Steady on Thanos.
So with all those positive stories that are going around of “Dolphins close to the shore in Italy” and “Deer seen walking quietly across Paris” etc, that scene from Endgame where Cap is talking to Black Widow post snap saying exactly the same thing immediately came to mind!

The government's stance on schools is ludicrous. They've just announced their list of 'essential workers' and it's basically half of the population, meaning the kids of these workers can still go in school - with less staff to teach them and no noticeable extra financial support. They're basically asking teachers and TAs to act as nannys at this point, because parents can just say, 'Yes, I'm essential' and not have to have the kids at home with them! Total joke.

Do government seriously think people are going to live like this for 12 months? They’re having a laugh if they think billions of people will accept it. I expect things to get ugly in about 6-10 weeks times. Riots, shopping lifting. We will become a nanny state over a virus which is killing the elderly and people with prior illnesses. Some people will think I’m being harsh but so far 10k people have died on a planet with nearly 8 billion people. Even if we got to a million people the numbers are relatively small given how dangerous this virus is being implied to be.
I think the idea is that once lockdown has been in place for a while and things seem to have peaked, then you can gradually lift measures a little bit at a time. If it seems stable, you can lift some more restricitons and if it starts to flare up again you can put them back. From personal experience here in Shanghai we can all go out and about freely again, you just need to have a paper slip from your local community, wear a mask and have your temperature checked when you are entering and leaving places. It's still not too ideal but nothing so bad that it should cause any major problems. Not to mention everyone is happy to do it and play their part in fighting the virus.

What would your solution be?

So last Wednesday my son was not feeling well and we thought he had some kind of stomach bug (came out both ends), which later just became a fever/cough. Then it his the missus with the same symptoms, just in the other order, cough/fever first, then stomach problems.

I on the other hand was fine, maybe some light headache and a bit low energy, but not too bad. Then yesterday it hit me full force and it feels like my lungs are on fire.

None of us has gotten the chance to get tested, but i am pretty sure we all have it now. Oh well. At least we wont have to worry about getting it later then :)
Unless it mutates and starts a second wave like Spanish Flu did.

have your temperature checked when you are entering and leaving places.
This seems to be one notable policy adopted by East Asian countries which has not been followed in Europe. I have my own thermometer at home but many don’t, I’d really like to see this implemented in Ireland.

When it comes to efficiency I raise my hats of to Singapore, the best in the world in terms of readiness.

But to be fair, it's easier to be efficient when you're rich and only have to deal with a city wide country with a 3 million inhabitants.

Your neighbour (my country) Indonesia can only cross their fingers and brace for impact.
Yes, it's easier to be efficient even you are small. But I think more importantly is the mindset. We have a mindset of vulnerability. Most of the bigger nations have a mindset of invulnerability.

Such a view is Eco-fascism, and pretty much one step away from eugenics. feck that.
Does it count as eugenics if I say that we're all the virus? I'm not trying to improve the human race by weeding out the 'worst', I'm saying we should all die because we're a terrible species and we are quite literally a virus. Agent Smith was right...

There's no evidence that we've improved the planet by existing whereas there's ample evidence we've ruined it.

Here's a question.

Has anyone been to fetch take out food?

With the supermarkets as they are, we've been using Just Eat deliveries every other day to try and avoid having to risk the crowds and make our stocks last longer. They have a no contact delivery thing, they just leave it at the door stand back and you just pick it up. Its been great to be honest.

I want to support local businesses anyway, they need it, so was thinking of going to the local fish and chip shop while they are still open. Don't know if that's a good idea or not. Chances are it won't be busy.

day 10 of isolation and I’m spiraling truth be told. Moved to this country ten months ago so don’t have a lot of close friends here, so already had a bit of loneliness kicking in.
I have ps4/Netflix/books/work from home. But I’m crumbling here. I won’t go out with friends and put others at risk - following the gov advice here, but I’m spiraling

Just in case there is anybody left who thinks this is still 'just a flu'. This hospital is just a few miles from me:

Just came to share this. That's a hard watch.

Look at the top response to this video when tweeted. Still some just trying to explain it away.

I am afraid that a take out would breathe on the food and then i would get it.

Would not dream of going into a place now. Michael Osterholm who is an infectious agents expert said all the data points to this virus being spread by breathing in air that is infected. He also said the disinfecting surfaces is being overplayed, as in breathing is the primary source of transmission.

I’m saying on mass people will eventually grow tired of the measures and frustration and anger will kick in. It’s highly likely to reach that point.
Some of the less bright ones have skipped the growing tired, frustration and anger phases and gone straight to the what-can-I-bring-my-nan-home-from-spring-break-mode:

At least in Europe you have a hope. What hope is there for people of Iran? The USA is refusing to ease sanctions and the British government has been trying to get USA to ease sanctions so Iranians can buy medical supplies. USA has refused so far.

Yes, that's exactly what teachers are being asked to be. They are being asked to do their part. We have no shame in encouraging our staff to follow this guideline and keep having their kids cared for, so they can continue with jobs that keeps all this going.

In the same way that lots of other workers lost their jobs in recent weeks and are now supermarket shelf-stackers and checkout assistants, or delivery men, or warehouse pickers, and in the same way that specialist NHS doctors and nurses are now just doing the more general to try and keep people alive, teachers will also have to do something a bit different to play their part.

I’ve got high blood pressure. In runs in my family everyone over the age of 40 has it.
So many people over the age of 40 have it. I would say it is most difficult to not be old and not have it in life.

Loads of people have lung problems like Asthma as well.

I think it is really old people, like 70 plus that this virus is really effecting, although young people do get it and die.

It's not about doing your part, it's about a school that usually has 360 kids only having 80 kids in next week and, rather than bringing in a proportional number of staff and then rotating teaching staff as and when kids and teachers get ill, they're asking all teaching staff to come in, despite them not all being needed. Running the risk of making all of the teachers and TAs sick quicker doesn't make any sense in this situation. It's fecking stupid.

That sounds like a different situation to what your first post alluded to that. This sounds more like a problem with the school than the policy itself then, in the same way that some businesses are adapting admirably to this, whilst others are still looking for every excuse possible to drag as many workers into offices as they can.

Has there been any reported instances of someone younger than 45 and in good health(non-smoker, no preexisting condition) passing away, apart from that one doctor in Wuhan?

It seems like around 30% of patients in the hospital are younger than 45, but it's hard to find stats over how many of these people pass away(without having a preexisting condition).
Not exactly the same but I’m in a group chat with about 20 people (we all work together) everyone is under 40. Two are currently displaying strong symptoms (coughing, fever, headache, temp) one of these two people is a chain smoker, the other missed three months of work a while back as he had the whooping cough. Nobody else in the group has anything at the moment.

Yeah, this is a fairly recent development. The decisions about whose parents constituted an essential worker were made by asking 6 year olds what their parents did for a living, so was equally retarded. And rather than asking if both parents were essential workers, they just seem to be asking if one is, which is still totally skewing the results. They're a bit of a shambles in all honesty.
