The government's stance on schools is ludicrous. They've just announced their list of 'essential workers' and it's basically half of the population, meaning the kids of these workers can still go in school - with less staff to teach them and no noticeable extra financial support. They're basically asking teachers and TAs to act as nannys at this point, because parents can just say, 'Yes, I'm essential' and not have to have the kids at home with them! Total joke.
I think the idea is that once lockdown has been in place for a while and things seem to have peaked, then you can gradually lift measures a little bit at a time. If it seems stable, you can lift some more restricitons and if it starts to flare up again you can put them back. From personal experience here in Shanghai we can all go out and about freely again, you just need to have a paper slip from your local community, wear a mask and have your temperature checked when you are entering and leaving places. It's still not too ideal but nothing so bad that it should cause any major problems. Not to mention everyone is happy to do it and play their part in fighting the virus.

Unless it mutates and starts a second wave like Spanish Flu did.So last Wednesday my son was not feeling well and we thought he had some kind of stomach bug (came out both ends), which later just became a fever/cough. Then it his the missus with the same symptoms, just in the other order, cough/fever first, then stomach problems.
I on the other hand was fine, maybe some light headache and a bit low energy, but not too bad. Then yesterday it hit me full force and it feels like my lungs are on fire.
None of us has gotten the chance to get tested, but i am pretty sure we all have it now. Oh well. At least we wont have to worry about getting it later then

This seems to be one notable policy adopted by East Asian countries which has not been followed in Europe. I have my own thermometer at home but many don’t, I’d really like to see this implemented in Ireland.

With the supermarkets as they are, we've been using Just Eat deliveries every other day to try and avoid having to risk the crowds and make our stocks last longer. They have a no contact delivery thing, they just leave it at the door stand back and you just pick it up. Its been great to be honest.
I want to support local businesses anyway, they need it, so was thinking of going to the local fish and chip shop while they are still open. Don't know if that's a good idea or not. Chances are it won't be busy.

He also said the disinfecting surfaces is being overplayed, as in breathing is the primary source of transmission.

Yes, that's exactly what teachers are being asked to be. They are being asked to do their part. We have no shame in encouraging our staff to follow this guideline and keep having their kids cared for, so they can continue with jobs that keeps all this going.
In the same way that lots of other workers lost their jobs in recent weeks and are now supermarket shelf-stackers and checkout assistants, or delivery men, or warehouse pickers, and in the same way that specialist NHS doctors and nurses are now just doing the more general to try and keep people alive, teachers will also have to do something a bit different to play their part.
So many people over the age of 40 have it. I would say it is most difficult to not be old and not have it in life.
Loads of people have lung problems like Asthma as well.
I think it is really old people, like 70 plus that this virus is really effecting, although young people do get it and die.

It's not about doing your part, it's about a school that usually has 360 kids only having 80 kids in next week and, rather than bringing in a proportional number of staff and then rotating teaching staff as and when kids and teachers get ill, they're asking all teaching staff to come in, despite them not all being needed. Running the risk of making all of the teachers and TAs sick quicker doesn't make any sense in this situation. It's fecking stupid.
That sounds like a different situation to what your first post alluded to that. This sounds more like a problem with the school than the policy itself then, in the same way that some businesses are adapting admirably to this, whilst others are still looking for every excuse possible to drag as many workers into offices as they can.
The UK is hardly carrying out any tests, of course the death rate has been higher.
We're really upping them over the couple of weeks and that will be telling.

Yeah, this is a fairly recent development. The decisions about whose parents constituted an essential worker were made by asking 6 year olds what their parents did for a living, so was equally retarded. And rather than asking if both parents were essential workers, they just seem to be asking if one is, which is still totally skewing the results. They're a bit of a shambles in all honesty.
