Why Fred didn't start yet alone get off the bench is baffling.

It’s not baffling at all. Herrera was off, made no real positive impact on our attacking or defending and was subbed off before he was sent off but not before being at fault for a goal, but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s been better than Fred has and was rightly held in higher regard prior to his injury.

I would have brought Fred on as soon as he committed the first foul after his booking.

Though he's starting this game because he's training well, showing that sharp plays he tend to make.

Guess not.

No complain about his effort, he tried. I mean, he's not the one that pick the team.

So it's baffling then?

Him or Matic weren't great but who were they meant to pass too when our front line are standing around like statues?

Watch our front 3s movement off the ball next game then go watch Barca, Liverpool, City, Juventus..etc. It's not just about scoring, movement is key!

Happens after an injury. It ruins player's momentum... another reason why We need to have quality backups.

He's not suited to game where we need to cut open the defense. Not atleast he and Matic together . We needed Fred to start today . Herrera passing range is very minimal and plays it safe 90% of the times. It's usuless when he does this when we have ball most of the times. Fred would atleast try to drill in direct passes to our forward .

that's why the club bought him. some people questioning why we spend on fred and he's no upgrade on our midfield- to disorganise park the bus teams he's very comfortable at making those passes like the one that got lukaku's winner vs southampton which went unnoticed.

He's fine in big games where he hustles and harries. But in games where the opposition sit back and invite us onto them, he's just not good enough, hence leaving Pogba with the job of being the sole creator.

Exactly. We should be going into these games with attack minded midfield . Against arsenal Fred played a very important role in creating the chances we've created. Hope Ole could recognize this.

And Herrera played a more offensive role against Chelsea and had a great game. He's been one of the most important players under Ole and adds an energy and mobility to the midfield that nobody else can.

After stinking the place up for the majority of the season, Fred is now a better option after a couple of reasonable performances?

I said in games like today . Where the team basically packs the box and plays low block . Chelsea have been quite adventurous under Sarri so gaps were naturally there and Herrera was able to captualize

Arsenal are hardly bus parkers which is the example you gave re Fred. What are these other examples of Fred ripping apart teams in a low block? PSG?

Wolves are a lot more than a low block counter attacking side. They are a good side who have outplayed good teams this season with good technical players in midfield and were playing at home. They're not Burnley.

Form is everything. A player who's coming out after a month from injury vs a player that seems to have shown good promise past few games. It's not that hard. Matic, lingard, Martial , Herrera all heavily involved when all of them were injured for a month . How will they all suddenly click after being out for long? It made sense today to keep playing Fred who has shown glimpse of good form rather than playing someone directly from the doctors table.

Herrera has trained all week and if Ole picked him, you have to assume he was fit to play. In a key game it is completely natural that a manager looks to players he trusts who have done it for him in the past, rather than a player "in form" after one good game.

It's easy in hindsight to say "he should have played x". The fact United dominated possession against Wolves shows it wasn't a bad choice. Wolves are very good on the ball and dominated long spells of possession at Old Trafford earlier this season.

Fred's wayward passing would be very dangerous against a team who are so potent on the counter attack.

It's the front 3 that didn't perform for United which is the area where they had no options on the bench.

Of course we have to talk in hindsight as game has already happened and it was a piss poor game from us . Wolves were happy to give us the ball and sit back as we were so impotent with it . Its not like we pressed and got back possession . Our front 3 had no room to operate as wolves were sat deep . Our midfield needed to pierce the play which they failed to do. This was the case whole of the match. Id like us to be a little proactive and try to change things at halftime where Perera or Fred could've been brought in . Instead they came on after we conceded two . Defiantly today was wrong team selection /formation .

The problem is Wolves' attack have been on form and Ander makes us much better defensively than Fred does. They scored 2 in the match and if we played more open chances are there would have been more

He is critical to the high press we want to play though. Without him the last few games we have gone back to sitting deep and trying to bully our way to goals. If we want to progress, we need to build it around the style he lets us play. We dominated them in midfield after all, our problem was two of our three forwards being just back from injury.

Spot on.

Against weaker teams who park the bus, Matic and Herrera is over kill, I've said it many times.

That Fred got no minutes.

I never mentioned Herrera, I was talking about Fred.

You said it was ‘baffling Fred didn’t start yet alone get off the bench’. It is obvious why Fred didn’t start - we had our first choice midfield three back. You never mentioned Herrera, but him playing in midfield is the principle reason for Fred not getting minutes. Whether you disagree with it or not, it is in no way difficult to understand Solskjaer’s selections.

Love this lad and has honest as the day is long but Utd's midfield is easy to play against because in absence of Pogba, Herrera and Matic offer little to nothing offensively. Stop Pogba, you stop us. Not say Fred is the answer as he's too inconsistent at mo but you can see in him that a player of that type can offer could enable us to replace maybe two in one signing.

I love Herrera but he was awful against Wolves. The absence of his usual energy and drive was notable and made me think we had rushed him back too soon.

Next season, I would play him as a holding midfielder, then look to get someone more creative in the 8 role, especially against low block teams.

Pogba Herrera Playmaker

Something similar to what City do. Herrera has the legs to cover like Fernandinho does.

I agree. Eriksen would be lovely in that position.

I don't disagree with qualities that Ander brings to the team . Just that yesterday both team decided not to press for some reason . We needed a pssser from the midfield to give balls to our forward line and Herrera isn't suited for that . Maybe Matic could have been subbed and Herrera could've been asked to play deeper . We looked devoid of ideas yesterday and our manager didn't respond to correct that in time. That's my major worry .

Both Ander and Matic were too heavy for our midfield yesterday. That leaves Pogba as sole creator which was so predictable . We need to start being adventurous and start a attacking midfield in these type of games . If we start worrying about wolves scoring, we'd never play our game .

there's nothing Matic does that Herrera can't do. its time we started moving away from Matic and Herera combo tbh. Herrera, Fred, Pogba on paper looks stronger and more suited to park the bus teams. its a mystery that we haven't trialled it not even once.

How? When Ander and Matic have both played in easily our best football this season and our recent run of the best form in the league.

Matic isnt enough defensively alone. The only time the Matic and Pogba midfield has really looked like it worked was with Ander added as 3rd man. Then it looked good.

And its stupid to ignore the fact that we conceded 2 goals whilst playing a more stable side and that if we upset that we'd obviously be more open to 3 or 4 goals. No matter what we did we werent going to score 5 against Wolves

It is amazing how after a defeat it's because the tactics were wrong and "Matic & Herrera can't play together". This despite them playing exceptionally well together for weeks at the start of Ole's tenure.

Both were just back from injury and didn't play well. It happens.

We have struggled against low block teams. Wolves played extremely low block and we lacked that guile to slide in a grounded pass to our forward line. Fred would have helped deliver drill in balls to our forwards in this situation IMO. No one is saying Herrera and Matic combo is bad, just that we don't need to be that middle heavy in certain games where we are expected to create. City , Anfield , Chelsea away ofcouse i would go for that combo. Also saying that if we'd played Fred we'd conceded 4-5 goals is a poor way of looking at it. What if Fred had helped in unlocking the defense leading to a goal. Then Wolves would have to come and get us and it might have opened up to us scoring more. I'm for resting Matic and playing Pogba, Fred , Herrera more against low block oppositions.

Not really a mystery. Herrera is not suited to play in front of the defence. Which is why none of our managers has played him there. They are completely different players.

He has the quality to be a good squad player for a club of United size, never a starter. If we want to be a force again, we must put away all the average players out of the starting XI, and Herrera is one of them.

This.

So many people wanting him to play in the DM role, but he hasn't got the passing range nor composure to be effective in this position, especially for a top side where it requires the DM more than just being good defensively.

after watching several managers try and shoehorn mata into the RW role, when literally everyone could see that was a disaster, im not quite so able to just chalk things up to managers knowing better.

Managers play him there because there's no other position for Mata. The classic number 10 position is dying with most managers now prefer 4-3-3 with a holding midfielder and 2 energetic and attacking midfielders. Mata doesn't suit the new game, but managers find him and have to use him somehow as long as he's squad option.

To be fair Mata has been deployed in the central position behind the main striker but he was inconsistent as well and couldn't be relied upon

There was no room for them because they just stood around, there was no movement by the forwards for long periods of the match.
