I can't see why anyone can question this. £15m is a night on the piss for United!

If he flops we can still probably sell him for £10m and that £5m loss would be an investment in kicking Martial up the arse and showing him what committed energy and running looks like.

Nothing to do with the fee it's if James is the only attacking player we add, that's the problem.

James and another attacking player? that would be great. But if it's James alone then we're in trouble.

This is very true and the likes of man city dont hang around with transfer but they have more pulling power than us and a much better inner fabric.
Think the club have been ridiculously complacent after Sir Alex left and believed their own publicity. They have just gone from season to season thinking everything will be hunky dory. Now everything has come home to roost.

Every United manager has said that every summer and it has mainly not happened

LVG said it
Jose said it
Ole has now said it

I expect the same results
Rarely do you get the best deal jumping in early in a window.

One way of doing it is to line up deals a year in advance, i.e. buy and loan back. The selling team then get a risk free year of a player (i.e. injuries not as big a concern) and an extra year they might be otherwise concerned won't happen. We should consider forward planning more, I.e. lining up deals for budding potential. Longstaff would be a great example, let him stay at Newcastle another year, but get the deal signed at a reasonable price.

Yep. It is either we have things in place and we will get a few announcements or we are showing our usual incompetence. We seem to be hearing more about outgoings than incomings and it isn't even good then. We will spend the summer trying to get every last cent for these players, not get it and then be stuck with a lot of disgruntled players, yet are massaging the egos of players who are a common factors during our years of failure after SAF.
I haven't heard much about our outgoings, Ole said a lot of players wouldn't be here going forward. Yet we haven't sold anyone yet. Only Valencia and Herrera have gone so far.

I agree, I was simply pointed out signing all the players before preseason starts isn't going to happen, no matter what the manager says

If it's James alone then our whole setup are idiots! For a start James's natural position is not the right side where we desperately need quality.

I think James on the left makes sense as competition for Martial/ Rashford between LW and striker, I.e. the option for rotating around a bit more. Not suggesting James as a striker, but allows the other 2 to play there even if one is on the bench or unavailable.

He'd be significantly cheaper than a striker or backup striker, but allows us to in essence get that extra striker option.

I meant the Lukaku move, Pogba still being touted about, Darmian, is DDG stopping, Mata? All problems that could be off. Another problem is it could still be going on after the season has started. Europe's transfer window shuts later than ours. If they are going they need to go, otherwise it could mess our season up from the start. The people who run our club, typical men, can't multitask.

He’s played there plenty and he’s right footed and an actual winger. Reckon he’ll see much more of the right flank than the left.

No-one should be panicking about the transfer window as yet, give it at least another couple of weeks.

Every single day there have been multiple articles about Inter signing Lukaku with Conte in charge. Now he's been announced, there might be a bit of movement there but it seems no matter what the club do, it is lose-lose.

Sell players now for cheap = "The club is crap at selling players. Why can't we be more like Liverpool?"
Hold firm with asking price for players, will take longer to sell = "Why haven't we got rid of any of the deadwood yet? Can't we multitask?"

Buy players at high prices = Woodward/Club incompetence

Buy players at lower prices = No ambition, Woodward incompetence, OGS not good enough.

We all know how this works.

Yeah apart from Lukaku we haven't heard much else. So much work needs doing in so little time.

DDG and Pogba are constantly linked to moves away. I wouldn't put too much faith in what our management says.

Hardly any activity at all in the PL so far. Reckon it will all kick-off after the Nations League. Hope we’re not eyeing up any South American’s though - Copa America 14th June to 7th July.

Ole said he wanted his signings in time for preseason. This is why I'm surprised by our lack of movement.
Lack of movement shouldn't be a surprised this early on and with some competitions yet to come to a close (even if a lot of it doesn't really effect some of the players we're linked with). I would expect the majority of business for the majority of well organised clubs (and ourselves) to be conducted between June 10th and 28th (after Nations League has concluded) to be ready for pre-seasons in July. Our tour doesn't start until July 13th, so if we can get the players Ole wants before the end of June they'd have two weeks with the club before the tour begins as well. A lot of players will be on holiday during this time as well which can make things a bit trickier, but the vast majority of business will be done under the radar anyway, it'll be the announcements that happen out of nowhere a lot of the time. I wouldn't worry about lack of official announcements just yet, I think we'll see 3+ players announced before we go on tour.

Exactly.

I can see James/Fernandes/Wan Bissaka announced before we go on tour.

De Ligt perhaps depending on what happens.

People are acting like we go on tour in 2 weeks time, it's ages away yet. I think people forget right now many people are on holiday, only really a handful of people will be around doing the deals.

We normally do contracts from June 1st, so that's another reason why nothing has happened yet...

I think tomorrow we'll hear about things like DoF and maybe a player...

Such a daft loaded question @Loublaze, how many players have United signed in the past 19 years from the Championship or any lower domestic league?

A better question would be to ask how many top players in the PL have played Championship or lower league and the answer is plenty, not least your favourite former non-league Manchester United centre half.

United as a club have rarely looked at the lower league since the 90’s because we could simply let them join the likes of Tottenham and prove themselves in the PL first, then we’d simply use our financial strength and pull to take them.
You have to go a long way back to find a success story at united from a lower domestic league. Taking all players who have played in the championship or lower domestic leagues into consideration is broad because that would include players who were loaned out by PL clubs and players like Robertson who played in the championship but had two seasons of PL experience before his Liverpool signing (just mentioning him because he's been brought up as an example of a PL club-Liverpool, making a successful lower league signing).

This would also qualify players like David Beckham, Lingard, Kane and a slew of others. How many direct domestic league signings became top players anyway? Vardy comes to mind, but he remained with the club he helped gain promotion to the PL with. They don't need to be top players to be successful anyways, but if you only want top players you'll find its not that many, and none for United. Give me some top players signed from the championship in the last 19 years. Brooks and Maddison are current examples of good signings but they are not top players (yet).

Smalling was signed from PL club Fulham and made his PL debut in 2008/2009, two seasons before United signed him. He even played for Fulham in the Europa league in the same season at age 18 and they went all the way to the final, losing to Atletico Madrid. Nick Powell was subject to a lot of OTT praise by United fans when he was signed, and he had 64 senior appearances and 16 goals by age 17, much more impressive than James numbers at almost 22. So, plenty top players signed from championship or lower in the last 19 years. Name them

We get it. You don't want us to sign young players from the championship unless they're under 15 and have scored 30 goals 2 seasons in a row. But James isn't that. He isn't a sure bet, and he probably won't set the world alight instantly for us. But he may turn into a damn good player, maybe even a great one.

Seems like you base your info on it never happening before for us, but that doesn't mean that it won't? And at the price quoted it's a pretty low risk move. Why you would be so insanely opposed to this deal I really can't figure out.

The thing Lou hasn't quite figured out yet is how the transfer market has changed. In the past we’d let Spurs or Wolves take a chance on James instead and then swoop in after he’s Prem proven.
Difference now is that James would then be quoted at Zaha prices so you can be certain a lot more top Prem clubs will be taking chances on lower league players from now on as they can’t afford not to.

You should have told spurs before they signed Dele Ali. I wonder how stupid they fell now that they know that lower league players never make it in the EPL.

Who was the last player United signed from the championship or any lower domestic league that became a success? The odds are against him making it here. James is 21 going on 22 in a few months. Overmars was three years younger when Ajax signed him with way more first team experience.

I didn't claim James is two footed, I said he has a decent left foot/not afraid to use his left. I praised a few things about him, doesn't mean I don't think his game is mostly about his speed, doesn't mean I think he could be good enough for United. I predict he's going to flop, but will be pleasantly surprised if he doesn't.[/QUOTE]

What has any other player we signed from anywhere got to do with anything regarding James? Thats your weekest argument yet, which is an achievement in itself. Closely followed by "Overmars was three years younger" its real life not a computer game, players arnt tied to a certain development curve, the point is, Ajax signed a young flying machine with awful stats because they saw somthing they liked, just like we'r signing James because we see sumthing we like, it was an inspired move by Ajax, most people are willing to wait and see how it turns out for James.

You on the other hand, jump on anything and everything to try and prove he's rubbish. Even when his national team manager offers him glowing praise, you pick one tiny bit of what he said out, ignoring what was said either side of it (that selective reading thing again ) and try to turn it it into a negative. Like a child who'l stop at nothing to try to prove theyr right. I honestly dont believe you when you say you hope your proved wrong, you'l have your hand in your kegs the second he does sumthing wrong imo.

The stupid thing is, you dont need to,when he starts actually playing for us, we'l all see if he can be good for us or not, i know waiting for him to play games for us, before slating him any chance you get, might be a novel idea to you, but before Youtube, it used to be a decent way of judging a player.

Everyones entitled to there opinion and yours is as valid as anyone elses, but when start looking for negatives in absolutely anything about the lad, its like its an agenda and becomes boring.

And how can you say a right footed player has a good left foot, but not say theyr two footed?? Your good for a laugh if nowt else.

Well done, you named one signing United have made from lower leagues in the last 19 years and then threw the question back at me; thus proving my point.
A top player and/or a successful one? I thought that's what I was asking for and Powell doesn't fit that bill. Anyway, i've made my points. Im not impressed with the signing but for the club's sake I hope he comes good. I have every right to be skeptical as you do to be optimistic. Its no wonder players at big clubs question their board's transfer policies at times.
Rooney did it in 2010 in the 'no value in the transfer market' era and Hazard did recently at Chelsea after they signed players like Drinkwater and Barkley, PL proven players. Some of the players will be asking the same questions among themselves and James will have to win them over as well. Call it negative/mental but to me its having realistic expectations.

Alli came from MK Dons and Sterling from QPR
Good shouts although one could argue they were elite talents too good for the lower levels. Our new boy just broke through and didn't smash the championship like say Sessegnon did in his last season there

I’m neither optimistic nor skeptical, I just think I’d prefer United to buy a promising talent now for 15m than try to buy him again for 70m in three years.

My only opinion is that in today’s market it’s a very low risk signing and has feck all to do with showing ambition, nor is it a transfer policy for existing players to get angry about. Most likely, as I’ve argued, due to the changing market and the inability of United or City to even buy Harry Maguire, it’s the way the transfer system in England is going. Top teams are going to have to take more gambles in the Championship for English talent, simples, you have no counter argument to that and just keep rehashing the same flimsy arguments because you personally don’t like the idea.

I understand your scepticism, but it kinda seems like you're making him the only signing we'll make this window to add to our attack. If that's the case, I can see why you angle this as a negative signing on it's own. But I still think he'll offer our team something we need in attack right now. A hunger to get forward and run at defences with pace. He's still young and willing to learn it seems, and hopefully will fight for a place in the team.

I see this much more as a long term signing than the solution to all our problem that we have right now. We don't have the pulling power we used to, and to sign cheap talents might be a way to build a team instead of buying ready made starts who don't perform. If he doesn't succeed, £15 million is not a lot in today's market, and we can probably recoup that.

I think your realistic expectations might be a bit "blurred" considering how we've operated the last few years. We've bought so many players, yet very few have performed at their expected level. So you might think this will be another one, and therefore choose to rather be positively surprised if he does well than negatively if he does bad. If that's the case, that's fine. Your posts just make you seem a bit too harsh considering what we've seen from him so far and the price qouted for him. I'm not gonna try to make you agree with everyone else here, maybe just try to see it form their point of view.

I remember there was a thread about England world cup squad and how many of them were from lower leagues. Just had a quick check to see when did they play their first PL game or their breakthrough season.

Walker - Championship player when Spurs signed him and then loaned him to Championship in 2009-10 season. He was 20 and played in Championship.
Rose - Signed from Championship when he was 17 and then was loaned out to Championship side will he was 21 (with very few PL games played)
Stones - Signed from Championship team when he was 19 (or 4 months short of his 19th birthday)
Maguire - Signed from league 1 when he was 21. Played just 3 games and was loaned to Championship team again. He played his first full PL season when was 23. Before that it was all Championship and league 1.
Lingard - Played in Championship till he was 23
Kane - Barely played in PL when was 20. His first proper season in PL was when he was 21. Before that it was loans to Championship and League 1.
Vardy - Played in PL when was 27
Trippier - Played in PL when he was 24.
Cahill - Played in PL when he was 20. Again loaned out to Championship team when he was 22
Delph - Signed from league 1 team when he was 20. He was loaned out to Championsship team when was 21/22.
Young - Signed from Championship team when he was 21.
Alli - Signed from League 1 team when he was 19.

Like others also said, it's a wait and see game. You never know when these players breakthrough to bigger leagues. These are just from England world cup squad, with bit of google help, you can see many great players were playing in smaller leagues when they were 20-21.

Best example is Maguire. Played his first proper PL season when he was 23 and now ManUtd, City both want him and Leicester are asking for record breaking fee.
