Reformist movements have very often had popular figureheads leading them. Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Harvey Milk, Nelson Mandela, Emmeline Pankhurst, etc. It is nothing to do with "the younger generation".The younger generation just seem to need to have a popularity figure to lead them. Why is that? A couple of years ago it was Jeremy Corbyn. Nobody really took him seriously either, and now it's Greta Thunberg. Next year it will be somebody else.
