Probably because you can go to town and see someone in a full Wednesday kit rather than United more than anything  I think it’s normal for there to be bandwagon fans though, but we’ve had great attendances from league one days.
Yeahhh usually yelling at their other halves near the cathedral next to the spice zombies on their way to the nearest Greggs.

That's true, the Sheffield Utd fans have have a different name for them but no need to go there!
Both sets of fans call each other pigs. Some bullshit about one of the grounds being built on a pig sty (hillsbrough I think?). I have no idea why Wednesday fans call United fans pigs though.

We get called pigs by them because red and white mixed = pink or alternatively we have rashers of bacon on our shirt

The 'story' is because they play in red & white looking like bacon rashers, dunno how true it is though.

Well quite, there aren't any other football clubs in those three examples!
Well that's Sheffield's problem then. They're not the best United around so no one is going to call them 'United'. They've not been relevant for long enough to be known as 'Blades' amongst the casual PL fans. 'Sheffield United' takes an extra half a second to type, and in this day and age no one has that kind of patience. They should change their name to 'Sheffield Blades' if it bothers them that much. Or if they stick around long enough in the PL then people will gradually start calling them Blades, like Tottenham have become Spurs.

Will now exit this thread sharply  We were called United first but nobody will call us that outside of this city which is normal I can accept that. Just hope we become relevant so we can be called Blades;) :nervous:

It's not about it confusing people, it's just wrong. Like when people called Maguire MacGuire for a long time when we were linked with him.
I agree those people are the same that call Manchester City just "City" without caring about Leicester City, Stoke City, Norwich City, etc

Well there's 3 Sheffield clubs. One of whom are literally called FC Sheffield, and they're not Sheffield United. Sheffield are now shite, but they're recognised as the oldest football club in the world so it's at least odd to co-opt their name and give it to one of the other clubs from the city.

Secondly, literally everyone since time immemorial has called Sheffield United Sheffield United so when people don't do that it just sounds awful.
I agree with this. When I hear someone call them Sheffield I assume they’re foreign or new to football  otherwise they would know that they’re called Sheffield United. It just reminds Me of how an American would say it

It took 11 years for @NinjaFletch to come out as a fan of Sheffield. Wasn't he supposed to identify himself as an oppo fan?

I dont see the problem.

Everyone calls Sheffield Wednesday ‘Wednesday’

You can’t really call Sheffield United ‘United’ because it’s used by loads of other British teams, plus ‘United’ is usually reserved for Manchester United.

Everyone calls Leeds United ‘Leeds’, Newcastle United ‘Newcastle’, West Ham United ‘West Ham’... therefore Sheffield United ‘Sheffield’ goes with the grain

There’s no other team in Leeds, there’s no other team in Newcastle, and there’s no other team called West Ham. If you can’t call them United they should be called Sheffield Utd, Sheff United or there were sometimes called “Sheff U” when I lived there.

I think most Sheffield United fans love it that people think there's only one club in Sheffield, tbh.
I don't think that it's the case though. People call one Wednesday and the other Sheffield because United is already taken by a more famous club.

Then call them Sheffield United like everyone in England has done for ever.

It's a bit like if people woke up one morning and started calling Bayern 'Bavaria'. You'd know what they meant, you could even argue that it makes sense because we translate München to Munich so why not the first half of their name, too, but it's just wrong. Sheffield United have been Sheffield United for ever, to hear people drop the United just sounds appalling. And it's six letters, people have spent longer replying to this thread telling us how much time they've saved than they ever would have spent typing out those letters.

I’m really hoping they can make Europe so we can have lots of threads about “Sheffield vs Athletico” and watch heads explode :D

Yeah, it's either Sheff Utd or Sheffield United, not just Sheffield. It's not recpect towards Wednesday and quite arrogant.

In the context of the two Sheffield clubs that absolutely is more usual. If you want to make it clear you're talking about the United from Sheffield rather than one of the other Uniteds you could even call them Sheffield United.

I'm not bothered. We know at this moment in time we're not talking about Wednesday, so it works for me.
