Surprised at this. Seemed like he was out the door. I guess he has had little ore game time recently hopefully he can push on and develop now that he can settle down. He hasn't shown enough in the first team yet but he was always impressive in the junior teams. Hopefully he can kick on.

Quite surprised he's signed, can't say I'm that excited about it to be honest. Never been impressed when I've seen him play.

Not shown me much yet, but got to trust those who work with him day in and out.

Hmmm letting him leave was the right move, he needs to bulk up massively to stand a chance with his frame on the wing. Also needs to sort out his hair, it looks like it affects his game quite a lot.
What? You sound like Mr Burns. Shave those side burns.

Pfft! "Billy Gilmour" is clearly a made up character from some comic book or video game.

In all seriousness, youngsters develop at different rates and some have a basic, linear line of development. Chong is not a prodigy, either, unlike "Billy Gilmour" seemingly is, who was literally made in a Chelsea lab to play football.

Gilmour seems like he's going to get to where he's going a hell of a lot quicker than someone like Chong, by the looks of things. Chong might take 18, maybe even 24 months to show anything, but then, he may skyrocket, such is the nature with some kids. If we're going to let youngsters go, we have to be 100% certain they can't cut it, and I personally wouldn't say Chong is a 'no hoper' or someone to write off even if I think he's some way from first team football at a club like Manchester United right now.

Personally, I'd get him a loan in England and let him get a better feel for the league without having all that anxiety he's currently got coupled into his game. He's better than he has shown, but there, he isn't nervous or flappy in the reserves.

good players stand out straight away almost all the time, or even offer flashes of brilliance at that age. Chong really hasn’t done anything of note during his time in the park in meaningful games. I expect his career to be similar to fosu mensah in the interim, but of course happy to be proved wrong

At 20, he needs to go out on loan, unless Mata leaves next season he will get even less chances with new additions to our first team squad.

Chong has been awful every time I have watched him. Hopefully this contract being given is so we can offload him in the summer.

Chong will not make it here. Feel free to quite me...

The boy obviously has some talent. I haven't been overly impressed with him to date, but it's far too early to write him off. Regardless of whether he ultimately develops into a genuine first team player is almost beside the point, though. Chong signing a new contract can only be a good thing. It's not like the club have given him an insane wage (by footballing standards). Convincing a young prospect to stay rather than leave on a free is good for the club. The club has spent a lot of time, effort and resources developing the boy. They obviously still see the potential in him. Losing players like Chong and Gomes (who may still leave, obviously) for nothing is bad for the club's status and image. Young players like that should leave because the club wants them to go, not because they see greener pastures elsewhere.

Good to see everyone prematurely writing him off like they did with Fred. Hopefully he proves everyone wrong.

I'm not arsed about long hair in the slightest, but it's not a best idea if you're a professional footballer especially at the length he has it coming down the sides. It blocks his peripheral vision when he's playing and he's always trying to get it out his face, I wouldn't be surprised if it slowed him down a bit as well.

Another over rated "future star" like Pereira, Macheda, Januzaj etc

I think the club are just protecting their investment by giving him a 2 year contract with an option to extend. They'll give him a shot at the first team, I'm pretty sure it wont lead to anything long term then eventually they'll cash in on a player who was going to leave for free.

Great bit of business

No where near ready. Wouldn't be sad if he had left tbh.
But definitely needs to be loaned for experience. I mean, if our squad depth allows us to....

I'm very much of the same opinion, a deal that only runs till summer 2022? Means a year loan next season following a likely transfer summer 2021 imo

Was excellent playing in our youth teams, has only made a handful of first team starts and is 20 years old. Give him a loan next season and see how he develops in 2-3 years time. Once he fills out physically, I think he will look immediately better.

Deal only until 2022 (year option) - probably benefit both us and the player
Looks like United have more or less guaranteed him chances in the first-team if he signs a short-term contract

Am I the only one that's quietly impressed with Chong?

I can't remember the match, think it was bruge or something but he started quite badly but it almost looked like he rolled his sleeves up and completely changed the way he was playing - stopped overdoing it and kept things simpler and suddenly began to really look like a player

Glad he's staying because it's hard to say if a player is gonna suddenly make a stride forward in their development

I think there's a good player in there trying to break out and extending with him is fine.

Massive improvement needed if he’s going to make it here. Always good to hang on to our youngsters, he obviously has the talent.

This is a "Show us what you can do" contract. The term essentially means that Chong himself prioritizes making it at Manchester United. He's likely been promised gametime or at least to be on the bench in some PL games, and gametimes in Europa/cups (unlikely with Europa if CL though). The short term means that the club is not 100% that Chong will develop into a long term contract player, and the term is also short enough for Chong to move on still a very young player if he does not develop like he wants.

This is a no risk venture, a complete nobrainer from the club.

Could do. He was a real slow burner wasn’t he
Yeah, another one who didn't break out till his mid 20's. The list is endless, i don't know why Chong is written off so confidently, he's clearly got talent, we see it in flashes already.

His path to the first team squad is blocked by better players than him with more to come in the summer. I think it’s both in his and the club’s interest that he moves on to somewhere where he gets more playtime. I’m just not sure Inter is the right club for him.

Inter has inter intense competition for spaces with the club using a mostly experienced players, with only a handful of young ones, as it attempts to launch an assault on the Scudetto. I reckon he’d be better off in mid-table, we’ll-run club in Germany.
Buy Sancho from Dortmund and offer to loan them Chong as (a small) part of the deal?

Not sure how I feel about this one. I was quite excited by the prospect of him playing in the first time initially but has been largely disappointing.

It does seem like he is desperate to impress and is forcing things when he gets a chance. Now that he has this deal signed I'm hopeful he might settle and play less erratically when he get's his chances.

If he can progress he could become a decent sub option from the bench against tiring teams next season, especially when we inevitable hit our annual injury crisis.

You've seen nothing so far really? He's hit the bar & been unlucky not to score a few times just his last few appearances. He assisted Fred vs Brugge also. You can see that once he grows into his frame and gets used to the increase in physicality, he'll be much better.

Fosu-Mensah has actually been extremely unlucky the past few years, first de Boer was sacked as soon as he joined Palace, then doing his knee cruciates at Fulham missing almost a year. He would have been much further along if things had gone differently for him.

I really haven't seen anything from him to suggest that he's worth keeping. Happy from to prove me wrong though.

Same should be said for Gomes, too.

Feel like this is a financial move. Keep him on the books, develop him and cash in on him in a few years. Has really flattered to deceive, I'm struggling to recall any fleeting moments of quality at all. One thing is showing the talent but not being physically ready. But at first team level he has looked deficient in both. Hope he proves me wrong, and forges a good career with us. But chances will be limited come next season if we act in the window, feel like he may have already missed the boat.

Guys he is 20.. Had a tough injury couple of years ago and is maturing. He is class on the U23's and he will get better. Looking forward to see his progression at Utd. Good news now to the Gomes thread.

I am happy with this, think he is decent and could provide some rotation option for us as we are short on numbers anyway.

Yeah, just hope we get Gomes done next, which I think will be done imo. He genuinely loves it here and has been here since he was a kid. Just give him the minutes that Lingard and Periera get, and I think he will sign easily.
