I flew with them on Sunday and I have to say they were brilliant, even sorted out some problems caused by Lufthansa, who are the worst company I have ever had the misfortune of dealing with in my whole life.
I've been flying with them for years and never had any problems, other than the usual problems related to all U.S. carriers - paid checked bags, no free booze, no free meals etc.

I think this last problem is basically just the tip of the iceberg in terms of a more militant mentality all flight crews and gate people have assumed in the post 9/11 era where every communication between aircrews and passengers is done as a law enforcement communication, not as a customer service one.

United settled with the doctor for an undisclosed amount today. I wonder how much they had to pay him?
If I had to guess it's in the millions

Agree never to beat him up again, plus $50k for medical bills?

I'd say he got about $3m, with about 40% of that to the lawyer. Total guess of course.

They probably had to offer him enough to convince him no to take them to court. So the fact he agreed to settle makes me believe that him, his lawyer and their families are settled for life. I'd say at least $10m.

Knowing probably not enough about the case I'm a little confused about why United would have had to settle? I thought they do have the right to remove people from their flight? So damages due to the injuries should be on the security team who aren't United employees?

Again I almost certainly don't know enough about the case.

Even if they are legally in a decent position Its probably more about avoiding a protracted legal wrangle with ongoing bad PR. If they can just end this now it makes sense.

Yeah I'm sure they're sick of being in the news at this point. I guess even if a trial did clear them they'd still have been guilty in the eyes of the paying public.

My understanding is that once you've boarded there are only certain very specific things that would give the airline the right to remove a passenger and none were met.

As you'd imagine, wanting to take some airline staff instead of a paying customer isn't one of those reasons.

Parents on Delta flight told they would 'lose their kids' if they didn't give up seats

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/05/04/delta-apologises-family-four-forced-flight-hawaii/
That's a bit of a weird one. They booked three seats - for three adults - with the intention to also sit two toddlers on their laps. One of the adults (their eldest son) didn't check in for the flight, so the airline wanted to give his seat away. Now you'd think that common sense would prevail and they could use the seat they paid for but they should have realised that airlines are strict about seats being allocated to named individuals, for obvious reasons.

Honestly, there seems to be something very wrong with the way the industry work.
I know it's standard practice to overbook and have written that before, but when these things create so many problems for people, they should think of their reputation and bend to the people who already are on the plane.

Noticed United employees have been overly nice at the airport recently, almost comically so.

It's not that the whole situation isn't idiotic and stuff on UA's part, but isn't taking an infant in such a shit weather for a flight to a place where it's probably even hotter just idiotic and irresponsible?

You can't stop life and not travel for a few summer months.

Not to mention that if it as ot enough to harm a child then many old people or people with health issues would be at risk. Sounds like a straight up OH&S issue that the airline need to address.

I can just imagine the memo sent to employees - 'Resist all your instincts to be a douche and just be over the top nice'

And to think that's all you need to actually preserve your rights on a flight, get a video of it and make sure social media spreads it. Rather than actually act like human beings
