It is his position. He's been a fullback for more than three seasons now. Anyway, excellent once again.
He has been playing as fullback but that only doesn't make him proper fullback, and for me he is still a makeshift fullback. But as u said he did very well today.

Stop with this, Like @Bugshot said, he's been playing it for 3 years now (and had a few games there in the SAF years too). I keep coming to this example, but do you still call Bastian a winger?

He was always a hugely defensively aware winger, covering our RB's over the years.... so out of every other winger we've had at this club, the one you could see playing RB and doing well was Valencia.
He's our best RB and been that way for a few years now, hopefully he can stay fit, we'll miss his qualities otherwise.

I'm a detractor I guess, I used to love him but feel he fell off a bit. Absolutely great in pre season and great again today. Hope he keeps it up.

I've been a critic, harshly so at times, but he's winning me over.

He was excellent today.

Valencia, Bailly, Smalling, Pogba, Zlatan...

That's half our starting eleven, and one hell of a physical presence.

He actually hasnt though, he only started playing RB regularly 18 months ago in the second half of 14/15. Before that over his United career he only played there 12-16 times. It has been proven on here several times now

Yes hes playing fulltime as a fullback now and playing well but its a more recent move than most seem to realize.

I meant 2 years. 2 years playing in 1 position, is enough time to say he plays in that position

I wasnt arguing that mate only the length of time hes played there. He's a right back now i agree cant see him playing as a winger again.

Of course if i was a pedant i would say it still isnt 2 years but i wont :p

I see that he gave himself a vote for MOTM
Saw that  Retweeting Uniteds Motm poll. Had to vote for him though. Was a tank all day and a tank all pre season. Him and Bailly next to each other is

If anyone needed to get the LVG rubbed out of him - it's him. Well started with Fergie when he became Turn Back Tony but, with Mou wanting more directness, hopefully see what made him one of the most feared wide players. Obviously as RB he'll have to still be a bit more conservative but, think we will likely be a lot less frustrated with him this season.

Looking over my shoulder.
Anyone still thinking he has lost pace? King is blistering, but he didn't get an inch on Valencia, but Valencia had him beaten a couple of times. It's come to the point that the really fast wingers have realized they can't beat him for pace, so they don't even try. I also think his defensive contribution is really solid. At the moment, he's our best fullback - Shaw obviously having more talent, but Valencia is outperforming him.

Definitely looked slower. Mind you, he was possibly the fastest player in the league a few years ago, and is still fast as feck, just not quite as explosive. He's just continued to bulk up more and more to make up for that though.

He looks faster and more agile now than last year. That bolt he had in his foot probably caused some irritation. I think Bellerin is the fastest in the league, but Valencia is up there.

Not sure if he is faster then last year, but the I was thinking compared to him in 2012 or even 2013. Like take this for example...

That sprint really was something! I think it was against Blackburn that the manager said they double marked him, but in the end it was pointless. He may have lost a little bit of acceleration compared to his very fastest, but as you said, he was lightning. He still has more speed to go past pretty much any other fullback though. His speed combined with his strength makes him a handful.

Quality servant to the club. Adaptable, strong, fast as hell, never give up and works for the team. Exactly what you want from your fullback.

He doesn't give a feck we scored. :D Calmly walks back to do it again.
--------------
Darmian didn't make the bench today did he? I'd be worried for his game time if I was him, I could easily see us bin him back to Italy with Fosu-Mensah as the second choice RB. At Darmian's age he really should be playing consistent football which he certainly won't get with Valencia's start so far.

I've wanted him out of the starting lineup for a while but he's been a revelation recently. He can even cross the ball now. If he can just sort his occasional positional errors out he's the perfect RB, much like Luke Shaw on the other side.

I was a critic of his when he was first moved to right back in LVGs first season. Seems to have stopped having lapses in concentration and also his positioning is better, and having Jose as manager will only help with this. Have to say he is one of our most consistent performers now

Two full years really - both under Van Gaal..for Moyes he was still more a winger than a fullback. Under Fergie he was only there the odd time as a stop gap.

He's won me over as a fullback. It also helps him out having Zlatan there so he can basically just loft a cross and it will end up looking dangerous.

As the glass-half-empty kind of guy I am, I have to find something negative, so he has to stop dallying so much on throw-ins, takes him forever to get the ball into play.

Remember when we played Dortmund and he got absolutely destroyed? Lets wait until he comes up against good opposition before we start saying how good he is again.

I'm probably Valencia's Anne Wilkes but I do agree with you on this point. Don't really want him getting a silly yellow card as that can come back and bite us on the butt later in the game
