With Pogba, Bruno, VDB, Matic, Fred and McT, this is our best crop of midfielders at the club since we had Carrick, Scholes, Fletcher, Hargreaves and Anderson. I like it a lot.

Good signing. Good price. Nothing to complain about at all.

I don't know a great deal about this lad, is he much of an upgrade on on Matic and Fred?
From the admittedly little I’ve seen, he’s sort of comparable “Ability-wise” with them. Adds depth, doesn’t offer anything new. He’s still undeniably better than JLingz, Mata and Pereira though, so better than nothing.

Is he going to play AM or CM?
So far he's been much better as an AM and a lot of his best moments have come from finding spaces in dangerous attacking areas, so you'd expect him to be best as Bruno's backup. His easiest way into the team is in CM though and he's got a pretty versatile skillset so it's possible he could go on to excel in CM. A bit like Wijnaldum who was best before Liverpool in AM and has played best there for Netherlands recently too, but has excelled in a supporting role for Liverpool.

I assume this is the end of Pereira and Lingard?

Wonder if we’ll try and play him alongside Pogba and Bruno or if he will be used as cover?

Either way we need quality squad depth. Pereira and Lingard should be out of the door now.

It puts McTominay and Fred under pressure.
I don’t think it will put them under anymore pressure than they have been over the last few months. They’re both covering / competing with Matić and that will remain the case.

DVB will be cover / competition for Pogba and Bruno. It’s all very healthy.

If you're thinking about Fred in the Pogba role then he's a huge upgrade on him. He's not comparable with Matic because he's not a holding midfielder but hopefully Thiago can come in for that spot.

Hopefully it’s a sign that we are able to keep things under wraps rather than having every transfer dragged thorough the media on a daily basis.
Don't think that's the clubs fault.

Pretty much everyone knows now we have a mental reactionary fanbase following the Mourinho saga, so British clubs in particular try to play these transfers out in the media to put the board under pressure.

Instead of Lingard, Pereira, Mata, we can now bring VDB on for Bruno. Substantially improves the quality of the squad provided he adjusts to the league.

He is also a good option in a 4-3-3 as a replacement for Pogba or Bruno. Its McT who’d have to up his game.

The more I read about this, the more he looks like a quality player. Could be a brilliant signing for us.

Almost feels like we need a defensive midfielder type of signing to add balance to the team. Pogba, VDB and Fernandes + the front 3 look great from an offensive point.
I think we'll take our time with this. The successor to Matic is very important, as Matic brings a lot of qualities that your run of the mill defensive mid doesn't really possess. We'll probably have one more season with Matic as the main man, resting him when possible, and look to bring in his replacement next summer. It's definitely something we need to properly assess and get the right player.

He is a good player but I am not sure he is what we need most. Upgrade on Lingard/Pereira no doubt.

McTominay is not competing with Matic. Nobody in their right might sees him as a DM.

I've only seen this guy play once and in that game he lost the ball very easily, either via a bad pass or just getting himself in trouble.

Is this something he regularly does?

This just proves the British pressure don't know shit. The club told them we were monitoring and that's all they knew.

I would argue that there isn't really anything we don't need. We severely lack squad depth in pretty much every position.

Nice video of what he brings here if the deal does go through.

I like that he has a good first touch and moves with the ball. He also seems like a fighter with his willingness to slide tackle from a standstill. he also makes lots of forward runs which is great.

Definitely an upgrade over mctominay given he has a better first touch.
I'm not sure if this is a compliment or an insult but what I'm seeing here is, basically, a Cleverley/Fletcher hybrid.

Really curious signing as he's not had too much experience playing the DM role so I doubt the idea is for him to take over Matic long term and instead we'll use him as a way of rotating Bruno/Pogba while also using all three in games when we expect the opponent to sit back.

It puts McTominay and Fred under pressure.
Well Fred's the natural Matic back up (I think he should be starting in-front of Matic).

McTominay can back up Pogba and VDB can back up both, depending on what we need. I think it's a solid crop of midfielders

We are probably overpaying by about 10m if we achieve all bonuses but then I don't care. We have a great relationship with VDS and Ajax and it doesn't really matter if we overpay by some millions, as long as we get a good player.

Those who all blame Woodward for the delay in Sancho just come forward and accept we know how to wrap deals quickly and we are not a club who haggle for couple of millions. Probably, Dortmund has been extremely tough to deal which is causing the delay.

Best midfield we’ve had for a while isn’t it with Bruno, Pogba, VdB, Matic and Fred.

Get Mata, Pereira and Lingard off the books ASAP.

Delighted tbh, think he will be a fans favorite after few months here.

If we manage to somehow land Sancho too along with a DM or CB, we will turn this whole window around. Oh yes, feck off Levy.

Like the little I’ve seen of him, but really hope he’s not our only midfield signing.

Midfield looks very good on paper with this addition. Adds some pressure to the likes of Fred & McTominay to continue improving & hopefully permanently gets rid of Pereira.

In fairness it's a dutch player and the chances of a strong leak will come from the player rather than the club. It's only normal for reliable dutch outlets to pick this up first, before Romano/Aarons quickly confirm.

Happy with this transfer. Huge upgrade on the cover options we currently have, especially as an AM. Hopefully one of perreira or lingard can be sold now

I think Mata and Pereira can be offloaded now that DvdB is signed. Lingard can wait until Sancho's here.

Rojo, Jones and TFM can go as well.
