I have 2 daughters aged 8 and 10, both of them love Greta and are genuinely inspired by her. It's not just her climate message, but the idea that a young woman still in her teens can make a such an impact and difference at an international level. The belief her stance puts into my daughters is something I could never have done as a parent, she's an excellent role model. Her message is great and much needed today and her example to other young women and girls is fantastic.

She'd make a pretty shitty dinner guest though!

That’s a HUGE number of people. That’s my point.
Your point seems to be that because some people don't like/are threatened by Greta we should demote her from her accidental position as an unofficial climate activist? or ignore her? Or try to find someone else? I know - there's a politician, smart, great environment credentials, well connected, with great geek cred, perfect for the older demographic... how about Al Gore?

Or how about we work with what we have? She's got an audience and a following. Seems a useful starting point.

Precisely. There's a real generational aspect to this and I think it's great. My kids are the same and I'm doing all I can to encourage it, because my generation needs to be pressured into doing more. I hope they don't lose this idealism and become too compromised as they get older, because frankly, the biggest burden is going to have to be carried by the next generation(s).

there are scientists who have been begging for attention on this issue. she has proven herself better than them at raising awareness.
Well, pioneering climate scientist Michael Mann did a pretty good job to be fair although even he ran into brick walls of climate denialism (despite his credentials, intelligence and savvy)... the same sort people the teenager Greta is being accused of being too hectoring/ignorant/autistic to be able to persuade, or something.

Comparable in that both were part of a great movement. The cause is not the issue here. MLK was seen as mostly divisive and generally negatively by huge parts of American society. The argument that their protests would be divisive, was made a thousand times.
Indeed, he was assassinated for his troubles. Despite being a world class orator, with huge public integrity, that's how persuasive he was to elements of the other side.

But those people didn’t understand that this was never about convincing anyone or getting a debate started. It was about equal rights. There is no compromising with such a topic.
And alike, there is no compromise when it comes to climate change. You either fight it, or you don’t. The time to convince anyone of the obvious truth is over. This is about putting pressure on those in charge and demanding the necessary actions may be taken.
Yep, some things do actually have to be fought for.

Fair play to her for not being fazed by it. Its mad that a kid is telling adults to grow the feck up and and do some good for the planet and they turn to ridicule her and stupid shite like this.

Not the first time criticism of her has taken unpleasantly sexualised tone.

Kind of odd to pick a weird cartoon out of some dark corner of the internet and label it as all men.

Anyway, her 15 minutes will be over soon. The world has more pressing problems to deal with now.

It's not the people creating the threatening stickers depicting sexual violence that I'm upset with. The person it's aimed at has been unnecessarily vague in her response.

Yeah, funnily enough I dont care what some kid says about a topic she knows nothing about, when the world is a few days away from a full blown virus pandemic.

A virus which for most people is about as deadly as flu compared to climate change which has already killed far far more than covid-19 and has dramatically changed the lives of millions of the worlds most vulnerable for the worse.

I think we should listen to the teenager.

In the first open country doing proper testing and therefore finding more of those with minor symptoms this is the current situation:

As the global death toll passed 3,000, South Korea said Monday it has confirmed 599 new cases, far higher than the daily tally reported in China. With 4,335 confirmed infections and 22 deaths, South Korea has the second-largest national caseload. However, it has tested more than 100,000 people, far more than have most nations.

That's 0.5% and roughly equivalent to flu. A new virus will seem high until proper testing gets under way as only the more serious cases are caught and minor cases don't.

Where do you draw the distinction between him doing ‘nothing at all’ and ‘more for humanity than Greta will do in her lifetime’ or whatever it was you said.

Are you referring to him being an inspiration to young cyclists or something?

And do you have any data to back up your claim that she’s appealing to the wrong demographic? You might be correct there.
Old response, but...

I never suggested that Lance Armstrong cured cancer. If that’s the line of judgement, we need to judge him against whether Thunberg has reversed Climate change.

Armstrong inspired hundreds of thousands (if not, but possibly millions) to start cycling and exercising. Many of those were unfit adults that would have been a drain on health services. He brought Nike to cycling. Nike making money brought adidas, and and and. His impact on how healthy millions of humans are... is almost without parallel.

Dreadful actions and very odd character, but he remains a net social good. Greta is a decade or more away from even coming close.

——

To your second point; Greta Thunberg is largely preaching to the converted. She’s not changing my parents mind. Or their friends. Or the whole boomer generation. These people WANT to do good. For the world. For their grand kids. But she’s not taking them along for the ride. She’s not mobilising a populace against government apathy. She’s criticising people for doing nothing. She’s not gaining support from the people that need to support regime change in government.

Given the platform she has, I should be able to ask a 20/30/40/50 year old at random and know what specific things she wants to do. The answer would probably be ‘She’s that climate change girl isn’t she?’.

Her cause is 100% supported by me. The methodology is flawed in every way.

Maybe in 36 months time I’ll look at her and think ‘What a prat I was’. But I just don’t see the right messages hitting the right people.

And Italy they have 2000 cases and 52 deaths, which is 2.5%. Its thought to be between 10 and 30 times more deadly than flu and twice as easily transmitted. It really isnt 'just like flu' and people need to lose that attitude and take it seriously before it properly takes hold.

@UnrelatedPsuedo given you ignored the question I’m going to assume you have no data and it’s just your assumption

I know you didn’t suggest he cured cancer - that’s the point, she is not trying to directly fix climate change either but she is contributing to raising awareness of the problem

shes been more effective than most, and through a collective effort the world is already changing

The funny thing is that when a long-term danger to humanity is brought to your consciousness by a girl and a youth movement with 99% backing from respectable scientists you and your ilk shrug it off and resort to attacking the person behind it instead of her message because, let's face it, you don't give a shit how the planet looks like in 100 years. But when short-term threat arises that might impact you a bit more directly it suddenly has your full attention.
It's ironic that old white men feel threatened by a young girl and claim she's only doing it for narcissistic attention-seeking but exhibit an egoism that is way beyond any self-interest she'll ever have.

I respect the danger of Covid-19; I fear for many older people and I worry for the economic impact especially on the poor in our society due to the shitty global economic system we live in. It is however very telling that conservatives and even centrists complain about Gretas emotional language and "scaremogering" despite her - again - being backed by the vast majority of the scientific community, yet with the Wuhan virus many of them suddenly outbid each other with their demands for drastic government action and draconian measures.

You're making the mistake of assuming that without Greta climate change is not a topic of discussion. It is, has been for years, and will be for long after shes faded away. I was studying climate science at University almost 20 years ago. The issue is not the message its the messenger.

The younger generation just seem to need to have a popularity figure to lead them. Why is that? A couple of years ago it was Jeremy Corbyn. Nobody really took him seriously either, and now it's Greta Thunberg. Next year it will be somebody else.

there's been a huge spike in investment in carbon offsetting in the last 18 months

clearly someone is taking notice of someone

it's obviously not all down to one person, but is there any one person who's done more to put the issue in the media in the last 18 months? I don't think there is

The issue is the message, because nobody wants to hear we have (as good as) blown our chance to keep warming to 1.5c. Which is what she has been saying. Our response is nowhere near equal to the challenge. Which is also what she had been saying.

it's so fecking weird to see grown men getting so annoyed by a 17 year old who is trying to be a positive role model for the single biggest issue of modern times.

The messenger could be Jesus fecking Christ himself and they'd just nail him to a tree a second time.

It is a power thing.
Grown men hate to be told that they are wrong by a young lady especially.

She filed a UN complaint against Germany, France, Turkey, Brazil and Argentina for "failing to uphold their obligations under the Convention on the Rights of the Child," alleging that "the petitioners’ rights to life, health, and culture have been violated."

Big polluters, no doubt, but a tad dramatic with the wording.

Well that is the name of the Convention to be fair to her.
