Getting him would be too good to be true surely.

A) you'd expect competition from every club in Europe.
B) that would be close to 100m spent on 2 players. Very unlikely they'd then still be perusing their supposed "number 1 target" in right wing.

Unless they know they can offload all the players for sale (smalling, rojo, jones, lingard, pereira, sanchez) for decent money.

Although I guess United know that some of the top clubs aren't spending this summer. So this is the most open market we'll ever have. Don't sign him this summer, you won't get a chance next summer. Would be smart to take advantage. Would we have got Van De Beek in a normal market where Madrid and Barcelona would have £40m to wipe their arses with?

Sancho being a £100m player, can probably be bought next summer for a similar price and just as little competition.
Yeah I agree with you.

Im also a tad bit surprised other clubs haven’t already come in for Upamecano.. I’d have expected city & Chelsea to definitely show some concrete interest but I think both clubs’ plan was to go for a more finished article sort of player aka Koulibaly & Silva.. However we on the other hand can afford to buy him this young and let him take a year or two to fully settle in.

On a side note - I’m actually shocked & impressed with our clubs activity in the transfer market this summer.

1) I just didn’t expect our club to go and actually buy VdB whose such a vital and useful player for us in the midfield. Provides backup in multiple positions. And possesses the level of quality required to play for our club. We usually end up buying overrated players at overrated prices and then play them out of position too.

2) Also didn’t rush into making signings as soon as the window opened. Sure it got us fans panicked but as long as we’re active and actually buying players that make sense I’m okay with having waited this long. Looks like we’re playing our cards wisely.

Where the grass is greener.
Fred is a useful squad player, but if we brought Thiago in (we won't) or just about anyone a bit better I'd not shed even the smallest of tears. But obviously you'd want to see the likes of Lingard and Andreas out the door first.

This is the piece I posted earlier which is written by Whittel and not Hirst.
Haha I actually & literally just visited the Upamecano thread and realized you already posted there so my apologies!

I haven’t been visiting player threads much and mostly just stick to this transfer tweets thread to get daily updates quickly so I figured I’d confirm the reliability here.

Not loading for me, what does it say?
That United are making a move for Upamecano with (I think) £37m bid, and they tagged Hirst. Been deleted now though, although 1-2 other journalists are reporting similar after Ogden broke this.

Why shouldn't we judge a player on their output? He wasn't playing as a holding midfielder for the vast majority of his minutes. He managed 0 goals 0 assists in 2,159 minutes in the league. Goretzka for Bayern plays as a CM in a 4231 and managed 6 goals and 9 assists in 1,513 minutes. We finished our season with no trophies and 66 league points. They won a treble. Mediocre might be fine for you but it's not for me.

Get off your high horse ffs

Context is King as they say. We can judge players on their output if it is relevant to the role they are asked to carry out. It's quite clear to me that neither of the two CM/DMs in our system are overly burdened with the responsibility of getting goals and assists. Yes it's nice if they can chip in with a few but it's not their primary responsibility.

People wondering why Liverpool haven't snapped him up yet so this is the reason I would presume, trying to figure out what's he's looking for in wages but If we asked about signing him and said this it must be huge money which neither us or Liverpool will give him.

I had a feeling it was the wages and not the transfer fee holding this transfer back.

But if we can move on Fred I’d totally hope we try to sign Thiago. He’ll be really useful when playing the top 6 and CL teams.

Hirst tweet deleted now?
They deleted it because it wasn't Hirst who wrote the piece but rather Ian Whittel. The Times twitter account has now corrected their error and tagged Whittle.

He's one of the best centre mids in the world so i'm guessing he wants wages that are closer to Pogba's than Henderson's.

If we’re getting VDB and keeping Pogba, Thiago might be overkill. It’d make sense singing a proper DM instead.

Damn, got pretty excited when I saw Hirst claiming the info (although less excited about the Van de Beek being a Sancho alternative hidden in the article). Not sure who Whittle is, but his twitter account seems to have no profile picture and about 1000 followers so assuming he's pretty new.

I wonder how much is he on in Bayern currently? Surely up to 200k?

I actually think it’ll be the opposite of overkill. He’d be an ideal signing for us in terms of the number of positions he can play. He’ll be decent cover for Pogba as well as DM position. Matic & Thiago will each be able to get rest in between games by covering for each other while also fulfilling different functionalities.

Matic can be used in games where teams will be sitting back more so Thiago can be rested. While Thiago will be more useful in games against top 6 or maybe even top 10 PL sides as well as in CL games.

Pogba’s injury record would also make Thiago really useful in critical games where Pogba isn’t potentially available.

But I think we should only go for Thiago if we can move on one of Fred/McT.

Whittle has been around for awhile. I think he was covering for Hirst whilst the big man took bank holiday off.

220k I have seen, his Bayern deal he turned down was over 250k
Cheers, that pretty much explains it. He's 29, has a questionable injury record, wants nig wages and probably a long contract...on top of Bayern demanding a fee of €30m for him.

Why are his wage demands so high? Bayern aren't known for paying massive salaries, are they?

That will be why that tweet got deleted. Papers making nonsense up and immediately being found out on it, you love to see it.
Most of the journalists mentioning Upamecano are fully aware of that contract extension.
