Bruno Fernandes | Signed

United have, even with the recent links to Bruno, continually seemed to prefer either Grealish or Maddison over the Portuguese International.
Even though either one of those Brits would likely be more expensive, that option still seems to be United's preference.

In my opinion ,United thought they could get Fernandes on a decent deal without ever going overboard largely due to Sporting's financial issues.
They thought Sporting were in little position to bargain.
That tactic seems to have been found wanting now due to United not knowing how to continue from here having been stumped by Sportings reluctance to sell their prized asset at a lower fee and ,obviously, who can blame them.

Do they back out of 2 weeks worth of dillydallying over a fee and receive the wrath of the United fanbase ?
Or do they back down and accept Sportings fee and thrash out a deal knowing that either one of their targets in the summer (Maddison,Grealish) seem unlikely from a financial perspective ?
Even more so if we,as somewhat expected, miss out on a CL spot.

The one positive thing today is that there are only nine days left of this whole ridiculous saga!

The reason why we don't simply "fork up" the money Sporting are asking is because we are going shopping again in the summer for Maddison, Sancho and Grealish, and the Bruno transfer will be used as a benchmark. Sancho will not be affected, but Grealish and Maddisons price guaranteed will be. The club is 1) trying to avoid setting a precedent where the selling club can set any price they will and we will simply pay it. 2) Avoiding setting a too high benchmark to start fee negotiations for the british players who will command a homegrown tax on top of their already hefty pricetag.

Sporting are looking out for number one more than they are the player at this stage, which they honestly can, but as long as the player has agreed terms this is starting to look like negotiations in bad faith.

All this time haggling over the deal is valuable time that could have been spent letting Bruno settle in and get ready for the tough season run in, if we just get it done sooner. Just silly management from the board with top 4 up for grabs and all the CL/sponsorship dosh that brings with it.

Yup and he will probably end up paying what they want or more if we inevitably end up with another injury in the next 3 games.

Obviously to a ‘fat bird’ he is
You realise it's an analogy about United buying British playing, right?

The club targets all types. But the only three that said 'yes' over the Summer were British. That doesn't mean that United aren't attractive to non-British players or that United don't want non-British players.

It was down to the non-British players that they said 'no'.

Both Sancho and Maddison will have and probably want the opportunity to play CL football next season, which we likely won't be able to offer even with Bruno, nevermind without him.

Yeah this could be true. I also think the deal is close. I think they are probably just apart on the clauses.

We are in desperate need of players, a good piece of business could secure us top 4. I honestly think that if we do no business, it's the first clear sign that Woodward has lost confidence in Ole and is lining up a replacement.

A scenario which highlights the incompetence in how the club is being run.
It could be that the glaziers don’t want to invest more as they are looking to sell?

I think your are giving our board too much credit, based on what smart clever strategy under Ed and Judge over the last 6 years can you believe that scenario to be remotely accurate.

Serious question, but do United actually have scouts? Surely we should have multiple targets lined up for every position and not just the obvious high priced names.

  What a dreamer. Not a hope Sancho ends up on this sinking ship.

It does strike me as head in the sand thinking that we'll be in with a shout for Sancho and Maddison without doing some shopping this window, our squad is somehow still 5th, but with our injury worries, going down the table looks fair more likely than going up. We're not getting these brilliant players with Europa League football and a side that really isn't exactly inspiring.

I'd imagine Fernandes is quite low down the list of targets, by all accounts we' much rather have Maddison or Grealish.

You need to get real, we aren't doing this, even if the will was there, then how attractive are we going to look if we bumble through the rest of the season as we are doing and finish 6th/7th?

City will fancy a bit of Sancho, Grealish will be in massive demand, and we'll just be taken for a ride by Leicester for Maddison, and with Euros I doubt we'll have enough time given the way we work, plus imo the money just isn't there. I could honestly see us revisiting Bruno all over again in the summer.

If we don't do this, it isn't some bad benchmark setting exercise, or that we know we are signing Maddiosn/Grealish in the summer, we just don't have the will to spend the money to improve things, and it will just more BS peddling to pull the wool over peoples eyes.

They only have one more game before the transfer window closes in total.

It increasingly feels as if Bruno screwed himself by signing a new contract at higher wages that sacrificed his leverage in the transfer market to control his own destiny. Interesting that Maddison has resisted doing the same for months now.

I'm officially putting cock back in for this transfer. I think that we can really see two sides that have dug in. Since they are so far apart they are unlikely to meet in the middle. I think Sporting feel they need to get as much as possible for Bruno due to their finances and maybe no other real big name to sell, so this is their crown jewel. They would rather gamble and not sell him now, to see if they can get top dollar from United or someone else in the summer. Think it's not gonna happen muppets.

There were numerous outlets being briefed in the summer that United had set-up a new information database that has all the bells and whistles when identifying individual players for a specific role. Its because of this new system that United went on and signed up Bissaka after going through numerous other options (I don't have the number but it was alot from what I remember).

I guess once a option/s has been set from the database United will then go on and proceed scouting the best placed individuals that fit the criteria they want.

That's the take I got from last summer.

..Or United could've just lied and are instead continually running through player profiles on Football Manager.

In general, Uniteds scouting network seemed solely based on the two Ferguon's final judgement on players,Martin and obviously Alex.

Also, when Moyes came onboard he was left utterly stunned that United were so far behind in this aspect of worldwide scouting compared to ,not only other major clubs but also ones with a minimal budget for a scouting network such as Moyes previous club Everton ,says it all really.

Yeah I’m sure that’s why he took the job, just to lie to the fans and cripple the club he loves. Makes perfect sense mate
Never mind. You bring this up, not me. We know why he took the job. Of course not for that. But I am sure that he will be „happy with what he has“.

Take a look in the transfer forum and see that we are linked with a lad from Birmingham.

With all due respect what you've written whilst it might sound logical in some way is obviously not based in any reality what so ever. Historic transfers should tell you that alone but I'll be interested to hear examples if you think there's any.

We aren't going to pay more than we're willing because of a previous transfer anymore than Villa are going to price us out of Grealish because of one. Neither are Leicester sitting thinking well we'll ask for 80million but if they don't get Bruno then we'll only ask for 60mil.

Obviously. It's a two way street.

United wanted non-British players. But the ones we targetted didn't want us back.

It's hard to believe when you're only targeting exotic unreachable birds when going overseas, but only fat birds when going local.

I never understand why fans think champions league is the be all and end all.

It might be a deal breaker in say city v United but it certainly isn't going to keep a player at Leicester over United as long as we pay the fee.
There's no way Maguire would have stayed just because of champions league.

Foreign players prioritise champions league football so it is important, if we aren’t offering it in the summer the championship and bottom half of the premiership is where we will be dining.

It is a game of chicken and likely there won't be a winner. We need quality (which Bruno might bring) and they need money fast but have nobody but him to sell for a high fee (if I`m not mistaken).

If I understood correctly, Sporting must raise the money by June. On the other hand, we (board) might be content with finishin outside of the top 4 for the greater good of buying properly in the Summer. It would seem that we are the only ones willing to bid for him, so this just might give us a slight edge in negotiations, which we are trying to use to full extent.

Thankfully, there is only one week left and we are bound to see some development, be it an unfavourable one (which for some people is signing him).

A few games in one cup or an extra 50-100k a week. I think your romanticism is misplaced.

Not just romance pal, I saw an Iwobi payslip the other day and his fa cup win bonus was £750, prem was £20k, not sure what his champion league bonus would have been because he weren’t getting any . Foreign players sure as shit aren’t coming for the magic of the fa cup that’s for damn sure.
