I feel he's a defender that needs a top level defender next to him. He shouldn't really be the head of our defence, no pun intended.

Smalling is grabby but very strong and fast, he doesn't get bullied.
We would have been better off with Smalling. £80m CB and we still need to bring someone else in alongside him, to make him look competent. What a nightmare.

Giroud ragdolled both Maguire and Lindelof, he is one of those strikers that likes it when a defender tries to challenge him.
Absolute calamitous performance today. His only strengths lie in the air, which Giroud completely destroyed him. Take that away from him and we saw what we're left with, and it's not pretty.

6'4, 100kg defender thinks he's Iniesta on the ball... That run he went on at the end summed him up. @GifLord can help with the vid?

Meant to be our £80m Captain? What an embarrassment.
Giroud is surprisingly good against big strong CB's, I have yet to see him being bullied. I also remember him getting the better of Van Dijk in an international match against the Netherlands.

In fact, ever since his move to Chelsea, Giroud has been surprisingly effective. FA Cup & World Cup winner in 2018, Europa League winner in 2019.
Pretyy much these. Giroud looks like Drogba in these odd games here and there. He likes these match ups, which can be bad for Harry as he isn't quite dominant like a Vinny Kompany type.

We paid £85m for a Robert Huth who thinks he's Franz Beckenbauer.

Massively overpaid for a very average centre half who had he been playing in our glory era would have been no higher than Blackburn or Bolton.

He shouldn’t be captain next season and no I’m not being knee jerk, it’s been on my mind for a while.
Agreed. Mainly to increase the possibility of us replacing him. The lack of pace is painful.

Leicester had United over a barrel - we needed a CB desperately and everyone knew it. Maguire is not the best CB around but he's improved our defence dramatically this season and will likely get better in his second season with us.
It was a low bar set by a makeshift defense to be fair.

Got his Terry Butcher look on in the first half but his limitations are too often exposed imo, needs to realize he's not that great on the ball.

Maguire was better than what we had before him. Was that worth £80m? I guess it depends if we win the next two matches. One thing is for certain: Maguire would never have played much for Fergie's best teams. Rio in his 30s was more mobile and read the game better. Maguire's main strength is giving his all. That's great on some level but it doesn't compensate for ability.

Arguably our worse player since lockdown. How many free headers does he need to get at least one on target? He's so slow does it take him 3 months to get fit or will he always be placeless and flat footed.

What so annoying is just before the 3rd goal it was his fault we gave a corner away. He didn't see Reece James on the right side of him so was left to Brandon Williams to cut ball out for a corner. :nono:

He's played too much and needs a rest. Too bad our other options are dog poop.

With Smalling, United wouldn’t be fighting for third place and to play CL next season. Also, the positive football we have seen in like 17 out of the last 20 last matches would not have happen with Smalling. He’s been a good defender but he has no place in a team that tries to play the football United have played lately. That’s how I fell at least.

Only seemed to up his performance when the game had gone. Can only think he was so pissed with how bad he was that he said "feck it" and started trying. Either that or he's worried about losing his place in the England set up which he shouldn't be anywhere near anyway.

Really hope @GifLord has clip of that moment. It was like a minute before Chelsea score and a ball is played in the channel. Maguire is literally looking the other way even though he knows where the ball is. It was unbelievable to me that a supposed top CB was so relaxed in that situation.

Edit: Found it on twitter

I actually think he'd be perfect for our system because we played our best when we dominated matches with Bruno and Pogba running the show, Smalling was at his best under LvG when he played a possession game. Unfortunately he never had the right players for his system. Smalling's supposedly weakness was being poor on the ball but Harry didn't exactly put on a clinic today did he? I think his passing is a bit overrated as well... when we're winning by 3 goals and he has the time and space to pick out a pass, of course he can look good.

He's not had a good game since lockdown. I had to give MOM award but no one deserved it so out of having to give one I gave it Bruno.

Yes you’re right. We were fighting for 2nd with Smalling.
