Remind me why we spent 80 mil on him? No more goals from crosses? He marked his teammate and didn't even jumped on that ball. And on many balls before that.
What a waste of money this guy is. In championship you can find defenders for 10 mil who will do exactly same job as him. Van der Vaart was right

So where is this leadership ? And what the flying feck was he doing at the corner when he left the space the ball went into to mark absolutely no one?

80 million 80 fecking million down the drain . We don't deserve champions league wasting money like that

Needs to give his head a wobble, hasn't picked up any sort of form since the restart.

Poor by his standards since the restart. He’s a good signing and is dependable but he’s looked shaky and clumsy since restart, lindelof is much better on the ball than him he just hasn’t got maguires confidence

He marked one of our players. And he didn't even jumped on ball which is going in gk area.

All four of our defensive positions are up for grabs, imo. This is including Maguire's, no matter his price tag. I fully expect us to get another defender or two in this transfer window because we need more quality there. Can't keep having these lapses in concentration or bad decision making at key points in a game.

Another useless mistake lacks concentration. He's been involved directly in a few goals we've conceded as of late. Defence is certainly not a huge issue but it's one of the highlighted weaknesses in the team.

Only to us was Maguire an £80m player. He was so much of an upgrade on what we had before that Leicester could get that kind of fee from us. Any of the other big teams would've turned them down at that asking price. He does a lot of things well but he's far from elite.

It's a mix of zonal and man marking, with Maguire covering his zone. Matic missed the header, which means Southampton player got the flick on. Then Lindelof with stupid mistake but yeah lets criticize Maguire not jumping like a superman infront of Matic

I don't think that he is even an upgrade anymore. Ithought that he is slightly better than what we had but not anymore.
Lindelof is two levels above him. And Bailly and Smalling are equal with him. So we spent 80 mil on position without upgrading it.

Thought he had a good game and not at all sure where any criticism for either goal is coming from.

Who was he marking for the second??
It’s called zonal marking! You mark an area and not a player. It statistically proven to result in significantly less goals conceded from corners compared to man marking. If you watch it he gets blocked by the Soton number 5 pushing AWB into him but the ball never enters his zone anyway.

Rush of blood to the head, stays where he is he gets that. Not really good enough defending when Lindelöf is caught wrong side too and DeGea doesn’t command the area.

Did a great job marking Wan Bissaka there . Did use both hands on him to stop him challenging mind you . Just a shame it was his own team mate

Ball is exactly going in his area.

fecking hell, this twitter guy hasn't got a clue. He isn't marking Manutd player ffs, that's mix of Zonal and man marking. Maguire is in his zone to clear the ball in 6 yard box.

The ball enters his zone when he decides to leave it

You mark the player preferably an opposing player and not space . Space never scores oddly enough

I think you’re wrong. He has to approach the ball assuming no flick on which is what he does but Matic gets beaten and AWB pushed into him. The ball doesn’t ever enter his zone.

Shouldn't you anticipate a flick on ? Especially as Matic was behind his man so the only way Matic was heading it is if the other player missed so would never have bothered Maguire anyway

Sorry but this is just completely wrong. All sides zonal mark now because it’s far more effective than man marking. This has been known for about 15 years now.
Doesn’t feel like it! We seem to concede corners all the time.

I dont know what's wrong with him but he needs to start games faster than he is doing. He was awful in the first 30 minutes.

Look you can argue zonal marking all you want that was not zonal marking . That was one player making a bad decision for no reason at the worst possible time

Great marking of Wan Bissaka. Even used two hands to pin him down and prevent him from jumping.

I don’t think it’s realistic to anticipate. The truth is that it’s a great corner and a perfect flick on. In an ideal world Matic, Lindelof and Maguire could have done things to prevent the goal but its not an egregious error from anyone.

We‘re 8th worst in the league for goals conceded from set-pieces so there’s some truth to that. My opinion is that DDG is the biggest problem because he refuses to leave his line on any set piece.

Look at the video how on earth is that zonal marking when 5 Utd players are in the one zone if you want to call it that leaving lindelof in his zone with at least two opposing players to deal with ?

He's a good defender and has improved us, but never in a million years is he a £80m defender. We got mugged off big time.
