Drive is a fecking masterpiece.
Visually and musically yeah.

But that's literally it, hence it's an overlong music video.

I bloody love the soundtrack and it's very much a fecking cool 'scene' that it takes part in but there's no substance to it whatsoever.

Pretty much most of the Oscar wins from recent times have been undeserved. So glad La La Land never got the nod. That would have been a travesty. I mean come on...The King's Speech, The Artist, Birdman, The Hurt Locker, Unforgiven. Dear Lord!!

Oi! There's nothing wrong with Birdman.

Didn't say there was?? Just that it was not an Oscar-worthy film. This is the over-rated movies thread. And as far as being the best movie of 2014....well Birdman certainly wasn't it. So yes, it certainly IS over-rated!

Oh yeah? Well I think you're overrated!

But to be serious, there were a couple of movies in 2014 for which you could make an argument, still I don't think there's much between them. And compared to the other movies you mentioned I think birdman's in a different category.

Also, is slumdog millionaire rated? If so, it definitely belongs in here.

Sicario is overrated too. The action scenes were good but the rest of the movie was so dull. How hard is it to write a decent script with good dialogues?

The Arrival - ok film, but if you haven't seen Arrival with Charlie Sheen and Ron Silver, which is 100 times better, check it out!

Pirates of the Caribbean II-V - Why do they keep churning out this crap?

Finding Nemo / Dory - Don't understand why these are so successful Pixar movies. Yeah they're ok but nothing special. Nothing will ever top Toy Story 1 and 2, Monsters Inc. and The Incredibles.

Watched The Usual Suspects for the first time yesterday. Is there anybody that didn't see the ending coming? Was really disappointed that they went for the most obvious end and the rest of the movie was just a bit meh.

To be fair watching it like 20 years after it was released would dull the impact of the ending given how many films have done the same thing since.

Not that I have a clue how it was viewed at the time, given I was 4.

Its an ending that has been spoofed in many films and tv shows so it might be something you were already unconsciously aware of. I remember it being pretty mind blowing at the time, along the lines of 6th Sense

It's certainly possible, however I found it really unnecessary to put the emphasis on Soze switching the gun to his left hand at the start - I think it was a bad decision as it really made you focus on that.

It's one of those that got massively hyped, to the point where no film can live up to what people were saying it was.

However the 'not my tempo' scene is for me as visceral as cinema gets, and I immensely enjoyed the experience of that scene and the film as a whole.

Hmm I'm not a jazz fan at all. In fact I actually dislike the genre so I guess that realisim (or potential lack of) didn't bother me at all. It shouldn't take away from a fictional story imo.

It's one of my all time favourite movies. I'm a big fan of Miles Teller so that might be clouding my judgement a bit but I enjoyed every second of the movie and continue to on every re-watch.

See, I don't think I actually went into the move with high expectations regardless of the rave reviews.

I mean, I still haven't got round to watching LLL, and don't think I ever will.

You should, it's really good, and that's coming from someone who hates musicals.

And Whiplash is one of the most entertaining films of this century in my opinion. The ending is so good.

You did well. I'm trying (and I can definitely improve in this regard) to stop getting hyped about new films. I haven't watched a film trailer for a couple of years, which I've found helpful, although I like reading/listening to film reviews.

What was the most recent film you were hyped for that totally disappointed you?

I loved Whiplash and yes I enjoyed La La Land too. I wouldn't have seen it if not for my missus, but it was something we enjoyed together so I've nothing but positives for it.

Strange thread. Reminds me of a Liverpool supporting mate who had an odd strong dislike of Rio Ferdinand. "I just don't like him", oh ok mate.

I'm currently halfway through reading the entire film thread. I've been tallying up the ratings and I hope to come up with a Caf top 100 of sorts. It will take another couple of weeks at least - and I'll probably only update it once a month. However, I'm hoping it helps at least 1 person see a film they wouldn't have necessarily opted for, and be pleasantly surprised - hopefully the polar opposite of this thread...
