Still don't know about him. I feel like he'd improve our squad but not necessarily our football, which is what we need more than anything. Maybe he'd allow us to build up better. Right now I think I'm more concerned about what happens towards the end of that buildup though.

I think he possesses a lot of qualities we’re missing in our back line - heading, driving and passing out from the back. Problem is determining how much that would even improve us and the fact he can be turned due to his lack of agility. Are we adding another issue to our squad for a lot of money? I can’t seem to see if it will improve is enough to warrant the money being spent.

I think he s a good fit with Lindelof. Lindelof biggest drawbacks are his heading and distribution. Otherwise he s pretty good. Maguire excels in both those.

I think Maguire/Lindelof will be in starting 11 with Smalling and Jones/Tuanzebe/Bailly as backup.

Lindelöf's plus point is meant to be his passing.

Maguire and Lindelöf wouldn't be a great combo, as you need that extra pace to compensate for Maguire.
Smalling and Maguire would be an aerially dominate combo, with passing, pace and one on one ability.

Or we can wait for the right buying opportunities that make sense for us long term.

For me, buying the wrong player, at the wrong price, is FAR worse than not buying anyone at all. If you don’t buy anyone, you can rectify it in the next transfer window and it costs you 6-12 months of progress. If you buy the wrong player, it can take 4-5 years to put it right. See Sanchez, Fellaini, and any number of other players bought in the last few years.

Don’t panic buy!
Hindsight is an exact science, speak to ever football fan of every club and with the benefit of it, will tell you about 'wrong buys' yet will have amnesia about the ones they thought wouldn't work out. Transfers aren't a science so who knows if they are gonna be wrong or not. I can say with confidence that he'll be an upgrade on anyone we have here.....

people are making are too much about pace, I genuinely cannot think of a World Class Central Defender that was renowned for having great pace, also Maguire isn't slow, he just looks it

I suppose it depends on your definition of world class, but I'd put Ferdinand in there as being so, and he was pretty quick.

If you're not quick, you have to be like Steve Bruce or Tony Adams were, and have superb reading of the game and one on one skills.

Pace (or lack thereof) was the reason why we sold Blind. In some leagues you can get away with it, like Serie A where the tempo is slower, but in our league it's pretty important. May not necessarily have to be a sprinter but still need to be quick off the mark at least.

yes but he wasn't a speed merchant like Michael Owen or Jamie Vardy for example, which some people seem to think is needed, obviously you need to be fairly quick but people are getting hung up on pace because of Maguire's build, he certainly isn't slow, or I would have seen him get done for pace all the time and I genuinely cannot remember a game where I left and thought Maguire got torn apart by someones pace, and contrary to the belief on here we don't sit deep we play quite a high line

So not worth it, if you pay that kind of money you expect the best defensive rock. If we invest in revamping the midfield and get a pro half the defensive problem will be solved. I expect bailly to pick it up this season.

Or rather go for toby, people keep comparing it to Sanchez style situation, but cb neither have to beat players with pace and neither they have to sprint as much as wingers. You can not compare every 29 year old to Sanchez or mata. Defenders have always lasted late till their 30's. Just because you had poor experiences with Matic and mata does not mean every player near30 should be judged like that. Juventus had made a fortune signing players like these on the cheap or for free. I don't feel he will be a bad deal for us for the price. And regarding salaries, how much more it will be than he's getting at spurs? Not much
I hear you but I'm not bothered about how much he costs cause it's not relevant to me. The argument about how much players costs ended when they paid million pounds for Trevor Francis. It's now like playing Monopoly, money has no value in terms of transfers, I'm just interested in what it means on the pitch. Harry for me is in the top five CB in the league, we haven't got a CB in the top 15 so whilst we are worrying about the costs, we kick off in a few weeks from now and I'd sooner take a risk with him than see another season with those two idiots. If people are worried about the money, we could have saved millions getting rid of those two.

What worries me more is that we've extended their contracts....

He's a very good passer of the ball, clearly, the poster is mistaken or perhaps just clueless. His biggest weakness is aerial threats. In the NT Granqvist helps him with this but it's obviously not a strength of any CB at United.

Maguire would provide a needed bit of steel next to him although I still feel that there are a lot of question marks around his valuation.

Didn't mean to offend no one loll
I see him as an all rounder
Average at everything? As he doesn't have one single stand out feature to me. Which would alright if he was "good" at everything, but he's clearly not.

There's no way there's 15 better centre backs than Smalling.
This criminal underrating of our players does get silly.

I'd have thought so, but I get the feeling the guy means those really slow old Italian masters.
no I meant I never really thought of Ferdinand as pacey player in the same way you think of people like Vardy and Michael Owen for example

If Blind was as dominant and strong as Maguire he’d still be here.
When enough years go by people forget everything don't they.

I've seen people suggesting bringing Evans back would be a good idea, despite him putting in arguably the worst season for any centre back here in 20 years. He even managed to get himself a long ban for spitting didn't he, just to top it off!

If you don't think Ferdinand was a very quick defender, I can see why you don't think any defender ever was quick! He didn't get beaten for pace in his peak days.

Physical speed on its own means nothing.
I remember Silvestre...he was fast as anyone but at times, it seemed that his brain freezes for a couple of seconds before reacting.

I'm not saying he wasn't quick, just that people are talking about pace like if you aren't the fastest on the pitch you're done for, Rio was no doubt quick but I'm sure that the players I mentioned and others that don't spring to mind were a lot quicker in terms of out and out pace VVD isn't the fastest, but isn't slow either, but is rarely beaten for pace, as like Rio he uses his brain to position him self better than most around to negate any difference in outright speed.

Yep, of course.
But if a defender is on the slower side, which Maguire certainly is, he has to have terrific one on one skills, and positioning, like Steve Bruce did back in the day. Also helps to have a lot of pace around him, which Wan Bissaka would certainly help, as would having a Smalling in there too.

Aye! Think it’s more likely Smalling, Tuanzebe or Bailly would partner him of he came here.

The transfer cost matters because the club only has so much money, and anything we spend on a player necessarily means there is less to spend on another player.

It’s an opportunity cost basically.

Maguire isn't on the slower side, he has average pace at worst, his build makes him look slow so lazy pundits jump on that and repeat it so much that people that don't watch Maguire every week believe it

Which centre backs in the premier league are slower out of interest?

World class defenders generally have very good pace. Rio was one of the fastest players around the pitch, and in his early years, made up a lot of his mistakes by out pacing his opponents. Just highlighting, although - I do think that Maguire is needed now, and should be a good buy.

Are there no other centrebacks around? He's not really that good. Not 80m good anyway.
