Theres no need for the scare quotes, it has been widely regarded as torture by the UN and many other countries that arent complete shitholes like the US for decades.
While I agree on the ‘shithole’ moniker for this country, I just don’t agree with the UN et al on their views of solitary confinement. If a cretin like Manager has to endure solitary confinement for a period of time while his state trail happens, so be it.

He doesnt have to though. The government and the prison system choose to torture him because they routinely torture people under their control.

Sure, toss him into gen pop in Riker’s if he ends up staying there, that’s wise, even the infirmary would pose security challenges for him. There are other locations to house him close by & potentially more safely, but, if SDNY wants to put him into solitary confinement at Riker’s for whatever reason, so be it.

There are many countries that have figured out how to house people without inflicting torture or extreme violence on them. Maybe the US could take notes from some of them. The callous and sometimes gleeful attitude toward things like solitary confinement and prison rape by otherwise normal people in this country is sick.

Why should he get special treatment anyway? Why should any ‘celebrity’? He’s a crook and yet because he has rich friends and has been on TV apparently he deserves protection that a random crook doesn’t get. Put him in gen pop, and if that’s not a safe place then fix the system itself rather than deciding that some people deserve to be in danger every day and others are apparently special and need taking care of.

The system should be fixed. That doesnt make it okay to add one more torture victim to the list.

So of all the millions of Americans suffering in that cruel and broken system, Paul fecking Manafort is the one you want to defend?

That's pretty disingenuous of you. I'm sure you know me better than that to know I didnt just realize the justice system was broken on June 4th 2019.
Yeah I know, but Paul Manafort just really pisses me off. Sorry.

From what I’ve read on Manafort it seems that he’s been involved in some shady stuff worldwide with some big players. He is possibly at risk from them as much as he’s at risk from fellow inmates. We mustn’t assume the major threat to his safety is from burly blokes who just like a bit of aggro.

Rikers is very secure for various reasons which may be why he is there and keeping him in solitary may not be to torture him (as has been suggested) but to prevent him from being silenced. This Russia investigation is still ongoing from an intelligence POV and Russians are fond of killing people to keep them quiet or when they have outlived their usefulness. That way their secrets die with them. Manafort needs vey high level protection imo and maybe in his opinion too. He’s frightened for a good reason.

Pretty sure the solitary confinement in this case means he's going to be in a regular cell by himself with extra security, not thrown "in the hole" like they do when they're punishing prisoners for breaking rules/violence/etc

And I'm all out of bubblegum.
Wouldn't incarceration in general pop at Rikers be as torturous only in a different (i.e. ass-raped and beat down routinely) way?
I assume it's possible to find a middle ground between no one and everyone. Though it's a real indictment on the American prison system that being in "gen pop" is such a violent, dangerous, horrible experience. But that's what you get when your entire justice system (and possibly the culture at large) values straight punishment over rehabilitation.

Isn't that mainly just a TV thing? Numerous times prisoners who have left prison say it doesn't really happen all that much. Weird how so many people seem to talk about it with glee and TV/movies focus on it like some kind of fetish.

Wasn't fully serious on that bit but general assaults, extortion and intimidation do exist and I've read Rikers is one of the most dangerous prisons in the US.

Didn’t congress just vote to allow the committees to start suing in court over people ignoring them?
Tbh, I don't know. I always thought it was the DOJ that brings these cases before the courts.

Is it against US law to ignore a subpoena?

Soooooo....why is Trump still in power? Why's the law so slow in punishing Trump?

Because America is set up to protect the rich and powerful, not to hold them accountable.
I agree. My question about the law was tongue in cheek (failed I guess), because most people keep insisting on doing things the 'right way' and 'accordingly with the law'.
