Don't know why some are melting down. We don't know what's going on.

Really dont understand this. His biggest weakness is movement and yet all you are trying to convince themselves and us that he would be great under managers with high demands in off the ball movement and workrate. I could imagine that none of them would even play him as much as Mourinho. He is running only with ball at his feet, when he pass or looses the ball he starts walking towards ball. Mourinho is asking only for defensive responsibility from him and he cannot accomplish this, how he can do running up and down to create space for his teammates in systems under those managers. No way. Not to say the wingers they have at pool and city. He woulnd get into Spurs first team. We dont have sigle classic winger and he is still not able to make RW or LW his own, which is there to take.

Another one is to try him as a centre forward which is even more baffling. This role is absolutely not for him and his style and mentality. This position is all about movement and workrate and you will see the ball only few times during the match and have to make most from it surrounded by CBs and MFs. No one who ever played football would say he is more suited for CF. He is really shit with his back to the goal. He is more effective when he can prepare position for himself on the wing and run at defenders. He wouldn't have such a opportunities as a CF.

In preseason he was playing against mediocre teams and was not able to do anything. I really like him as a player since he started against liverpool, but he is really frustrating. The talent is here to see and he just need add a little bit of work to it to be a really great player but somehow he doesnt take his chances and dont care. Sometimes i wonder that its not his will but ability, that he cant last long in high tempo and think his stamina is really on low levels.
Thank god this guy is not our manager- sounds too much like Jose

Exactly. He was good under LVG because the team was very static and used to depend on getting the ball to him and allow him to dribble. With his atrocious movement I doubt any manager who loves high pressing will like him. His movement is nothing compared to the running Salah, Mane, Sterling and Sane do the whole game even if they have a day off they keep running and creating havoc in spaces. Martial gets invisible a lot through the game before pulling a moment or 2 of brilliance. Don't think Klopp or Pep will withstand this.

Spot on. Cannot see Martial playing CF with his atrocious movement and workrate.

No harm in securing him to a longer contract but he needs to buck his ideas up because no top manager will put up with his last 8 months or so whether it's Jose or his replacement

I'm not ready to give up on the boy yet. He's one of the few players we have that can actually take on a defender and beat him. So he promises to at least penetrate the defense and potentially bring some defenders to him to free up Lukaku. I'm not sure Sanchez can do that anymore. Plus he's young. He needs to keep his head up and stay motivated though.

You misunderstood, he has no choice right now but if his rumors of a contract extension which have been going on for a while is true, that's where the concern comes in, he should refuse any extension and force the club to move him if he cares about his career. There's no guarantees Mourinho will be gone by the end of the season, and until that happens Martial is going to lose more precious time on the field, just waiting this out and he's far too talented for that. It's such a waste and just a dick-swinging competition between the club's executives and a
coach who can't seem to get anything out of a talent like Martial
....who has shown he's someone who can be productive for this team last season
.
Here we go again...I've seen people across different threads try do this and thought it was idiotic, within one sentence is mind blowing!

There's an inherit contradiction in that sentence, if he's shown he can be productive last season then the coach IS getting something out of him.

You can't have both just because it suits your argument. I'm fine with people saying he should play more or that the coach could get more from him as a striker even though i disagree but lets stop with this bollocks

I mean if it is actually happening, it's a giant vote of lack of confidence in Mourinho from the board and is only going to exasperate things. If at least he was sent out on loan, it would be respecting Jose's vision and giving the player development and if Jose is gone, then you can bring him back next season and see how it develops under a new manager.

Hope it's true. With the right manager who trusts him & gives him a run of games I think he can become a top player.

Thank goodness Woodward and the board still recognize his talent and would fight hard to keep him against a certain special ones wishes.

Martial FC 1-0 Cult of Jose

Jose's defiance at the end has me hoping he turns it around as it seems he really wants it and will give it his all.

There really isn't any contradiction, yours is just a lazy argument. You think that because Martial succeeded for a stretch, it's because of Mourinho to some extent. I would agree if he had shown things he didn't show his very first season here, oh and also if I conveniently forgot all the ways Mourinho has taken shots at him, or not let him play through bad patches like many of the other players. I'm sure the way he has handled him was just wonderful for a young player's confidence.

So yes, you can absolutely have both, because some players can have good moments despite their manager, not because of him.

Would be delighted if Martial stayed.

If that Times story is correct about the new 5 year contract, then he must have probably been given reassurances that Jose won’t be here next season as just can’t see him signing a long term deal like that when Mourinho clearly doesn’t trust him.

I'd give him a new deal. He's on £75k. Surely he's worth £100k.

We should be celebrating keeping him instead we are celebrating knowing this means Mourinho is definitely gone. Thank goodness go manage Portugal.

 I don't think anyone believes here that board is stupid from financial POV. Securing an asset, in this case a player is no brainer for anyone.
People belived that we will offer Martial for Willian or Alderweirald during the summer transfer window. They were worried that he would go on to join the KdB, Lukaku and Salah list.

One of your last posts is quoting someone on here that he'd had 3 player of the month by xmas. So that's been downgraded to just 'good moments' now?

So when you said the coach 'can't seem to get anything out of Martial' then 3 consecutive player of the months doesn't count? Yes or no will do really

Maybe you're saying the coach can't get anything further than player of the month performances out of him? No that can't be right

That Martial can put in good performances despite poor coaching but he can only do so for a period of 3 months after which he forgets everything? Hmmm

There is many type of strikers - there has historically been strikers who drops deep to initiate play whilst other strikers are their to make runs - the guy is made to play as a deeper lying support striker who plays off to the left of a normal traditional striker - made to take the centre of defence on directly allowing the other striker space to move in to space. Which makes abundant sense to use because that is how Romelu lukaku tells everyone he actually likes to play too; off the right hand side off the shoulder of the defender.

No one is trying to convince anybody that this guy is meant to lead the line upfront by himself- he drops way too deep centrally to receive the ball than strikers like Rashford or Lukaku who prefer to run from the ball - but why people convince others that he cant play the role I just mentioned?

I've said it before- why cant he play the role Delle ali plays next to Kane? playing just off him who normally is much deeper than Kane on the field who recieves the ball in deep areas. He will normally poke balls to kane or eriksen before re-arranging himself in a space to receive the ball again ball to feet; not to make runs behind the defence in every run so that Spurs suddenly play with two strikers all the time. To act like Martial would never make a run is just made up rubbish.

Look at the positions Ali plays, look at the area's where he is playing with skill and taking his man on - he was fantastic in his first season where he would line up behind Kane as a CF/CAM player. Though now a day he has fallen a bit deeper ( i think for the worse)

I watch this guy & I think that Martial could do what he is doing playing behind a proper striker who capitalises on chances. Ali is not their traditional AM either; thats Eriksen.

This is the type of positions he should be in where he can make quick plays or take on the central defenders directly.

Just those three alone in that video - we have yet to set them up in a position to actually start the damn game like that. Absolutely sack worthy.

Not scored a goal in eight and a half months.
Having played the equivalent of about 7 or 8 games in that time. In all competitions. But don't let facts get in the way of a crap stat.

Anyway, good to see the club seem to be making a stand on this situation. It's about time.

I’m not pro Mourinho in the slightest but Martial has been very poor. If he was at another club playing the half arsed way he is, I wouldn’t want to sign a player with that mentality no matter how good he is.

Even if the manager isn’t treating him fairly he should be giving his all on the pitch, absolutely no excuse for it.

Luke Shaw in the last few weeks is the prime example of that. Was in a similar situation to Martial, both dropped from their respected national teams in what were successful World Cup campaigns, one is showing fight, the other doesn’t seem as if he cares.

The same accusations were being levelled at Shaw before he was given a run in the team - lo and behold, he's now among our best performers again.

It's easy to criticise players for attitude, mentality and everything else that comes with it when they're sitting in the stands or being given stop-start minutes.

I'm not entirely the underlying issue with Martial, he can be easily perceived as not caring due to his personality and body language on the pitch, however he has always been acting like that even in his first season at United.

I hope he will do a Shaw this season but Sanchez is unlikely to be displaced unless Jose changes his formation and tactics

So going off that, the likes of Alexis,Rashford and Lukaku are all shite now as well right?

Jose FC loyalists do as much projection as anyone when they talk about a group being 'indoctrinated'
What is more rational, believing in a manager with a resume like his, who is considered as one of the best in the world, or believing in a footballer who has been here for 3 years and has yet to come anywhere close to his potential?

Not scored a goal in his last 14 appearances for the club in all competitions (700 minutes of football played).

Happy?

And what is it that you believe the club are "making a stand" against, exactly?

Do you think there could be a resurgence like like with Luke Shaw?

A new contract is actually great because it will force Martial to buckle up and put his down, and for Mourinho to try harder to incorporate him into the squad. Very smart from Woodward.

Lukaku and the lack of finishes, could mean Martial starting up top. You never know with Mourinho. He may be influenced by McKenna/Carrick which I think he was in his playing style Vs Tottenham. Things change very quickly in football.

The club are afraid of letting him go especially when the likes of Spurs are after him. He could potentially strengthen a rival, have a fantastic season and go into the France squad at the next Euros.

All big ifs but I wonder what his value would be then.

Club want a talent that we have scouted to reach his potential.

Thing is under Jose - any player that finds it hard is called as players that don't try or have some sort of mental problem. Lukaku didn't try hard enough at chelsea, De bryune was weak and lazy to run, Salah was mentally weak, Luke shaw is fat and doesnt have the mindset of a footballer, Martial is lazy, Rashford isnt jealous enough to be a striker then suddenly turning to be too jealous - you ultimately hear it all.

The truth is - Jose likes mentally and physically strong players to the 100% - A player that is mentally strong only up to 80-90% is not enough for him; not every player has to be an ibrahimovic - but for Jose that is wrong & if he struggles to get the best out of these players they are targeted directly as something faulty and wrong with them.

There was nothing wrong with shaw - he just needed the chance to work hard and have a proper run in the team from preseason to the start with him playing in his best position. Martial will kick it, play better when he is given the time to do so under tactics and a position that allows him to do so- when that happens people will suddenly act like he tried harder than he ever did before. Just because he is not good at making off the shoulder runs does not make him weak & lazy- its just that - that is not the type of football that gets the best out of him. The same thing was said to de bryune as he struggled to gallop on the right of midfield whilst on the other side Hazard was rocking it.

For putting his signature on a paper that says we still own his rights for another 5 years and he can’t force a move on a low fee next summer. How about that?
Exactly.

New contract doesn’t mean we can’t sell him. We can sell him for a bigger fee now. Pretty sure we gave Nani a new contract and sold him a year later.

I don’t recall that bit. I recall Shaw being called fat and unfit, which he certainly was or at least the latter one of the two. I remember people calling him not good enough because he was shaky positionally in some games, which he was. I don’t recall anyone saying he doesn’t try enough while on the pitch, which is what’s being leveled at Martial.
