had Facebook and Twitter not done anything, this story would have fizzled out

I very much doubt that. The loony right would have taken this and ran with it regardless. I'd argue that de-platforming it was a good idea. Sure, the act of de-platforming it is going to garner some attention, but not as much as if it was actually allowed to flourish on its own. If the age of Fake News has shown us anything, it's definitely not that Twitter and Facebook have been too heavy-handed in their handling of mis- and disinformation.

Define neutral.

Do you mean Facebook, Twitter, etc. should not shut down hate groups, delete threats, stop dangerous misinformation?

This is the big question these platforms and many of us are grappling with. What constitutes hate, a threat or dangerous (mis)information? Who gets to make these judgement calls?

Do you really think the word hate is that ambiguous?

absolutely. getting gender pronouns wrong is seen as hate speech by some, not by others. denying the armenia genocide is fair game in turkey, hate speech in armenia. hate is contextual.
Inciting violence against people based on their race, ethnicity, sexual orientation. Is this enough for you to be classified as hate speech?

Guardian reports 14 million early votes have been cast (presumably with a clear majority for Biden).

Even if Trump pulls back the deficit that is a lot of votes already cast for his opponent (you would presume).

EDIT: Figures are here - https://electproject.github.io/Early-Vote-2020G/index.html
Apparently in Texas today it was an hour wait at most large early voting stations.

Generally speaking, early voters in record numbers are against the party in power.

Texas had 1 million early voters today... they had 9 million in total in 2016...

I wouldnt even be worried about the Mail in ballots, I think Trump is about to get absolutely steam rolled by in person voting.

well obviously misinformation is up for debate after what fb and twitter have done. in a way the debate is good, because "fake news" is a very wide term that can mean anything. nyt reporting on saddam's WMDs was literal fake news fed by sources with vested interests but it would never be falgged as such.

Agree with that. I looked at the figures some more....

Nationally, voters have cast 10.8% of the total votes counted in the 2016 general election.

In Florida, voters have cast 20% of the total votes counted in 2016.

Tremendous.

@Libano

A nice summary of the conspiracy theory from Reddit:

Why should any platform give users the right to share such damaging nonsense without any checks and balances?

This! It's about fecking time social media started cleaning up the mess they've let develop for way too long. The only winners have been merchants of hate, fear and manipulation.

Lefties are the ones who suffer the most when SNS do clean-ups on their platform, not the right wingers. Occasionally you have the likes of Alex Jones who found a way to off himself despite the lenient treatment but generally those ‘merchants of hate, fear and manipulation’ are unaffected because they’ve perfected the Orwellian doublespeak approved on those platforms.
