Maguire hasn’t really made much effort on his part here and that’s what it would take to get a transfer like this over the line. Guess he doesn’t want it enough.
For better or worse, he just doesn't seem like the type to kick up a fuss and act like a baby to get a transfer, it should be commended, but I'd bloody love him to do it if it would help get him here.

So you expected a 23yr old coming from the Portuguese league to be an immediate starter for Man Utd? Makes sense. The only thing it suggests is that Mourinho identified 2 young players who he thought have potential and bought them.

We don't even know if the club is actually trying to sign another CB right now. And even if we did sign someone, we don't know who they'd replace in the squad.
Well at Benfica he was in the same defense as Ederson and Semedo who became starters for City and Barca respectively.

Unless Maguire kicked up a massive stink it was always an unlikely transfer so close to the transfer window shutting.

Transfer speculation is now big business. Clicks and betting. I wouldn't be surprised if there were employees at certain outlets specifically engineering rumours.

You are not entirely wrong but, most transfer links are going to come from agents leaking to the press.

In Madrid's case it isn't even close to be fair. They trump us in almost every category (bar in revenue, where we generate 4m more than them).
This is true.

If you look at the social media stats for us against them it’s literally miles off. Like us compared to Arsenal.

That includes their players. I don’t mean just their star ones. I mean their entire squad v ours.

On Maguire: this is the new truly coined-up EPL environment we live in. The biggest club can’t even poach a defender from Leicester.

Good for the league overall. But shite for us.

Ah ok. So we know the interest was genuine. Puel confirmed it was United which made the apoorach.

In this day and age it's nice to see a player not kick up a fuss and act like a baby to get a transfer

Happy with either right now. Harry offers not more potential buy Tony is the better defender

I swear if we pay >75m for Maguire, I'd lose all hope in player valuations.

It won't even be illogical given previous sales but I just think we should be spending such huge money on the attack which is what wins you games in the current PL.

We’ve obviously working on all 3 at the same time. Still think Toby is the one we want.

Not sure who i want most between him and Alderweireld. Maguire being English and younger is a huge plus though.

It's a massive reason. We're Man Utd, we should have the best English talent, seeing as we're the most successful English club. I think so many people from outside England fail to grasp this point. I want English talent that are good enough for us, it's how it should be.

We’re an English club.
Exactly. I think some of the fans who are not English don’t get this. We are English, and if there were two identical players (clearly this is hyperthetical and could never happen) and one was and English and the other was not, the English player would be preferable every time. We are from Manchester and I’d prefer a home grown lad every day of the week, and I would like a reasonable proportion of the players we buy to be English.

If we do have a genuine choice between Toby and Maguire, I’m torn. Toby should in theory have the most immediate impact, but Maguire is not far behind (he’s not a prospect like Mina), and could be our CB for the next 7/8 years.

Being an English club is hardly a reason. I accept the homegrown quota argument though.
It’s more of a personal preference. Great United sides have always had great English leaders. The same way Barca have always had great Spanish players and Bayern great Germans.

So we’re getting Toby AND Harry now?
I do think it was disruptive to Uniteds team play that we couldn’t play a consistent pair at the centre of defence.

United should be targeting the best talent regardless of their nationality.

correct. The best British players should be a a priority though. Especially when filling the homegrown quota. Fill those slots with the best of a bunch. If two talents are at a similar level but one is british and one is from elsewhere, id prefer us to pick the brit.

I’m American and I feel this way. I’ve always thought clubs (not just United) should be self sufficient and self sustainable in a sense. This is the literal point to having and investing in an academy. It doesn’t even have to necessarily be English or British players (though it would be nice and some of Fergie’s last few signings fit the bill) but players that are already on United’s books.

Looks like we’re in for both Maguire and Alderweireld and it being a case of get whichever one we can, never understood the “preparing a bid” thing though as surely Ed calls up the opposite person from the other club and negotiates a price then it’s put into an official bid on paper ?

It's mostly likely the discussion of the structuring of the deal. Very rarely do clubs just plonk the lump sum of the transfer in each other's accounts. Transfer fees are more often that not paid out over a period.

I don't much rate him.

But I also laughed my arse off when Chelsea signed Cahill.

The guy is sitting there with every meaningful club medal available to him at home.

Maguire is easily as good as Cahill was back then.

Indeed. Identity is essential to forging dynasties - Barcelona and Juve have seen immediate returns to prominence in the past decade when they began embracing domestic talent again. Liverpool reached a European Cup final with AOX, Milner, Henderson, Gomez, Trent AA, Robertson etc....

It’s outrageous that you have to explain the importance of an indigenous identity to United fans, especially ones who are only such because of the unprecedentedly
glorious Ferguson era that embraced and benefitted from it.

Such moronic snobbery saw the club spend twice as much on Lindelof last summer as what Maguire cost Leicester, despite his impressive performances for Hull against the United. The same applies to Robertson; Ferguson used to be all over these kind of signings.

He was also incredibly cheaper.
