I’d assume a £100m World Cup winner in his prime could stand out half fit against Rochdale reserves. He didn’t, some of their players looked better if you didn’t know who he was.
Half fit? No. But considering that he was starting and just wasn't entirely match fit, I would also assume similarly to you – I did expect him to have a better game than he did. But personally, I would give him a bit of leeway considering how he's returning from injury and thought he did show some encouraging signs as well – the run he made for the missed header, the half-chance for Greenwood that came after his dribble etc. Also, it doesn't work linearly like that always either, does it? A class player can have a poor game against a poor opposition.

Again, for me, this was a good game to give him some playing time without too much pressure, hope he's alright and now I expect a much more influential performance against Arsenal on Monday if he plays.

Wanted to post this earlier, but couldn't, as my 3 posts for the day were up. It didn't reset after 12am UK time though. Dunno why.

@fergiesarmy1 From your posts, it seems to me like you've decided to find blame with Pogba no matter what.

I’m shocked, shocked I say
Are you saying he's to be blamed for not having recovered completely from the ankle injury?

Doesn’t get the captains armband again Rochdale (Ole said Axel didn’t get it because he grew up in Rochdale)
Plays like crap again after another few weeks out
Doesn’t go on a team bonding session

Clearly gonna stay
You mention his not getting the armband here, and he wasn't the only player to not have gone to the dinner (Young, Romero, Maguire all missed it) – yet you state these two incidents as if they're indicative of his lack of desire to stay here. He may not end up staying – but such stuff really need not be indicators of his lack of desire to stay, at least we don't know that they are. And you turn a blind eye towards anything positive about said about him.

I’d be more impressed if he showed up on a pitch now and again, last goal from open play for club or country was middle of February (not far of our Jesse’s record who gets called out daily for that) but apparently that doesn’t matter to pogba fans as he’s a non defending defensive midfielder now or something.
You simply shift the goalposts to bring it back to his performance when somebody replied supporting a post about your selective reading, and telling that he's been to the recent U18 United match – no acknowledgement of the point made whatsoever.

Try not to bend everything you read so that it fits your narrative.

Stupid to play him in that game, especially for 90 minutes (but obviously once he'd started he could hardly be taken off when we were in need of a goal)

Ole getting a lot wrong at the moment :nervous:

In 10-15 years from now, when we look back on Paul Pogba, he will be talked about as one of the most overrated players of his generation. Had the talent, but did not have, and never would have, the consistency and workrate that could have transformed his legacy.

But by then he'll have £200million in the bank, and he won't give two hoots.

Pogba is a beacon of everything that is wrong with football today, and I have been watching United for over 30+ years, and going to OT every week for nearly half that time.

Overrated is an understatement, and the excuses given for such continuous lackluster performances by fans is staggering to say the least.

  1. "The players around him are too poor for him to perform"
  2. "He only plays well when he has quality players"
  3. "He doesn't care enough about these games to play his best"
  4. "He missed an open net because he doesn't care"
  5. "He loses the ball so much because nobody else is making the runs he needs them to"

The fact is, watching that game against Rochdale, back from injury or not, he didn't even look good enough to get into their team.

Embarrassing by some fans - especially on here.

I'd let Pogba go before Wan-Bissaka, and James any day of the week. Players who appreciate the opportunity they have been given - and play for the badge.

Don't forget, even as a kid Pogba was moaning and complaining that he wasn't being played, thinking he was better than the established options we already had; he has always overrated his own ability, and then failed to match up to his own hype on the pitch time, and time again.

Fans then started watching show-reels of his best bits at Juve and thought he had become some type of messiah that we just had to attain; when the reality is, he has always been a show pony. Not a single big team put a serious bid in for him in the summer, because for all the bluster, there is not that much interest unless they can get him for peanuts.

It's time to wake up, and understand that if we are going to rediscover any of the glory, form, and consistency we have shown/achieved over the last 20 years (not the last 7) we need to seek out players who are not up their own backsides, have a work ethic, and actually want to be known for the qualities we have always attracted, and expected - and that made us the team we once were.

At present we are probably a top 10 team at best; no better than Everton, and no better than the Leicester type of teams. If we wish to change that, then we need to change the mentality of what we are prepared to accept, or in another 7 years we will be in exactly the same position - or worse.

Have a good day.

Ole getting a lot wrong at the moment :nervous:
Why? We needed to win like you say and that was no time to introduce Garner considering how the game was going. That we needed to keep him on shows how poor our squad depth is. I think he will play anyway.

Being unavailable so often isn’t a good thing.
He was deemed unfit before the match, but he read Redcafe and saw Fergiesarmy1 criticising him, so he tried to play on and help the team :( unfortunately his injury has come back.

At least you'll be happy he's not back in the team! i'm sure Matic or Pereira will get our strikers the chances we require :)

If the objective was just to give Pogba minutes then he shouldn't have started, yes it's easy saying that in hindsight because I'm sure Ole's aim was to give him 60 minutes and sub him when we were a few goals to the good but the game didn't go that way did it. Now he's going to potentially miss a much bigger game

I think that getting through was more important then potentially aggravating an injury. It's a primary competition to give the youth game time and possibly the most realistic chance for a trophy. Again, this only shows IMO the terrible depth of the squad in terms of quality but i don't think it was a mistake by Ole, rather a calculated risk.

It's a shame he's not as selfish and unhelpful as the others make out, perhaps if he was he wouldn't have rushed back from injury and made things worse. Clearly if his ankle has ballooned up like that after a match it wasn't fully ready.

Next time I hope he thinks more about himself and gets 100% healthy, a bit like Martial did.

In the game he got injured he made it worse by running like a mad man in to the box to make himself available for crosses. But no, he doesn't care to try hard and he's lazy

@ostentatious

I still remember him wanting to go home in his own car rather than get on the team coach last season so I’m hardly going to praise him for team spirit for going to an u18 game.

I am questioning his commitment with my post about the injury, rumours are there were arguments in the changing room about him not being captain for that game, has a stinker then says he has as a sore ankle and low and behold is doubtful for the next game

There's a hell of a lot Pogba does that others don't. Watching under 18s and under 23s. Attending sponsor events when other players don't. Always being the most available player for advice at Carrington. Watching the very young kids at Carrington. He went to Carrington in the summer to meet with Hannibal Mejbri and Harry Maguire. The talk around Carrington is that he's a very humble guy.

I find you to be extremely agenda driven. You'll completely ignore anything positive but rush to believe anything negative even if unsubstantiated hearsay

Yes, that's why he performed well at Juve and in the France set up?

Have you ever played a football match when you are the best on the pitch? you often tend to lose the ball alot more because you do not trust your team mates and try do more yourself to help the team.

Pogba is in a position now, where he has Lingard, Perreira, Rashford infront of him. Clearly when he is playing well, Maartial, Rashford all seem to get more chances in a game, I wonder why. There is more movement, players can receive and pass the ball well.

We are a top 10 team because the manager cannot get the best out of the players. Not because of Paul Pogba.

Sounds like De Gea is doing what he's been doing for the past 6 years, trying to keep this mess together. How dare those players not pitch.

Solskjaer's backing of Pogba (assuming he's not just putting a brave face on the situation...) could be the end of him.

It's clear he doesn't want to be here, why does he get a free pass when others have been given the boot?

Yes he's talented but the mentality isn't there - he should be dragging this team through games but he just plays like he would rather be anywhere else.

Disagree with everything you are saying but especially with the bolded part. Why should he? Why does he so much responsibility? He was signed here from Juventus, a part of a well rounded midfield three, players that complemented each other almost perfectly. Pirlo, the deep lying playmaker, Vidal, box to box with an engine to run for days. And then Paul Pogba, strong, technical long range passer with a good shot on him.

I don't think I've ever seen such demands put on the shoulders on a single midfielder. And the argument that he needs this and that around him to reach his full potential is a perfectly valid one. Because he just isn't the player you want him to be, honestly I don't think there is a single midfielder on this planet that could deliver what is being asked of Pogba at this club.

I think his best connection was with Zlatan. Their timing was just in sync. There hasn't been a player of that stature since. We don't have a right winger, his midfield partners are a past it Matic and a very ordinary McTominay. In front of him is Lingard, who just passes it back to where it came from. The forwards are young and have some way to go. It's safe to say his environment to perform is in tatters. The quality in this team is just so low. That usually doesn't make one single midfielder drag a team through games, creative midfielders usually need quality around them.

I am not saying build the team around Pogba, it's just wrong. Build a good team, and Pogba will perform as one of the team. The expectations on starting players at Manchester United players is so varied, most are just asked to do a job while he is asked to bring us the world.

The expectations are high because he’s spoken of in some circles as the best midfielder in the world but he’s only shown his top level in a handful of games in over three seasons.

How about he just plays not shite for a while? Is that too much to ask also?

I completely agree with you, but that's also why I think Pogba should go.

He's the "cherry on top" player that could help a very good team take the step to being a trophy winning team, but he is not the player around whom a team should be built. We need to settle the defence, wingers, the "Pirlo" and the "Vidal" before we need the Pogba. Until then, Pogba is a square peg in a round team and it's not working for any party.

Pogba isn't and has never been the best midfielder in the world, to keep judging him by a failed evaluation is quite astonishing.
