love her and all, it would be a wrench and i would agonize over that decision for literally seconds before saying ''Sorry love it's been great but i'm off, see you later''

She's a lot better looking than me so she'd find someone else handily enough and my sons i'm sure would love Black Widow to be their new Mum. Everyone's happy.

Seriously though Martial could fizzle out and just be a good player or go on to become an amazing player for us or decide he dreams of Real in two years and fecks off nothing is certain. Messi is the best player ever and will continue to be the worlds best player for the next few years. In that time he would deliver league titles and even a champions league or two.

So many people on here say Ibrahimovic is a no brainer at 34, if that's true what does that make Messi at 28?

I'd swap DDG, Shaw, Martial and Rashford combined for Messi. Possibly the best player there has ever been.

Few people saying that martial could give us a good 10/15 years, which would take him up to 35. Same people saying messi could only give another 2/3 at the top level . At least be consistent , messi realistically has another 5-7 years where he can be world class . He will be better than Pirlo ever was age 35+.

Messi at 40 will be better than martial will be at 31/32

I think that video, the tricks, if you ignore those and just think about him beating players... Martial doesnt do the trickery but he beats players with ease. He also has an end product which this video of Ronaldo doesnt show. He used to do a trick and then lose the ball. Still amazing all the same, exceptonal talent, to take on that number 7 like that and to come to United and do all that in your first season, crazy skills.

Ronaldo also benefited from a Ferguson philosohpy that allowed wingers to pick the ball up and run with it. Martial has had to deal with LvGs negative posession shite. I think Martial in that sort of United team would shade Ronaldo.
