I have no idea how good he is, read few articles which highlighted his strengths and weakness. Watched him in few CL games and he looked impressive. Looked all action high intensity player, not sure whether he will be starting 11 player as we have Pogba and Bruno. There was some Dutch fan (IIRC) who used to beat this drum that VdB is better as a 6 and that was couple of years ago. Hopefully he was spot on.

To the skeptics,

Van De Beek was among 2019 Ballon d'Or nominees. Get that sink in first. We are not signing any mediocre part time midfielder.

Absolutely. Traditional Roy Keane types are not as important.

Look at Barca in their prime....they used to press with high intensity with Busquets, Xavi and Iniesta in midfield. Busquets is never a hard tackling midfielder. But he was technically brilliant and part of a cohesive pressing system.
You've just made me imagine a midfield of Keane, Pogba and Bruno. It would be about as close to perfect as you could get.

With Keane tearing Pogba a new one every time he was a bit lethargic or dilly-dallied on the ball too long? :D

Finally watched my first VDB youtube video and the main things I noticed is
1) Willing to do the dirty work and go into tackles
2) Great shooting technique
3) Wonderful composure on the ball. Good players always seem to have that extra second to make a pass and he seems to have it even in tight spots.

You need to go rewatch some Keano games from his prime. He was the epitome of what a great central midfielder would be today.

So youtube videos and comments on the forum. Can any hardcore all football league game watcher kindly tell just how is his overall gameplay? I think Grealish is more of a luxury player and I assume this guy is not.

I watched virtually every game Keane played for us. I know exactly what kind of midfielder he was. Your response is totally irrelevant to the point I made.

One of Keane’s best attributes was a hard tackling ball winner. The game has changed in that defensive minded ball winning midfielders are not as significant anymore. Of course Keane offered a lot more than that, but my point was that having a defensive midfielder in the traditional sense of shielding the back four and winning the ball back is not as essential as having midfielders with high intensity, stamina and the ability to press high.

So he us basically a much better version of Herrera. I am thrilled given the low fee. And we now don't have to waste money on Grealish.

Now,a proper CB would be great. Koulibali, let's go.

And a rw please

Look at City as well. So often they have Gundogan or Rodri as their "CDM"....they are not traditional "hard tacklers and win it back" kind of players. It's about having energy and enthusiasm in midfield to press. For so many years city have won the ball back through the likes of Silva, De Bruyne and Liverpool with Wijnaldum, Henderson, Firmino....none of which are traditional defensive minded players.

It's still extremely important. See Casemiero at Madrid.

His passing alone would take us up a level. Quick, incisive, accurate and forward. Perfect for this team.

What a player he was.

The same club can be used to prove my point if you look at how successful Madrid were with Modric and Kroos as their holding midfielders with the likes of Ozil or Isco in front of them in attacking mid. Neither of which were defensive minded but they still won European cups with that setup.

Keane only started sitting in front of the back 4 in his mid 30s when his hip was gone.

I can't think of many midfielders with more energy, stamina and pressing ability than Keane in his 20s. He was box to box and he did literally everything well.

Roy Keane would be the best defensive midfielder in the world today. He could do everything Rodri/Fabinho/Fernandinho/Casemiero could do, but better. Not as good at playmaking as Busquets but much better defensively.

And I don't see why he couldn't press either. He'd be brilliant in the high press ala Kante.

Kroos and Modric were mostly supported by Casemiero killing your point. What makes your point worse is that Keane can play pretty every role and suits any modern system possible. He isn't Makelele FFS. And yet one should not be narrow minded enough to believe that Makelele himself can't work in today's game when he clearly can.

They did not. In 2014 they had Khedira. And in 2014/2015 they were eliminated playing Kroos, James, Isco
In all other times they won with Casemiro.

Preparing a bid takes time, you know.
Yeah, transfers are like that. Maybe we scouted him since he was 18. Tried to sign him but Ajax wanted to develop him first and raise the price. That's how it goes for selling clubs.
I think he developed really well and we have a very good scouting report on him, not just ability wise, but on his personal life too.

The idea of strength in depth seems alien or outrageous to some fans on here.
I want VDB, I really do. When Pogba was rumoured to leave I wanted him to replace him. Also at 40m he's a no brainer. I'd be honest with you, if we sign him I'd be over the moon. However the squad is so weak that I can't blame people if they have other positions in mind that needs strengthening first

We’ll have to wait and see how the rest of the window turns out, don’t want to jump the gun, but this could be an interesting sign of things to come. VDB is a good player for sure, but he’s not playing in a position we’re desperate to fill. That makes me wonder whether we’re actually committed to building quite a large squad. Last season we barely had enough decent players to cover the first 11 so I had got used to the idea that we’d be running a thin squad under Ole. But VDB makes 6 players in midfield I’d be happy to play at various points in the season (Pogba, Fred, Bruno, McTominay and Matic the others) which gives us some really decent options. If he continues that approach to the squad up front and in defence we’ll have a squad capable of handling a long season.

This. Some people forget that Keane started off as the most advanced of a 2 men CM. Its only after Scholes was moved in CM then he took a more defensive role. Keano was quite comfortable with the ball.

Brilliant player and a good finisher as well.

Keane would be an incredible presser of the ball. His stamina was legendary and, despite what opposition fans used to make out, he was a tactically disciplined player (mostly) who was comfortable on the ball.

Not sure what does the post implies but Keane is so underrated on his ball playing skills (atleast in this post).

He was no pirlo but wasn't out of place in a midfield of Scholes,Beckham and Giggs. Do you really think he lacked that skillset ?

Not mostly mate. Keane was actually excellent on the ball. He was a major key in our keep ball game.

I think it's good news for United that someone like him (and earlier Bruno) chooses United. Not because he's the Next Big Thing, but because he apparently had a lot of choice and then went for United. To me, that signifies a belief in the current direction of the club.

Unnecessary purchase. We only did this deal only because we thought other clubs were sniffing around and not because we needed him. I dont understand the point of this signing? Is he going to be a backup? Why are we prioritizing signing backups when the season starts in 3 weeks? And if he's not a backup, how does he fit? This is all just confusing.
I thought at the end of last season everyone was saying that United have a great first team but horrendous squad. Now they buy a player that might make the first team but certainly really strengthens the squad, and that's unnecessary...?
He'll have to get used to playing with smaller footballs in the EPL.

Red Card for Casemiro!
Very pleased with the quality depth addition. Can rotate in for Bruno/Pogba and is better than Pereira/Lingard in midfield. 40m seems cheap for his age as well.

If we had such a great relation with Ajax/VDS, we should have been in Ziyech earlier for the RW. It won't matter if we get Sancho, but if we don't then not being proactive for him might be an expensive mistake.

Definitely end of the line for Mata, Andreas and Lingard, a significant upgrade in quality and a huge step in the right direction.

If we add in a winger (we all know who is the preferred option, but even Grealish/Brooks would work imo) and I think we’re in good shape. Not the finished article by any means, but sets us up well and another building block in place.
