His problem is he is following a false prophet. Tony Pulis would be far more useful for him than Pep. Pep hasn't got a clue how to defend, and would probably play Zidane at centre-half. Anyone who lines up with Sagna Stones and Kolarov in a back 3 in a PL away game is a disrespect to the sport, and he got what he deserves.

Managing a team that actually has to defend is new to him. He has had the luxury of just playing midfielders and full-backs in defence his whole career and being hailed some sort of genius for it.
To be fair his previous teams have had excellent defensive records, so maybe he knows a little bit

Stones was having problems with his defensive lapses before Pep showed up

His previous team had the capability to seldom allow the opponent leave their own half, with this team, but especially in this league, that won't happen.

Nothing surprising really. After that Stones horror show in recent games and Kolarov doing fine last game against Watford why should Pep change it?

Was just comparing him stats-wise to Bailly, just out of interest.

According to Squawka, he has only won 8 tackles in 13 games this season. Surely that can't be accurate?

Probably is accurate...

Pep Guardiola said:
"I am not a coach for the tackles. I don't train the tackles.

"What I want is to try to play good and score goals and arrive more, so what's tackles?"

Good defences have so much more to do with the manager than the players. And Guardiola has never been a good manager of defences. Compare to Mourinho, not using any of the three centre-backs who would have been called our best at the start of the season - Smalling, Bailly and Blind - and still establishing a very respectable looking unit. Or Conte, putting two average players - Cahill and Azpilicueta - and Calamity Luiz into an unfamiliar formation and turning it into the league's best back line.

Azpilicueta -the best overall defender in the league- is average?

Azpilicueta is anything but average.

This discussion demonstrates how visually we can be fooled.
Stones looks really comfortable and classy on the ball (for a centre half), you can't but help but think of how he stands apart from the rest - hence the tendency to over-elevate him.
On the other hand David Luiz because of his appearance, stands out a mile when he's in trouble and flailing. There's something comical about him desperately lunging in, with his hairdo trailing at full mast behind him. Therefore he attracts more ridicule than other players of similar ability.

Actually Luiz is a more and better ball player defender than Stones.

Chelsea supporter rates Chelsea players highly?!
Think both Neville and Carragher had him in their Team of the Season thus far. Been the best defender on the best team. He's almost unbeatable in 1 v 1 situations.
