Christ almighty, look at two things - where the ball was flicked on & how many players were between DDG & this spot. Both completed negated DDG’s ability to collect / punch the ball. Common sense dictates this even before understanding the play.
He could try re
This was not a cross a keeper can claim easily. The whole issue is where the ball was flicked, it’s to the near side of the fecking near post. If you think that it should be in a top GK’s repertoire to attempt a save like that, you are showing you know nothing of the position at a high level & need to stop embarrassing yourself. DDG is not a good cross claiming keeper, there’s no debate there. He doesn’t have the physique for it, he misjudged mid goal or far post ball flights, & he punches incorrectly, but he’s not at fault for a near post flick over six yards away from him.
I agree that it's a great ball in and preventing a goal there would be hard.
My point is, at least try.
Watch it again and tell me how any single action he does could have prevented a goal.
He does nothing apart from, if anything, move away from the ball.
It's happening all the time and how people can't see how much this is costing us is the biggest mystery I've ever encountered in 30 years of watching football.

I agree with this. And I also played in goal. It’s just not a good look for a keeper when a ball bounces in the middle of the goal, 3 yards out. It’s always been a flaw in his game, so it’s not exactly a huge surprise either. Brilliant save a few minutes earlier, mind you.
Even with that....if you're a keeper as well, do his one handed saves make you nervous? they do with me. Especially reaching across to his left with his right hand to make the save. If he can get his right hand there then he can get his left as well. Use both hands. He made it look like a better save than it was, and made it harder than it was. It was a routine save. The type keepers love to make because it's a good one for the cameras...

I've played in goal my whole life. Yes, he should have been out on that. It's an inswinger inside his 6 that is 3 yards from him. He should be commanding his area. Guaranteed it was part of their plan to whip inswingers inside the 6 on corners because they know De Gea won't be commanding and come and punch...
Absolutely no way he should have been out on that. Look at where the ball is flicked & look at how many players are in that area. It’s the level at which one plays when one can understand that this cross was not collectible in any way. It would have been a massive mental error to have committed to the ball & to have left the goal exposed.

I’m ok with his technique on that one tbh. I also don’t think it was as easy as you make out.

You simply don’t know what you’re talking about. A top hand save allows for a longer reach, a wider area to make the save, and an easier extension, plus the ability to land a bit softer. Yes, many saves can be made bottom hand due to the increased physical aspects of keepers today, to think that his save today was improper is just ignorant.

Did you not watch the Spurs game? And then him getting done at the near post the following game? Get your tongue out of arse you clown.
Exactly, potentially costing us top 4 exactly like last season.
These fine margins at the top level are where your big earners should win you points but instead we make a guy who's costing us champions league football the highest paid player in the league.
If we let that happen two years running then we don't deserve to be back at the top.

How should he organise his defense? We are a goal up and last minute of the game. It's all out defense. He should have put one on each post.
Then his positioning was wrong too.
If it's that close a good commanding keeper would have come out and punched it. If he didn't come out and was in the correct position he should not let it get to Martins.
He is not commanding enough to give live instructions to his defenders.
Yes he made a brilliant save too.

It seemed as though we were zonally marking as well (at least some of us were) which doesn’t lead itself to be able to handle runs in front of oneself (like what happened to Lindelöf). It could have been to plant bodies on the posts for exactly what happened; a defender on the back post could have come out to deal with the flick rather than being bodied away from the ball. This could have been on DDG or on the coaching staff.

Exactly my point, a goalkeeper that doesn't have the physique (or confidence) to come for crosses shouldn't be playing at the top level in one of the most physical leagues in the world.
To go a step further and make him the highest paid player in that league is an absolute shambles.

His right hand post was overloaded with players whilst Lindelof had no team mate near him after Williams went off. I criticise him for not coming of line a lot but because of the flick on I doubt he could have reacted quick enough to the change of direction of the ball.

He's left the goal exposed anyway though by just standing there daydreaming, how's that any better?

I've long accepted that De Gea is not a commanding presence in the box. If he can't improve that aspect of his game, we could maybe mitigate this problem some other way.

That cross was one that should not be attempted to be claimed by a top keeper. The position has also much to do with being mentally aware & not overcommitting. DDG is not at fault for this goal; if the ball was lifted more to the middle / far post, then he should have claimed it. No top keeper is claiming a bear post flick that is eight plus yards from him. No top keeper leaves his that goal that exposed.

Correct but I don't think any coach is going to override the keeper's instructions on a set piece. I don't think any player would either. He should have pulled back everyone and knowing we are a man down and the last minute he should have realised what is going to happen.
A player on each post would allow him to be in a position that's a bit centre of the goal. He put Lindelof under enormous pressure to deal with the far post and the Soton player.

This is essentially why Maguire was signed but its not enough especially as we want to play from the back where DDG again is a liability

You’re making a bit of an ass of yourself repeating this idiocy. There were many fault for the goal, DDG’s culpability in it was very much on the low end.

You’re not wrong, but it also looks like some of the defenders were man, some were zone. That smacks of inconsistent coaching ahead of a potential play. Shit like this needs to get straightened out on the training ground.

Ah well that’s all the evidence I need then, he’s also came and claimed plenty, gk are either heroes or villains which sadly leads to terrible posters like you blaming them
When they aren’t superman diving over players twice their size.

If you really think he was at fault today it’s best we end this hear as you really really have no clue

It’s smacks of a team that just lost a defender then his replacement and left with 10 men

I agree with you. Our set pieces have been terrible for a long time. But it's the keeper's duty to organise his defense too. He could have put anyone in the posts and he would be free to deal with it.
I really don't believe Ole is going to instruct his keeper not to organise his defense the way he wants.

I’d be looking at him for the pass to Pogba for the 1st goal, that’s about it , not at fault for the 2nd goal

Considering the ball was won by the southampton player, id say he did the right thing not taking a crazy risk at that stage of the game

Absolutely, it showed that we were mentally all over the place. Could DDG have helped to eliminate that confusion, yes. But, there should have been rote memorization in place for players to know where to go & to what to do. The whole corner sequence looks quite the abortion for anyone who knows what to look for / what they’re talking about.

I'll stop repeating it when he stops doing it, I'd really really like that.

£375,000 a week for 'low end culpability'.
We're getting real value for money there then.

This was clearly a poor choice on his part. Pogba fecked it up more, but don’t put your teammate in this position.

I actually blame DDG more if he didnt tell Pogba he had a man on when passing him the ball

Great point. Even if it is redundant, you always need to tell your teammate whose back is to the opponent where his defender is & which way he can turn. Hopefully this was / is being done consistently. We might be able to hear such on a non-crowd noise clip.

Neville said in to the lead up to Martial’s goal. Get it wide from the kick out and then work it in to the midfield. Was it this season something similar happened Fred in Molineaux?

That corner takes about a second to reach the edge of 6 yard box. De Gea has 4 United players in front of him and 3 Soton players. Its not the strongest area of his game so it would be bizarre for him to try to come out for this. He’s never getting there. How many times have we seen keepers who are far more commanding than him being absolutely left in no mans land because they’ve misjudged that. Blaming De Gea for this is absolutely ridiculous.
