The GOAT discussions unfairly leave out midfielders and defenders. It's not outlandish to have him as a top 10 player of all time.I can see someone make the case for Pele, Maradona and Messi, but this is just ludicrous.
Because usually they are not as good as the attackers. If you have the chance to get one from the best attacker, midfielder and defender in the world, more often that not, you get the attacker. No coincidence that from 10 most expensive signings of all time, there are 8 attacking players. On top 20, there are 16.
Having a great attacker increases the chances of winning more than having a great keeper, defender or midfielder (in most cases). That is why, in these discussions (same as for the best player currently in the world, Ballon D'Or etc), the attacking players dominate the lists. Nothing unfair about it.
His battle v godin and gimenez should be fascinating. Ronaldo regularly gets the better of Atletico and id say the rest of the Uruguay defence isn’t quite at Juan Fran/vrsaljko Filipe Luis level.
Maybe quaresma or Bernardo Silva steps up but Portugal’s chances hinge more on ronaldo here than maybe any game in their history. Sure he was brilliant v Spain but that was a gloves off “we should both get 6 points anyway” kind of match, this is straight knockout and if he performs to the occasion he’ll be a candidate for POTT even if they don’t get past France/Argentina.

Only to someone who knew nothing about Iran and Morocco which was absolutely not the case to anyone on the pitch or to any of the portuguese fans watching. If we lose the Spain match we'd have been in big trouble. We drew and we were still in big trouble.
As for the Uruguay match, I think it will be as cagey as football matches get and it's going to be a very difficult match for a forward to look great in. It feels like a 0-0 that goes to penalties or a game decided on set pieces and defensive mistakes. How we hold up defensively will be far more important than how we do in attack.

Personally, my problem with that title is that there is a clear bias for goalscorers. For all I know the best player ever is a CB or a DM.

I don't think it's about goalscorers. Or at least it shouldn't be. Maradona isn't considered that by many because of merely goalscoring. It's probably because it was obvious he was a once in a few decades footballing genius. Of course application is as important. But it's hard to define genius. Like federer in tennis. You can see the gifts/the class. They stand out from a mile away.
