I thought he was deliberately cautious the other night. He's not been given too many opportunities so far and playing riskily wouldn't have done him any favours with regards to future chances. I reckon he'll play closer to his ability level if he gets a few more chances and feels he has the confidence of the management. Hopefully he starts tomorrow against West Ham.
He played safe which is understandable. He's a far more creative player that what he showed on Thursday. He needs games and will get better.
Don't think he will play tomorrow.

Agree. Shame about tomorrow but I suppose with Lingard and Mata being available, and us needing to keep picking up points, you're probably right and he's unlikely to start. Hopefully he gets at least some time in the second though.

Ole won’t risk playing him tomorrow as we are up against it due to our shocking away form.

I think he would show up more with the better players around him.

Really convinced Gomes has star quality we haven't had in a young player for a while.
Do you think the arrival of Madison (hypothetical ofc) would be detrimental to Gomes development. I worry they play in essentially the same position - CM but a strong preference/suiting to the attacking central #10 position.

I like Madison but feel Gomes' ceiling is just so much higher

We'll see how this season unfolds, I reckon Gomes has it in him to nail down a spot in the first team before the end of the season. If that comes to pass, then we needn't spend 100 odd million on Madison, who probably won't be as good as Gomes in the long run anyway.

Brilliant.

I get the part of not coming deep to get the ball but that's why more experienced players and the coaching crew are there for - to guide him. I wouldn't give him a low mark on work rate because that wouldn't have made Chong and Rashford play better. Place quality players around him and whatch him explode. As many have noted, how many times did he move into pockets of space but no one - especially the midfield duo of Matic and Fred - was able to see and pass the ball to him. Hopefully we get Pogba, Martial and James to connect with him. I wouldn't mind throwing Garner in, he is one person who is sure to feed a more advanced Gomes with quality ball. In my opinion, he shouldn't be made a deep lying midfielder at this top level yet, that would be too much pressure on him. Unfortunately we don't have one with good quality in the team (I don't count Pogba as one). Oh we do, but he is still too young :)
Oh I’m not questioning his workrate I’m just saying both parts are crucial to his development. But that those glimpses of talent are the most important because it’s talent that wins the biggest prizes, workrate goes with it mind.

He's got a great first touch and turn which i think is key if he's going to play in the hole. He won us no end of free kicks with little bits of skill and turns.

He totally died just after half time though, i'm not sure someone of his size and age playing against men quite has the fitness to last 90 minutes at the moment he couldn't even take corners after a while but i though he was positive.

Its always going to be hard for a young lad to come in and perform when he's got players defending for their lives against him but also has Matic recycling the ball from left to right rather than trusting him and passing the ball into the middle for him to work with.

He can play any position in midfield except the purely defensive role. He can be a DLP, a Scholes-like 8, and a 10. Buying Maddison should not restrict him in the slightest. In fact, I'd argue that his best fit is at 8 rather than 10, and longer term, the DLP role could be his.

You see City with their abundance of talent in midfield and up front, there's no reason why we can't have similar depth if we were to buy Maddison.

Why do some posters continue with the outmuscled narrative? What evidence is there of that?

Yeah, he literally got outmuscled once yesterday. People are seeing whatever suits their agenda.
Agenda?

There is not one person on this board (who supports United) that doesn't want him to be a superstar.

The reality he played against a team of League 1 standard, didn't overly standout, and completely gassed at half time.

If people think he's currently ready to start first team games against Premier League opposition, they need their head examining. Luckily, our management team aren't amongst them.

If you look at the comment I was replying to, I was simply pointing out that he had no problem with the physical aspect of the men's game. I don't think he should be in the first XI, but some people are saying he was easily outmuscled, which certainly is not true.

Well, personally I don't recall him ever outmuscling another player, but the fact he couldn't get past half time certainly suggests he is far from being physically up to it considering the pace and physicality of that game (which was played at a pedestrian pace with us having all the ball and doing no pressing) compared to your average Premier League game.

The reality is many people on here built him up to be some kind of saviour, despite never having seen him kick a competitive ball. It seem to me that it's those people are having a hard time accepting he is far from ready, as it wouldn't suit their "Solksjear is an idiot and doesn't know what he's doing" agenda.

I think his handling of the young players has been spot on, regardless of what people think of him as a manager.

He shouldn't necessarily be starting but he does deserve getting minutes from the bench, based on the constantly shit performances from Lingard and Mata.
That's my opinion at least.

In that respect, I think Ole is quite good. IIRC he developed quite a few good talents in Molde, so hopefully he can do similar for us.

So you're saying he was regularly outmuscled?

When did I say that? Who are you, Cathy Newman?

I don't recall him being in a situation where he had to be outmuscled nor outmuscle another player. He generally gave it as soon as he got it, and rarely took more than a couple of touches before releasing the ball.

Him not lasting much after half time has more to do with the lack of minutes he got in preseason and since the season has started.

He shouldn't even be expected to perform at his peak until he is fully fit either. His lack of minutes in preseason were just not a good thing.

Hopefully he plays every week now due to Europa League and he can build his fitness

I think we expect too much from Gomes and Chong they are only 19-year-olds, they should only be coming on for the last 10 or 20 mins when we are cruising in a game. Or sent out on loan for a season to a championship side that
plays football.

Shame your opinion is so important to you that you feel the need to jump on the performance of a 19 year old kid making his debut.

Then you pretty much agreed with the outmuscled content of Revan, which is contradicted by your original response to him

Do you remember Cristiano at 19? Or Messi at 19? Or, more recently, do you realize how old is Jadon Sancho?

I agree on Chong, but with Gomes I think we should be looking to increase his first team minutes and develop him in our squad this season. Sub appearances in the league and starts in cups

Nope. The two don't necessarrily go hand in hand. I don't expect too much from them, but do believe they will get better once given chances. I don't see why the only two alternatives are twenty minutes when are cruising (this will do feck all for their development and since when do we ever cruise?), and going on loan. What happened to giving youth a chance AND being patient /not having over the top expectations?

You agree with Revan that he wasn't really outmuscled much in the game.
I said he was never in a situation to be outmuscled (although the one time he was, he was outmuscled) as he generally released the ball after a touch or two.

I personally suspect given his age, stature, build and the fact that he gassed at half time in a very easy game for us that he would be eaten alive if he were starting Premier League games. However, that's not to say he won't go on to be a very good player.

But at the moment, certainly not ready.

What world are you living in? You're seriously comparing Gomes & Chong too maybe 2 of the best players the world has ever seen?

Sancho is currently on a different level to Gomes & Chong, that's why he'd cost close to £100m to buy if Gomes or Chong where even close to him we wouldn't be linked to Sancho.

Thought he did well when he came on. Actually played on the half turn and moved it a bit quicker. Not that it was anything amazing. Just basic shite.

A couple of nice forward passes from him when he came on. That's how far our standards have dropped when we are praising for as little as that
