I think it's better the opposite way. Let a manager prove himself with (relatively) little, then you back him with more steadily until you have 100% faith in him in the transfer market. Then he can have any funds he wants.
I agree with you, but I believe that this is where it's a bit unfair to OGS. He isn't really involved in negotiating transfers, and can't be expected to know about all the options on the market, and what a specific player might cost until serious negotiations take place.

This is where a real scouting network comes in handy. They need to be able to find good players (perhaps like konate) who fit what OGS wants without costing world record fees. He can't be expected to do that and coach the players.

He's regarded as one of the best CBs in a major European League at 20. He marshalled a defence that conceded the least amount of goals in said league and also completely nullified Lewandowski when RB Leipzig played Bayern which ended goalless.

He plays in a team that likes to press high and is accustomed to playing in a high line. Defends space behind him expertly due to him being lightening quick. He's already showing a very high level now in one of the best leagues in Europe.
Yeah but he isn't "premier league proven" so therefore he must be bad and not worth signing.

No but we can't have a team filled with 19-21 year olds. It isn't unlikely that we could start a match this season without a single outfield player born Before 1993 (DDG, Shaw, VNL, Tuanzebe, AWB - McTominay, Andreas, Pogba - Martial, Greenwood and Rashford) and an average age of .. 23 ?
We need someone who is a leader and experienced at the back. You can't expect a 20 year old regardless of his qualities to become the undisputed leader at the back.

I am all for signing talents - but in that central defensive position...I want a fairly experienced leader.

Stop fishing, not in any world would this be the case.

Leicester is not here to fix your mistakes in the transfer market.
Nonsense. He’s a good defender and a club like Leicester is his level. Same as Jonny Evans.

Phil Jones is definitely good enough for Leicester or any top 10 team. He is a decent-good defender. Only problem is fitness.

They're clearly taking the piss, noone thinks Leicester would take Jones, noone on this forum has a hand in United's transfer dealings so there's noone who can "fish" for feck sake.

Some of them seem to think Ed Woodward and Uniteds entire negotiating team are members on here and very active in this thread, judging by the nonsense they keep posting.

Don`t dispute he is good enough, its his injury record that is of more concern - same cannot be said for Jonny, so that is not really a great comparison.

I think this is an excellent shout. Ake has improved every season. Maguire is stalling and we don't have time. Ake is 24 and will get better. Ake, Tuanzebe and Lindelof is a promising trio of CB's.

New title time:
BOOM!
Harry misses Training.
I have doubts about Maguire. If we sign him for 80m. How much do Utd actually improve? - We'll still have Matic protecting him, losing runners, looking like he's got a piano on his back. Yes our defence is poor and we need a CB but I don't see Utd spending 80+ on Maguire and then investing in other areas with 10 days left. Maguire will improve the defence but he won't improve Utd substantially unless we we make improvements in CM and DM.

Sky trying to get people betting on Sky Bet, he misses training haha who gives a shit, probably ill!

We seriously linked with Ake, didn't Bournemouth concede a shedload last year and he was a main fixture in that defence, if we can't do better than Ake then we are in the shit!

You don't know he's ill though do you, you're guessing and putting two and two together, just like Sky.

Ake doesn't excite me at all. He's potential, but Maguire is more ready to come in and do the job.
Yeah, he also isn't anywhere near as good in the air, which is a large reason we're getting Maguire.

Gloom and Doom 101

I don't think Matic will be the most prominent defensive midfielder this season, McT will turn that role into his own, I may be wrong but that's the way I see it happening.

A back 4 of AWB - Lindelof - Maguire - Shaw looks pretty good to me and I don't think the £80m for him will diminish the chance of other signings. If this comes off it will display some semblance of a plan on Ole's part and some real weaknesses bolstered and improved.

Maguire will improve the defence but he won't improve Utd substantially unless we we make improvements in CM and DM.
If he improves our defence he improves Utd. Don't see how you can have one without the other.

Yeah, and Lukaku was injured. Its standard to say a player is injured/sick before a transfer just in case the deals falls through for whatever reason.

United Stand last night said there would be news on Maguire today. Not verbatim but medical Tuesday unveiled Wednesday.
