Maguire had very poor game, his defending was poor, took too many unnecessary touches instead of playing the passes quickly when players had good amount of space. He really should step up, Maguire and Matic combination was a suicide today. Both had same problems, too many touches and didn't release the ball quickly. To make it worse, they both played close to each other.

Blaming him for the second goal is hilarious though, not surprised with few posts. Probably they are the same one who would be defending Lindelof and nothing against his poor defending for second goal. Everyone has their agendas, criticism, what they see in the game is very selective. Saying that Lindelof had better game, made some very important clearances.
I mean he was man marking Bissaka and in doing so the ball passes by him. If he’d realised Bissaka had the boy covered he could be there to stop it. There was a load of errors in that moment. Got 4 players/5 if you count Maguire that can win that ball before the flick on.

Then there is Lindelof on the wrong side of the boy and not being strong enough.

I think overall there were some pretty good bits of defending from Harry in the game but when he’s pressed along with Bissaka and Lindelof they kind of fall to pieces. They looked shaky in the Bournemouth game as well.

He wasn't. He was trying to move to attack the ball before Southampton player flicked it on. AWB and Maguire were in each others path there. I don't know why people keep repeating that he was marking AWB.

And there is no way any CB would have won that header from Maguire's position. Corner was flat and whipped at pace, Maguire should turn into superman to jump infront for Southampton player and he should do that within a second. That was a near post corner for flick on. Only way we could have avoided the goal was with Matic winning that header or some other player defending the flick on near the goal line.

Overall I think Maguire was very poor today. Poor on the ball and positioning. Lindelof had good game except that goal moment.

Maguire is to blame for the 2nd goal as much as Lindelof. What was that defending ? Man-marking Wan Bissaka lool ! Its starting to get annoying, he either gets beaten every game at 1v1 situations cause hes slow and has a turning cirlce of a train, or hes doing something stupid like that in defence. He must immediately improve big time !

If there’s no way a CB wins the header why does he move into that position?

Had he stood still he probably gets the flocked on ball but by misreading the flight of the cross he runs directly into AWB & renders himself useless. He ends up occupying the exact same dot AWB is in, hence he might aswell be marking him.

It wasn’t a good moment for him.

I was more meaning the 2nd phase after the flick. If he’s not man marking Bissaka he’s in position to react for the ball after the header is won.

Hes trying to get across to block another Southampton player making a run in my eyes and has his eyes fixed on the ball and doesn’t realise Bissaka is now the man he’s holding on to.

What? I said there is no way CB can header from Maguire's position. Why does he move into that position? Because that's how we set up for corners. Mix of man marking and Zonal marking.

Ball was at near post with matic challenging for the ball, somehow people are blaming Maguire for not winning header.

No AWB and Maguire are not going same role. AWB is man marking Southampton player, Maguire is defending his zone. It was good corner with near post flick on.

I think he saw the delivery and made the move in that direction, something that is natural. When Southampton player got infront of Matic and flicked it on, there was only way it was ending.

Even if Maguire didn't move and just stood there, it would need De Gea like reflexes to react to the flick on. It was at good pace.

Did I say they are doing the same role or that Maguire ends up in the same position? 2 different things.

As you say the delivery was good & the ball was flicked on but to say Maguire had nowhere else to be but then tell me he’s got a ‘zone’ to mark is ridiculous unless you believe his zone was that exact square foot.

Had he not rushed forward & marked another part of his zone [the area he vacated would be a start] he would have been in a better position to play an active role in defending the goal.

Before you go all Ole Gunnar & start telling me the intricacies of what we do in training, read what’s written.

I agree there’s no way he gets the initial ball; he starts off in a position where had he stayed he intercepts the flicked on ball - instead he wanders around the ‘zone’ & ends up occupying the same space as a teammate.

Zonal marking doesn’t mean running round like a headless chicken; he’s given the role to seek out danger within an area - the part of his zone he ends up in leaves him ineffective.

Ball was at near post with matic challenging for the ball, somehow people are blaming Maguire for not winning header.
Are they? Or are they blaming him for finding himself occupying the same blades of grass AWB did in the second phase.

I’ve not seen anyone say he should win the first header but I’ve seen lots asking where he is going?

He can’t win the first ball so why move in that direction & occupy the same space as AWB; his zonal role in that situation is to trust AWB to man mark & plug another dangerous gap in his zone.

He got done against Stanislas but being objective the two goals we let in yesterday are on Lindelof and Pogba

Well this clears it then, he can't win first header, once that header was lost it wasn't on Magurie, it's near impossible to react to that flick on. Only way to avoid that goal after the flick on was by Lindelof staying infront of attacker, instead of being at the wrong side.

Yeah sure if he had spiderman like reflexes, all easy.

I'm not convinced Maguire is any better than Chris Smalling, when it comes to just basic defending. Winning headers, clearing the ball and aerial duels.

I wasn't expecting him to be amazing on the ball, but I was expecting him to be much better in aerial duels.
Because he isn’t, really. He’s probably better in the air but beyond that...

No. the second goal is on Maguire not Lindelof.

Maguire was marking AWB.
Ok I can accept the argument that maybe its a joint responsibility of the both but the man who scored was man marked by Lindelof. To be clear I don't want to start a debate on a public thread I just can't see how its not Lindelofs. It was weak ass defending from him as usual

Maguire has some good traits, a good personality for a CB and is a good leader. Those are all worthwhile in a winning team. But on plain bread and butter defending, he will probably cost you 10 goals a season with poor defending, erratic decisions or being caught for pace. Not sure he will ever be world-class and definitely not worth 80m, was a 50m player at best, even with the 'English tax'.

I'm not going to try and blame him for their second but he was total shite yesterday. Isn't he supposed to be good on the ball?

He is but he couldn't deal with their pressing intensity. Tbf to him even Pogba struggled with their press, shows how good they are. IIRC they are the best or among the best in top 5 leagues when it comes to pressing.

Agree with the shit part, he was very poor. Whole game he looked like a nervous wreck.

Apparently Maguire and Lindelof are good ball playing defenders but I don't see them switching the play at all with their passing. They are good at running with the ball but when it comes to distribution, it's not good. They should be passing the ball from deep instead of relying on Pogba to do that.

Did a great job marking Wan Bissaka there . Did use both hands on him to stop him challenging mind you . Just a shame it was his own team mate
His player neither AWB not Stephens got to the ball so what will you say about Matic and Lindelöf?

It says he left Lindelof marking 3 players at the back post by himself

And the only player Lindelöf is marking he scored the goal due to Lindelöf allowing him to out muscle him not for the first time.. This is collectively bad from the defensive unit and the only thing Harry does there is being part of it. Goals yesterday were on DDG and Pogba. And the second on Rashford, Matic, Lindelöf and to a degree DDG as I am getting tired of not having a pressure relieving keeper.. Harry is the least of our problems but he never was worth 80m but that's not his problem really.

Don't think De Gea could have done anything for second goal, it was a near post flick on. IMO it's on Matic/Rashford for losing the initial header and then Lindelof for weak defending.

I agree not his worst but I am so tired of having a keeper that never comes out and collects the ball in his life. Being this weak in standards is more than not down to having a weak keeper so all the players can feel that, reminding you that even with VVD Liverpool suffered from that. Allison has changes completely.

Being English apparently as there is nothing else in him i can see that points to him being a leader or having any sort of personality

He’s great at being the Admin of the players whatsapp group & has organised a few trips to Pizza Express.

It’s an intangible that people use to praise him cause if you judge him simply by what he does physically on the pitch he’s nowhere near as good as we need him to be.

Told you he was a waste of money. 80 Million? Only someone clueless would buy him at that price. Could have got someone just as good for less than half the price.

I swear Rio and Vidic weren't ridiculously excused as this guy. Whenever he does a mistake people come here and say it's his partner's fault for not covering for him. For feck?

Performance threads can be classified into two opinions :

He's my favorite player so he's immune to criticism from me. His faults are due to everyone's else and not him.

He's not my favorite player so I will slaughter him every game no matter what his performance is and keep asking for him to get replaced.

I just dont see either of them as good with the ball. They occasionally make a forward run which looks good but pressure them and they go to pieces. You could add De Gea and AWB as well. Shaw is the only member of the back 5 who can handle being pressed.

I don't know. I would have hoped one of your highly paid scouts could have found someone. It wouldn't be difficult there are loads of players better than him. Stevie Wonder could have told them he was bang average.

They aren't good passers but decent with dribbling. We need better both defensively and passing. They should be hitting long passes given the time they get on the ball.

Yes, Everton also waste a shitload of money on crap.
The thing about Maguire is he is a top CB but has deficiencies. We all know we overpaid by at least £20m.

Realistically, what were the alternatives? I will tell you the names mentioned last summer.. Ruben Dias, Koulibaly, De Ligt.

Ruben Dias - £60m and we do not know how well he would adapt.

Koulibaly - £100m was asking price

De Ligt - Wanted crazy sums and he hasnt really been that much better than Maguire making alot of mistakes in italy.

They're probably on a similar money though? Besides with De Ligt you're paying for his potential as well, he will probably improve further, but will Maguire?

Some of us wanted Ake at the time, who was valued around 30-40m. Or just tell Leicester to stick their 90m valuation and continue with Smalling for another year.

De Ligt is on 8 million + 4 million after tax wages, which is around double of what Maguire earns.

Also going by reports, he rejected us. We should have signed Demiral though, there were reports that Juventus wanted 40 million for him or should have checked with Dayot to see if he is interested in the move.
