My girlfriend works for a travel company and Italy is one of their main destinations. That's sure to put people off of going there.
14 of them not far from me. The main guy pretty much did a tour of Italy before he was diagnosed so there is probably going to be some more.

Yeah, hardly surprising given the flakey effort toward preventing it - if you can really call it any effort at all - coupled with the purposeful disinformation from China trying to play down the spread / cases.
It makes me furious. As a parent of 2 kids, 1 of whom is a tiny baby, it really does make me absolutely furious.

Some pretty dire mismanagement in a number of places, they didn't quarantine those disembarking that Japanese cruise ship - just let them walk freely back onto the streets, then shock horror, a bunch of them got ill later.
I think there'll be an inevitable explosion of cases in the coming days, some of the affected countries just aren't managing it properly.

As a dad with a 2 kids myself I'm also worried. Kids return to school next week which is normally the time when all these illnesses get passed about.

I can't remember where I heard it but some medical professionals were saying (couple of weeks ago or so) that the next few weeks will be key, in terms of how this will play out, and it looks like it's spreading rapidly now. South Korea, Iran, Italy.
Good thing it doesn't seem to affect children, the mortality rate is lowest out of all age groups. Doesn't look too good for people with pre existing conditions though, hypertension, diabetes etc.

I'd listen to this guy. He breaks it all down very well. Mortality rate goes up with having pre existing conditions but only by a few percent, which is to be expected, really. Most will still be fine. I do worry for my granny though, she's got hypertension, heart problems and is over 70. Any information I got it was from his channel.

What is it I’m hearing this virus can be active for 38 days instead of suggested two weeks? Also few cases were people who were cleared managed to get reinfected? What the actual feck?

It was never going to be contained by the comments when it all came out, most leaders didn't care and still don't do. Just keep the panic low while feck all is done.
Just saw the scenes in Ukraine 
Just received official communication from my university directing students from the affected regions of Lombardy to not come in for lessons/exams for the foreseeable future, which is rather problematic as most faculties are in the middle of end semester exams. Wonder how long before there's a case in my city, considering it has one of the highest student populations across Lombardy.
I’m travelling to Vietnam with my sister next Saturday, I know Vietnam have only had 16 cases and seem so far to be containing it relatively well but I’m still a little worried. It’s a part work/part holiday trip so hard for me to cancel, especially considering my supervisor has just flown out there today.
Just enjoy it. Take regular hand washing precautions. All you can do really. Of the 16 confirmed cases in Vietnam, almost all of them have recovered so you can just see it as one or two cases if that helps put your mind at ease!
It doesn't seem like the Italian government is taking this seriously. Giuseppe Conte has said there's no need for scaremongering but there are dozens of cases in Italy now.
I think it's getting to the point where the world is going to have to go in lock down and ride this out until it disappears. This virus is simply evil in the way it spreads, once it affects hundreds and thousands resources will be stretched thin.
Plus masks aren't all that effective. Apparently they can enter through the membranes of your eyes. So you need to wash your hands, and not touch your face with your hands.
Most of the fatalities are folks over 60 with some chronic issues. Otherwise, most normally healthy people will recover.
Yep, I just found out that we received a couple of patients last night from Lodi and the entire hospital is on high alert but the city itself isn't really doing much. While there might not be a bed for scaremongering, there needs to be a proper plan in action.

Seems that way... Of course it could mutate into something with a higher mortality but as it stands I think 13000 people died of flu in the UK in 08/09 when there was a particularly bad strand going round so it may well end up being not even that serious - however I could see schools being closed the NHS being totally overwhelmed with people (leading to lack of care in other areas) and potentially economic carnage if they try to restrict movements like in China
Not sure what will happen but at the moment I fully expect it to be impossible to contain and just hope when I or family get it we are ok
The closest virus we have is MERS and I remember an interview on five live a few weeks ago with one of the women heading up one of the teams researching the vaccine for that virus ... She estimated a year to have a vaccine available and that was cutting times down to a minimum (testing approvals etc)
For something that so far only seems to kill in the region of 1 to 2 percent and for those to be people with pre existing conditions I honestly think the lockdown you have seen in China is going to be the biggest effort you see anywhere - firstly the government have the tools there to better enforce it and secondly I simply don't see most governments willing to risk the almost inevitable ressession if the cut international flights and internal travel.
If people's lives are put directly on the line to avoid recession, people should simply go on strike - and when the death-toll starts to rise in developed Western countries, and real people, beloved relatives close to home are dying and ill, that's what I think could well happen.
I'm not so sure to be honest... Most people who get it won't know of they got a normal flu or not... Most of those who get severely ill will have pre existing complications
50million died in the Spanish flu... But I don't think that caused mass strikes
Gut feel the advice will be to work from home where possible... Wash hands etc and carry on as normal
And anything else would probably overwhelm the NHS anyway ... Let's face it we are not building a new hospital in a week in the uk
Also if the year estimate is accurate then I'm not sure most people could afford to not work for a year and still eat etc
I'm not sure most companies could afford to pay people for a year if they were not at work
I'm absolutely sure the government in the UK couldn't set up a system that could feed / cloth people for a year with minimal economic activity in the country in a matter of weeks
Just being pragmatic and I think most people will carry on as normal with face masks and disinfectant sprays / wipes at hyper inflated prices

The reason it was called the Spanish flu, is because Spain was one of the few European countries not in the middle of WWI so reported about it. Everyone else, subdued any news to keep morale high in the war effort.
