Do you mean that he individually did just enough, but suffered because the whole team was bad?

The way I saw it, he himself was also huge part of the problem too. Once again he gives the ball away very cheaply, even in times where he isnt exactly under threat.
Feel free to post stats, and of all the players.

Going toward the end with 1 defender, not many options to pass unless primarily passing backward.

We did alright structurally defensively until the goals. We go out open space in second half. Expected there would be too much space to cover, who would expect winning every ball when you have to cover for a CB being targeted with aerial ball and physical play?

We both watched the game right,

Defensively he wasnt really bad, that one moment was stupid and he maybe got beaten easily later in the match but cant really blame him. But more in possession, dwelling on the ball unnecessary, poor passing and prime example of that was in the last seconds. Pass the ball to Young, and he takes so long and loses the ball.

I think it's starting to become clear his ability isn't so 'Oh my lord why did Chelsea sell him to us he's gonna win us the league and everything else'. A good player, but he has some very evident flaws. Not 100% buying into this whole 'he's tired' thing either.
He's a bloody DM, anyone thinking he was gonna win us the league is bonkers. He's also been burdened with the creativity in midfield, because Hererra seems to have only one one type of pass, and that is to hit it as hard as he can into open space and hope one of our quick players gets to it.

When he is allowed to play in his role he is a good player, but with Pogba and Fellaini injured he has to to other roles.

Hes missing pogba a bit thats for sure. Shouldnt have to turn to him to be the one dictating games and it seems hes been given that role and he isnt good at it, at all. Leave him to be a defensive mid.

He's a good player. He's surprisingly tidy and nimble on the ball for somebody so tall, but he's not great when pressed and is extremely reliant on his left foot. In big games or games where we aren't in the ascendancy he has struggled.

Don't get me wrong, he's still been and is one of our better players, but it sort of ends there. He's just a good player.
He's a very good player, on his day he's great. He's better on the ball than a lot of people thought before he came here. Very good at breaking up play and to me I disagree, he's very comfortable on the ball and fine when pressed. In big games? We've played one big game all season which was at Liverpool.

The reality is he's just joined the club and it hasn't helped that the clear partner to him in Pogba came down with an injury. He then got stuck alongside Fellaini and now Herrera, who despite United fans crying for to get a chance in the team again, has done absolutely nothing to prove himself with Fellaini/Pogba out injured.

Matic hasn't done anything wrong. He's had some very good games so far and a couple of average ones where the team in general hasn't clicked. Nobody should be jumping on him at all right now as he's close to the bottom of the pile when it comes to any issues we have. I'd heavily expect him to shine even more once Pogba comes back and we hopefully get a better midfield balance.

I thought he was poor today. He was dwelling on the ball for way too long when we needed urgency in our play. His passing just wasn't good enough either. He's been great for most of the season but today he was out of it.

Forced to play a role not suited to him because none of Mata, Mkhitaryan, Herrera or Lingard stepped up. He's not an attacking midfielder which is all today displayed. Dallied on the ball around the final third as he didn't know what to do with it and can't play a through ball in that type of congestion.

Not really the player to point fingers at today to be honest. His job is to compact the midfield defensively, free up others to go forward and to retain possession. In that sense he wasn't at fault for either of the goals and United had 78% of the ball, it's up to the players I mentioned before to provide the creative spark, not him. People knew this even before today so this shouldn't be news to anyone and as such he shouldn't be criticised as highly as others.

This.

Asked to be a creative midfielder today, just not his job. United without Pogba are shite.

He's not inidually winnning us the league, but a puzzle piece in our best team to get us up there. Pogba injury just took away from the team.

Chelsea can make do with more midfield solidity as they're letting more space and more goals in and it's making it more difficult for them to see out game.

In possession, Huddlesfield cut the easy spreading to wing path well. In first half, the wide forward Martial was marked out of the game. Lingard couldn't keep width well. Huddlesfield forced us to go through the central which we're poor collectively as a team. Mata even at his best was not that good having men breathing at his back. Herrera Matic, even Carrick ain't gonna unlock this kind of compact central defensively shape (the game call for Pogba style of player. Other option is go long which we only have Lukaku. Fellaini can be a good help here. The first goal happened when Mata tactically felt the need to find some space for himself to get on the ball and get the passing going. He made mistake, but that's how good Huddlesfield defensively was.

Your prime example is one of few mistake, and when the team didn't set up best for you to pass. If you remember LVG games, there were plenty of times players were instructed to keep the passing game going and even in the end when we need to have a go for it, they just pass back when being pressed. Jones, Rojo, Carrick, Herrera, Schneiderlin, Bastian, Blind ... all took part of this back pass regime. That would get you better passing stats, does it matter at that moment, chasing result?

Everything around him was a shambles. I’m worried that he’s going to be run into the ground because he is forced to do too much on his own, like Pogba last season.

I still don't think he's had a bad game albeit he hasn't been in his best form. The whole team is a shambles at the minute which falls on the coaching staff, and even the he's still been alright.

Seemed like a one man midfield when we had the ball. Seemed like the only player capable of passing the ball forward or switching it wide. Everyone else seemed to feed him the ball to switch it rather than spreading the ball themselves, which slowed us down. We seem to have so few players in the side who can play a pass more than 15 yards.

Wasn't his usual brick-wall-self in defence and made a few errors, but overall we looked wide open in the middle, as we have done since Pogba got injured. I still don't know where Herrera was supposed to be playing but it didn't seem to be helping Matic. Sometimes it looked like right back, sometime right centre back in a back 3, sometimes in a roaming midfield role running in to the channel. He just seemed to be everywhere he shouldn't have, and rarely showed for the ball like he was always so good at doing.

How is playing the easy pass forwards worse for chasing results than taking long on the ball, and unneccessary lisk and losing possession, whilst the entire team is infront of you?

You claimed you watched the game, and you can't remember your prime example? Go rewatch that. 2 players pressed him for the easy option to pass it side way. There was another bank of Huddlesfield players to prevent an easy quick forward on ground pass. What is your opinion on being possibility to pull off a great long ball in that situation, given several seconds before that many other player with so much time on the ball failed to get those ball in well enough?

Edit: Fixed the above, I meant spreading the ball to wing, further up, which is crossing position. Sideway is same old unproductive in this momemnt as I explained in previous post.

He's tired and Herrera's forgotten how to be a midfielder. Read somewhere he's played 3 full games in 8 days. Not ideal when you're being asked to run midfield all by yourself, both offensively and defensively.

Like i said in match day thread, seems people want him to shield, pass, create, assist, score while others can go on vocation, fair enough.

No wonder you can see comments today like "we playing like Afroman is playing" guess thats related with some long balls and you know why is that? Because lazy clowns, enjoy taking easy way while attacking and ping ball to Afroman, they get used to easy life and because they dont need to develop attacking play while Afro is there, they repeat same shit when he isnt, due being clueless and out of ideas in final 3rd.

For those who think that him being tired is bullshit, guess you never watched him in Chelsea. Play him in midfield 3 and no problem, put him without rest in midfield 2 to do work for 2 and he gets drained.

Needs help, plain and simple. I love Herrera but he's playing too erratic at the moment, leaving Matic with that much more to do. Fellaini keeps things simple and his size really affects the opposition and well Pogba is Pogba. Matic and Herrera just don't work in a midfield 2.

I do remember that example, it is you that cant as at worst it was a diagonal pass to the right, in front of him. But it seems that you want to absolve any form of criticism of him, I'll leave it here. We will both see how the season will pan out.

Diagonal to the right? Go watch that again. The second bank of Huddlesfield pressers (from Matic position) was there checking on the passage to Valencia...

Edit: if it was always a good option, Valencia's, why did Mkhi didn't pass it to him instead of Matic? Or Valencia was never in good position to receive the pass from his teammate in this instance to begin with?

Reeks of carrick a few years ago when he played every game with partners like cleverly o shea.
That team also had Ronaldo and peak rooney though a luxury we currently don't have

I'm very disappointed with anders performances these last couple of weeks

Funny you mentioned Carrick. If Carrick from those years was in the midfield, we would have looked 100x better. People are blaming Herrera for some weird reason even though Herrera was quickly moving ball forward every opportunity he got. Matic meanwhile, despite being solid defensively added nothing to our attack. Carrick was equally good in defense if not better, but had way more in his offensive arsenal compared to Matic.

Entire game it seemed like Matic was either passing sideways or hoofing ball forward poorly to no avail.

If we insist on playing Matic, we either need to pair him with Pogba who is creative enough to compensate for Matic or play two fullbacks aggressive fullbacks who can actually create chances, otherwise he seem to take much more away from the team's attack.

Carrick is another level, but even someone like Daily Blind, when he was used as center back, was much much better with ball than Matic is. He used to put really good through balls from the back. Matic with all that space and possession just doesn't seem to have the ability.

I have said this many times against Southampton, Liverpool and even now. People cannot & shouldn't expect Matic to be a creative player and player who can dictate our tempo. The guy never does such a thing at Chelsea!! He is a water carrier type of player!!

But never mind of that. The first goal, his positioning was bad. I don't know if it was Jose's instruction but why the distance between him & defenders are so far. As a result, when Mata lost the ball, there is no defensive midfield to protect the centre backs.

Relentlessly kills any kind of tempo. I know it’s not his job and all but since he is a footballer who have gotten a lot of early season praise, it’s worth noting the limitations. Ah well...can do with a better partner.

That is because without Pogba he is being asked to do too much, he shouldn't have to be the one playing forward passes, Herrera should do that.

I know it’s not his job and he is good at what is his ‘job’ but I find it difficult when footballers are branded so one dimensional these days. Like being a specialist means, you have to be really shit at the rest.

We're missing that settled midfield, Pogba the outlet who draws men for Mkhi to have space. With the constant swapzies going on his form like anyone in the team was bound to dip a little bit. I just don't have that much confidence in the levels of our attack when we are missing Pogba. Herrera seems to not really fit Matic's style for some reason.

Oh wow...

Moving swiftly on from this madness it’s almost fecking heart-breaking watching Matic somehow be the only United midfielder a) capable of taking it past a player before releasing the ball and b) popping up where you need/expect him when the opposition are on the attack. Literally a one man show in the middle of the park.

Imagine we hadn’t signed him? Feck me. How atrocious would our season have turned out by now?

Gotta agree with this. The amount of times Hererra would look at a wide player in acres of space and then turn and make a sideways or backwards pass...

Matic saw the same opportunities and would spread the ball so we could attack them from wide.

It didnt help that Lingard was his usual self and offered no creativity.

Hererra was absolutely pish again. Fellaini’s injury was a huge chance for a player we all want to succeed to nail down a place in the team. Don’t think he could have failed the audition harder if he tried. I think it might actually be the biggest disappointment of this season.

He's basically a one man midfield these days. He is having to defend, expected to dictate play and also contribute to attack. He is simply not that player. Him and Herrera are too similar and don't work well at all. Also he sometimes dwells on the ball way too much, just pass it quickly.

Poor in this match but to fair, he's played a lot of football and he looks knackered as he's been basically a one-man midfield with Pogba out.

Kept trying to play through the middle today, dwelling far too long when a diagonal to the wings would've released our widemen to do some havoc quickly.

Is it just me who thought he was at fault for the first goal? He should have been ready for the cutback amd closer to the scorer. And if Mata loses possession he should as DM be there to sweep up for him.
