Doesn't need to run much. Pirlo and Alonso don't run all game.
So maybe Bayern will finally step in and get their legend back? Mou did offered him to them back then

I much doubt it.

That was actually very good game, much better than even his biggest fans could expect him to play. And he got a nice goal and an assist too. Hopefully he can play at decent level in premierleague too since we could definitely use him, and judging by today's performance, he deserves a chance.

He took a bit to get going (as someone who hasnt started a game in about a year tends to do) and once he go into it, he looked excellent. This guy needs to get some games after that. He looked so useful.

I actually thought he did really well today after the first half an hour or so. If he can play like he did for the latter part of the game, surely he can help with the Carrick rotation?

Not been happy with him for a long time, but will admit, top class second half.

Felt he grew into the game, deserved his goal. Stamina doesn't seem to be an issue, he got stronger with minutes. The biggest question is can he do it against better opposition?

A few rusty moments but otherwise showed plenty of class. His weight of pass at least as good as Mata and Mkhitaryan. If he's going to stay around then we might as well use him from time to time.

Bossed the midfield against championship relegation contenders.

Played well today but lets be real he's past it and we desperately needed a replacement for him this January.

This sentimental malarkey over him is ridiculous, he's a Bayern legend. We don't owe him anything

Very good today. If he could do that against PL opposition then it'd be a huge boost to the squad but I don't think we'll see him played against said opposition bar a major injury crisis, and probably rightly so.

First of all, Bastian will always be technically gifted. You'll never lose that. Few years ago I watched Van Basten playing and it took him 2 minutes to score a spectacular goal which would have made current Ronaldo proud. There are things you never lose in football.

However there are things you do. Bastian barely ever ran on the pitch which is kind of a problem for a DM/Box to box midfielder. His passing improved during the game but it was against a very poor side (pre ultimate in Division 1) who was getting hammered by Manchester United. He won't be given that space against a top side and sure as hell he'll have to run against them
He's not playing those sides is he? Why the feck are you having a go at him for a hypothetical situation you've made up? Nobody is saying he should be a regular starter, in that physical condition. People are just happy that he had a good game and we won. What's the fecking problem?

Happy for him. I kind of see why Mourinho kinda threw him away at the start of the season, but there isn't a doubt in my mind that he is more use as a sub and the occasional start in midfield compared to any of our other squad player midfielders that we've used this season (schneiderlin, fellaini). He has the experience, intelligence and ability to really help with seeing out games that we could've used, and he is half decent in the air himself so it's not like we're sacrificing strength in there. Like the game against Everton in particular where Fellaini came on. Schweiny would've been a much better choice.

Everyone wants to know this, but seriously, it's not like "just anyone" can boss the midfield against Wigan. I'm not sure any other combination of midfield from our team could have done that, even if we used Pogba.

The fact that he can play like this, even against a Wigan, means there's a place for him, because we don't play Chelsea 37 times a year.

He runs just as much as Carrick does, I think he has showed a lot of effort today.
That might be true but I think Schweini is more 'make it or break it' running and with more intensity. That's to say, the ground he covers are straight up to win a tackle/put pressure as opposed to Carrick's shepherding.

I always prefer the pro active (and riskier) play than Carrick's 'safety first' mentality. It's mainly because we can afford to as we dominate possession and have the players to cover tactically and physically.

So we should pay some 200k a week to a player whom we can only use against bottom half Championship teams? Smart

So, happy to see him grab an assist and score a nice goal! Finally United scored from corner!
Also played really well for the counter attack goal.

It is against Wigan though, he should put more effort in the midfield to find space and initiate attack against better sides.

he's way past it no matter how decent he looked in the second half, wigan or just shite and couldnt press anymore in the second half, my grandma with crutches would have bossed it, maybe would show even more stamina...

I am sure we get rid of him in the summer, it's one of the easiest decisons by Jose, I have no sentiment towards him, his shape is terrible and he doesnt deserve to play for us anymore, huge decline similar to rooney/RVP, the only difference is that rooney has been better than club and RVP is in Turkey already..

Happy BFS did well. Looks like he needs a run of games to be sharp. Might be useful for us with the extra games coming up.

Would love him to be the direct replacement for Carrick instead of Fellaini

YESHHHHH, We'll GOOO for it.
Kind of pissed all over the negative Nancy's in this thread at the start of the game. Tough luck lads, get yourselves over to the Rooney thread for the real fraud.
I like that, will use it :D

Who's that Einstein who justifies the trolling by pointing out Lingard getting dog's abuse here? Both of them are wrong, don't do it :nono:
Grew into the game and hoping he'll get more games in FA and Europa at least for this season.

Carrick has much better positioning though which had bailed him out time and time again. Also he's been at OT for years now. Players look up at him and he knows the structure and the young players inside out. Considering that football is ultimately a physical game and there's a limit to how many passengers we can afford on the pitch its only fair that we opt for Carrick instead of Basti

You can only beat the team that's in front of you. Can't believe people are slating him just because we were playing Wigan.
Think he did very well today and has earned a chance to fight for a place against better opposition. Still plenty of games left especially if he's now included in our Europa squad.

My MOTM today. Thought he was brilliant. Might only be Wigan, but surely he can do a job and rotate with Carrick more.

All this based on a game where he was probably our best player. Great stuff.

You'd think so, with Herrera and Pog to do the running. Basti has still got something to offer.

Strange game from Bastian. He's certainly good enough technically to carry the ball, and physical enough to do it against most opposition even at the twilight of his career, and that's when he's at his best for us. It's when he's just stood in the centre, playing static sideways and backpasses that slows our play down to a standstill and made it easy for Wigan to press us.

In the first half he did too much of the latter, in the second he did much better with the former and as a result, we were a more fluid side.

You know what they say about class though, and despite a largely static first half, he still popped up with an inch perfect cross for Fellaini. And the goal was just all experience that underlined a solid performance.

Shaken, and very stirred......
it was Wigan..but I'm so pleased for him. I so wanted him to score and he did....but regular...no...come on....not against the big sides. However, he knows it's time over...or near the end, so I'm so happy for him. He deserves to score in a big team to end it all.

If that's what's really bugging you then you should be happy that he had a good match to drive up his transfer market value. Gotta give credit where credit is due, and BFS played a good game plain and simple.

Who are you paraphrasing there? I got the impression that we were talking about his performance today, not renewing his contract.

Don't think he has a future but I just can't read the hypocrisy. He did well today after playing sweet feck all this season. He was there to keep things ticking over and did so and more.
Great post.

You can not like a player and you can think he has no future here whilst still praising an impressive performance in a first game in 7 months.
