Nah, just a PRC fan.Is he another virologist ?
come across a crazy Celtic fan whilst you’ve been there? So Phuket and rest of Thailand including Bangkok is finally reaching lock down status: In Phuket, all bars, restaurants, massage spas, gyms and other places of social gathering have been closed. The gym I was training at and surrounding area of amenities shut down yesterday. Most tourists panic fled since last weekend.
So I essentially have the whole island to myself. And my flight isn't til next Wednesday 25th (when my visa also runs out). Every tourist related business is cutting prices for the few of us the remain.
So have checked into a stunning beach and sunset facing 5* hotel for £35 per night and will enforce physical distancing from here til my flight home to the madness of London next Wednesday. The beach in front normally has 500 people. Today there were 6 of us.
Have been getting so much valuable information on wagers happening in UK and Europe from this thread - thanks all for keeping me informed!
TB and AIDS...Yes. But this kills mainly (not only) very old and sick. There aren't as many old people in Africa
About what? Before being a virologist I was a nuclear physicist, before that I managed a football team.... so where would you like me to begin? So give us some professional knowledge then
TrueNah, just a PRC fan.
Was being sarcastic. Also what you’ve read though my post history to quote was taken out of context, I did what I had to do to protect myself.Seems like a responsible thing for a professional virologist to do. 10/10.
This is a horror movie. Not reality. The logic behind panic buying is the fear that there won't be any open stores or groceries left because the people responsible for the supply chain will stop showing up for work.
Only that in reality it usually happens only in disaster/survival/horror 28 days type of movies, not in real life.
Nah, just a PRC fan.
Call the cops.I know @4bars mentioned that people were flouting the ban in Spain earlier in this thread - I was suprised as it's been really quiet down south - but tonight there's a full on kid's Spanish birthday party* going on down the road from me. Seems like we're fecking idiots too (I'm Brit but in Spain 7 years).
I just don't get it. I can't understand the mentality.
*basically, the entire family potentially 50+ people, flamenco dancing, PA system and it'll be going on til 1 or so in the morning
This is wrong. If there are two people in a home and Person A becomes symptomatic, they self isolate for 7 days and Person B house isolates for 14 days. If Person B then becomes symptomatic on Day 14 or even the morning of Day 15, they would need to self isolate themselves for a further 7 days, which would be 21 or 22 days.Dont understand the penic buying. At most you self isolate for 2 weeks.
So day one go and buy 2 weeks worth of groceries. By day 8 you'll have ate a week, so go and buy another weeks worth.
You'll always have more or less 2 weeks stock on hand.
There's no call to buy a months worth of food every week. Its physically impossible to get through.
He is a doctor, not sure about his specialty. Is he another virologist ?
been thinking the same, stands to reason they have healthier people and better careThe only thing giving me any sense of hope in this madness is the German numbers. What's going on there?
@Varun please eat this monsterWas being sarcastic. Also what you’ve read though my post history to quote was taken out of context, I did what I had to do to protect myself.
the virus itself is an underlying health issue.Every time we get the latest updates about people who have died in the UK, it is always accompanied with the fact that they had underlying medical issues. I wonder how true this is.
Yes but when you look at the content of carts of panic buyers, you find ridiculious quantities on items. Like the story posted with the couple stocking on Moutain Dew, I've read stories of people doing the same with ice creams, cookies, sodas. Like wtf ? These products are the worst to consume in times like these. You don't wanna more problems on your system that it needs. The logic behind panic buying is the fear that there won't be any open stores or groceries left because the people responsible for the supply chain will stop showing up for work.
Only that in reality it usually happens only in disaster/survival/horror 28 days type of movies, not in real life.
They'll undoubtedly find anything in someone's medical history to class as an unspecified 'underlying condition'. Has anyone never been to the doctors?Every time we get the latest updates about people who have died in the UK, it is always accompanied with the fact that they had underlying medical issues. I wonder how true this is.
I wonder what the proportion of 50/60+ yr old people who dont have at least 1 other medical condition isEvery time we get the latest updates about people who have died in the UK, it is always accompanied with the fact that they had underlying medical issues. I wonder how true this is.
An unintended side effect of this as well is that healthcare workers are struggling to get what they need. One of the nurses I work with had a bit of a meltdown a few days ago about the public hoarding all of these supplies and expecting her to go hungry and with a dirty ass.Yes but when you look at the content of carts of panic buyers, you find ridiculious quantities on items. Karma I guess!@sammsky1 A french prick influencer traveled to Thailand just before the confinement measures and was boasting how he'd be able to train with the open gyms there. A couple of days later, they closed down the gym he was going to and the man got some well deserved abuse on his page
Plenty of all sorts of crazies out here, hard to distinguish one from another!come across a crazy Celtic fan whilst you’ve been there?
Probably true. The vast majority killed by this will have underlying heath conditions (incl. severe obesity) or be over 70.Every time we get the latest updates about people who have died in the UK, it is always accompanied with the fact that they had underlying medical issues. I wonder how true this is.
@Varun please eat this monster
Get PTSD just reading this.I know @4bars mentioned that people were flouting the ban in Spain earlier in this thread - I was suprised as it's been really quiet down south - but tonight there's a full on kid's Spanish birthday party* going on down the road from me. Seems like we're fecking idiots too (I'm Brit but in Spain 7 years).

I am not a virologist, I was a Pathology Resident for three years and now work as a non-specialist doctor (basically a cheap GP) whilst I wait for the bureaucracies of starting a new residency. Is he another virologist ?
Some people are saying it’s the way deaths are reported. So if someone catches Corona but has an underlying health issue then then the death gets attributed to the health issue. The only thing giving me any sense of hope in this madness is the German numbers. What's going on there?
This sounds very like the direction the UK government were debating at one point. Effectively 4 months quarantine for the ones at most risk. The debate about school closures told us how little chance there was of the public accepting it.David Katz of Yale-Griffin prevention research center making the case to end social distancing and focusing solely on the high risk groups.

NiceSeems like a responsible thing for a professional virologist to do. 10/10.
I have very mild asthma that is only a slight issue during very high pollen counts, and when I have bad cold / flu. I wonder if this would be classed as an underlying medical condition? I was under the impression it would need to be chronic asthma to be classed as a underlying health condition. They'll undoubtedly find anything in someone's medical history to class as an unspecified 'underlying condition'. Has anyone never been to the doctors?
That's probably true. I posted some numbers from Italy earlier. Of the thousands that have sadly passed, there were only three people who had no underlying medical issues.Every time we get the latest updates about people who have died in the UK, it is always accompanied with the fact that they had underlying medical issues. I wonder how true this is.
From what I’ve seen so far, most of the people passing away from this are indeed elderly, have co-morbidities however that is far from the whole story. But what’s scary is how quickly they deteriorate, this is not a ‘flu’ that’s for sure.Every time we get the latest updates about people who have died in the UK, it is always accompanied with the fact that they had underlying medical issues. I wonder how true this is.
You know I was taking the piss with that right ?I am not a virologist, I was a Pathology Resident for three years and now work as a non-specialist doctor (basically a cheap GP) whilst I wait for the bureaucracies of starting a new residency.
When I mention my "expertise" I am talking about basic medical sciences (and related fields) on which I am obviously qualified and without which it becomes difficult to interpret microbiologic, epidemiologic, public health information, etc. Even specialized journalists struggle with this.
Where this expertise is relevant on this China thing is mostly in understanding how stuff like "they could have acted in December" makes no sense at all (irrespective of how many flaws you find in the process), not if you understand how scientific knowledge in general, and medical sciences in particular, are built upon.
I claim no expertise in whatever is going on with China politics or the way they usually handle things, I just happen to have a wider perspective on how they handled this due to my base knowledge. I then read posters like @Foxbatt (and it's not the first time he writes about this in here, completing my thoughts or correcting them) who seem very well informed on China specifics and things just make sense.
I remember being thought of a nutter when suggesting the world needed to lockdown for 2 weeks. This is frightening.
