I believe that the emergence of this lad on pre season, even though he didn't get many minutes, maybe the reason that we won't sign Bruno. Out of all the academy lads, he's the one, to me, that looks ready to slot straight in. Don't think he will get many starts in the Prem for the first few months of the season, but will be, by the season's end, be getting plenty of starts.

If he doesn't play this season he will leave as he only has 1 year left on his deal. Perfect time to renew wheelchair Mata then.

We need more natural footballers in the team. Angel Gomes, Lindeleof, Maguire, Fred, Greenwood etc is what we should be striving for and would retain the ball a lot better and passing stats thru the roof but we need a strong manager to weed out below average players.
Matic, martial, James, Perreira Shaw mata aren’t first team players.
Good one mate. Have we been watching the same team play last season?
I for once haven't watched James play at all, yet you're labeling him average. You must have followed Swansea quite close, unlike United, since you think Shaw is average.
Anyhow, let's not derail the thread.
It's Gomes we should be talking.

I reckon we will lose him for free because he will get 0 starts and no minutes.

I think he's very talented but perhaps needs a different club to make a step up. He's going to be buried behind Lingard and Mata unless they are both injured.

It’s still too soon to be starting him but I think he’ll get minutes off the bench and the club will be telling him they love him and see him as a regular. Whether it all comes together over the next few years for him is the big question. I think he’s really talented but it’s just unfortunate the contract is up at the end of this season. I do think he’ll sign. The club won’t mess it up again.

Which is a disgrace in itself. Both have nowjere near his natural talent.

“Natural talent” means feck all. I’m sure people were creaming themselves about Mata’s “natural talent” when he was Gomes’ age but he hadn’t yet played a single minute of first team football.
Lemme explain better. I think the two older players have peaked or past their peak. And both aren't players that will push tge club in terms of quality. Imo, it is better to take the gamble on a young player but has the talent to surpass them. Even if those two.might be better players at the moment.

At this point all we can hope is that Ole uses the EL to rotate his squad rather than take it super seriously like Mourinho did. It's very unlikely (and arguably daft) to thrown Gomes straight into the first XI in the PL so I think the cup games is the best chance he has to make an impression

Ok, right. I’m definitely hopeful this will be the season in which he passes them both out in the first team pecking order. I’m just a bit jaded with comments implying this has already happened based on a few sub appearances against second string opposition players in pre-season friendlies.

Agreed. I’m also hoping he can get on the bench for PL games. He might not be ready to start but he’s a good option to have as a sub.

Just finished watching the U21s vs. Rotherham. Looked a cut above everyone else on the pitch.

I'm sure as someone who doesn't see much of the youth teams, I'm very late on the bandwagon here... but between the close control, ability to change direction in a flash, the resilience to shrug off being shithoused by players twice his size, and most importantly, just seeming mentally half a step ahead of everyone else on the pitch and seeing things to try that others don't... I'll go full muppet and say I'm getting very strong Hazard vibes.

Just seems to have that knack to pick something out that originally might seem speculative, but ends up looking like the right decision after the fact 9/10 times.

Correct.

Anyone worried about him physically need not.

He's a unique talent. That much should be blatantly obvious regardless of the opposition. His touch and mastery of the football is exceptional and he seems to just see the game better anyone around him. He's exactly the kind of player the first team has been missing. Should be only a matter of time before he starts to get regular chances.

When Mata was arguably the best player in the league a few years back, I’d argue Angel has a lot to prove before he gets anywhere near that level of natural talent.

Is it just me or does it look like he has improved quite a bit already since last season. Obviously there will still be inconstancies at some point due to his age but he seems to be in great form at the moment. When he is like this he can play football at any level.

Are you the ref?
I guess like many who watched Gomes last season, I thought that he looks great but is far too small/slight to get anywhere near the first team.

Now, having watched him in pre-season and in that game against a pretty physical Rotherham team, there is no doubt that he does deserve a chance in the first team.

He totally bamboozles defenders and, when they do get near him, he is able to ride/shrug off challenges far better than you could ever expect him to.

Bring him on.

I'm pleased that the lads won tonight, against mostly physically stronger and bigger players. Angel Gomes is starting to show that he is actually able to cope with the physicality of senior football, aligned with the obvious abilities that he has. As I've said previously, I think he will be pretty much making the no10 spot his own by the end of the season, think Mata will possibly start the season in that position. Wouldn't be surprised to see Angel on the bench for Sunday's game.

Absolutely, and a much enhanced 5 year contract should be put in place for him. Hope Ole, or some of the coaching staff, were there tonight.

I think so, maybe it's just that he's finally adapting to the men's game? He's a lot more decisive than he used to be, he's constantly getting on the ball which is important.

My big fear for this season is that we will keep giving chances to under performing senior players, in a hope that they'll come good, rather than giving Gomes and Greenwood the minutes.

Given our front four will be Rashford, Martial, Lingard and a new AM, it could be hard for them to start games, but I hope they can pull ahead of the back-ups in Sanchez, Mata, Pereira + Lukaku/his replacement.
