Hopefully Pogba follows soon, that'd be a fantastic statement of their belief in the clubs direction, which will hopefully improve the atmosphere around the club and amongst the fan base.

We need to be United and pulling in the same direction to get back to where we want.
With this 400k/wk, i’m afraid they believe more on their paycheck.

Regarding how long he's been out of form for........

For those nerds who like xG stats and whatnot, these are De Gea's "xG Prevented" stats over the last few years:

19/20 (so far) - +0.60
18/19 - -3.00
17/18 - +6.70

So in season by season terms, it's pretty clear that there was a massive deterioration last season. However, if we split his generally outstanding 17/18 season in half we see a +8.50 vs -1.90 split. So saying he has been off his game for roughly a season and a half is about fair.

Though to put that in context, he still finished the 17/18 season with by far the best stats of any PL goalkeeper (the second best finishing on +3.90), largely down to his inhumanly brilliant start to the season. Whereas in 18/19...... Well, let's just say he was troubling the other end of the table.

For what it's worth, he has been 4th best in the league so far this year, albeit on a small sample size of games.

For another 18 months then he'll spend the following 18 months being shit again until his new, new contract is resolved.
He’s been shit for 18 months? We’re all discussing David De Gea, Manchester United goalkeeper. Who are you talking about?

Why are people so sassy when it comes to the assessment that De Gea has been poor for club and country since June 2018?

It reminds me of when people would defend Rooney over his own form (which was worse for longer).

Hopefully De Gea does get back to his best. But he has been a weakness. That is a fact. We can’t be sentimental. We need him to settle down and do what he does best, which is saving shots.

Feet up at home.
Come on guys he will settle again now it's sorted. He's been awesome for the last few years and had his head turned but now he will give us some much needed stability now he's committed

Good news.
Bit of a gamble given last 12 months form but worth it.
Im sure the last 12 months iffy form meant his options weren’t so great either, but he could easily of ran his contract down and earned similar on a free somewhere sunny, so its a vote of confidence and headache avoided.
I could of seen next summer being a long goalie replacement saga where we then miss out on other targets.
Romero to move on?

Great news.
It comes at a cost, but then we were never going to get another decent keeper from market, without throwing hell lot of money, with that fool at the helm of affairs.

Another contract that s going to raise the expectations of every player we negotiate with. We are gonna pay our way into a very tight spot at this rate.

Imagine being unhappy that one of our better players extended the contract rather than left for free... :houllier:

It already is high. No one who has a decent name in market wants to join us, unless for a big transfer amount + salary.

He did try to squeeze the max out of United with agent. The salary seems to be base pay plus
performance based.but the agent was negotiating 1 mil per month after tax according to some sources.

This contract is more a reward for him being really amazing for several seasons on the trot, not necessarily his current and recent form (although this seems to have settled him as seen by the LCFC game). I don't think any goalkeeper is worth the money discussed, let alone one with obvious weaknesses on the ball like DdG (his passing from LvG seems to have disappeared).

Having said that, we won't be able to attract anyone of his class in this position if we had to buy on the open market. That and the fact we've been penny-pinching with late renewal of contracts (see Herrera) means we deserve to be squeezed by him and his agent, especially the stupid money we paid to Sanchez.

Imagine being unhappy that one of our better players extended the contract rather than left for free... :houllier:
What was your honest opinion at the time we signed Sanchez? Was it something along the lines of 'imagine being unhappy that we signed one of the best players in the PL for free... :houllier:'?

Great post! Statistics are not all but in this case it just reinforces the obvious for anyone that watched us at the end of last season, where if he was really on his game, we might have made the top 4 (it was still the attack's fault but DdG used to pull us out of these situations).

Excellent news!
I'm not sure he's worth 750k per week but those are the times I guess.

I remember every great keeper in history going through a dodgy period where people think they're finished. Even Schmeichel had one at United. More often than not, the top one come back even better than before.

Great news.

This is obviously good news. If hopefully he gets back to 2014-17 form then we've done great business and plugged one hole in our team. If his form continues to falter, we'll take a hit on the balance sheet and let him go for cheap (aka Lukaku, Sanchez).

Anyways, even the worst alternative is better than him walking away on a free and us having to devote time and resources to getting a goalkeeper next summer.

I like his statement too. He genuinely doesn't have to stay here, he could go anywhere he wants, but he's chosen United so he must believe we have a chance with the work that Ole is doing.

First it was the last few months of last season he was poor.

Then it was a year.

Then someone said it has actually been 18 months

Now i'm reading that he's been poor for two years!
While the truth is that he’s made a handful of uncharacteristic mistakes in the last 6 months and nothing beyond that.

950k a week, glad we kept it under a cool million a week. I've no idea how much his wages are.

Good news. It should not have run on this long and he should have either been extended or sold in the summer. However, this is far more preferable than him running his contract down, leaving for free and us relying on our board freeing up a big chunk of cash and having to identify and persuade a competent replacement to join.

Recency bias means it's easy to focus more on his recent awful form and forget that he was insanely good and consistent for 6 of the last 7 seasons. Now the distraction of the contract is out of the way, it's up to him to regain his crown as the best keeper in the league.

Part of me wishes we'd been proactive and replaced him and Pogba, selling both with their stock relatively high and building towards the next great side. The fact that a club the size of United ended the PL transfer window with the future of our two best players who both openly want to leave totally up in the air is comical.

Still, we now know that both of them will be here for the next few months at least. Time for them to buckle down, be huge influences on and off the field and prove they are worthy of their status as the highest paid players in the country with world class performances.

Nop, I was one of the very few who said that the deal made absolutely no sense as we were stacked in LW.

The moment where my hopes peaked last season.

Also, for people saying he was shite last season, he produced this in the group stages that helped us finish second place.

For people in the UK

It amazes me that people criticise this guy, yet continue to defend the likes of Rashford and JLingz. It's mind boggling :houllier:

Fair enough but do you not think we're overpaying and risking a Sanchez v2? I know he's unlikely to decline as much but the increased salary expectations won't help us with recruitment.

Hopefully that is the case as it would be a massive thing not to have to worry about but already this season we've had Lindelof questioned and Shaw's dodgy fitness has returned :nervous:

But yes if we can go a summer or two without having to make any signings in defence and concentrate elsewhere it would be great
Even with a settled, top notch defence you'll still have players being questioned. Jaap Stams turning circle for instance. Players can still have poor form as well or make mistakes.

Indeed the whole 'he's been shit for 18 months' can honestly go and play in traffic. There's a difference between making a handful of mistakes and being shit for 18 months. Even during his worst season at the club the guy still produced moments of sheer WC brilliance

Fantastic news.

There is no 'keeper in the world I'd back more to pull of a game winning save than De Gea.
