Am I right in thinking this is the most high-profile actor to come out as transgender thus far? I can't seem to recall anyone else at that Oscar-nominated level doing so.

It will be interesting to see how his career is impacted and what sort of roles he now gets.
 
The Wachowskis were probably the highest-profile people in the film industry to come out as transgender.

Not his biggest fan, but wish him well.

No but seriously it will take me a while to get used to calling him him and Elliot because he's had a lot of roles under the Ellen. He's not had the highest profile roles for a while but still seems to pop up every now and again.

How about at any level?

All I can think of is the singer, Sam whatsisname and the boxing promoter (again, can’t remember name)

Don't know what singer you mean but I didn't know about Keith Caputo until quite recently. Now Mina. In case anybody remembers Life of Agony.
 
This bit confuses me:

Page uses both he/him and they/them pronouns, and describes himself as transgender and non-binary, meaning that their gender identity is neither man nor woman.

It does seem as though they’ve got that bit wrong, no? If his preferred pronouns are he/they then their gender indentity is not as a woman, right?

Sam Smith isn’t transgender as far as I know.

Good luck to Elliot Page. Good for him. Will definitely take some getting used to as he’s been Ellen Page for a while and quite well known.

I concur with others given the amount of roles Page has had under the name Ellen, it will take a bit to adapt. But that's on us not on them and we'll do our best.

As said above, can someone explain how you can be trans and non binary? Is it that sometimes they don't feel like a man, but they never feel like a woman at all?

It makes casting for future roles interesting.

Will he only apply for male roles? Or will he be up for playing male and female characters? Presumably gender dysphoria isn’t a problem if he’s only acting as a woman?

Definitely makes life a lot more complicated than a similar announcement from, say, a musician.
 
Im looking forward to the day when such declarations arent major news because there is complete acceptance in society. Sadly I dont think this will happen in my lifetime. I do understand that people will want to make these declarations as they are working out who they are, I just hope one day that its seen as being simply a part of lifes path as unsurprising as getting your drivers licence.

It shouldn't be too hard. I can't think of many films where the dialogue outright states the gender of a character. Even Arnie in Predator doesn't run around shouting "I Am Man Rooooaaarrrr" or "yarrgghh" with a thick Austrian accent. I mean, we know he's a bloke because he refuses to ask for directions when he's lost in the jungle and he falls arse backwards into solutions for stuff but claims it was intentional (like rolling around in mud for a laugh) but still.

Even characters that have moments where they do reference their gender is a simple change for writers, unless the characters identity is purely as a red blooded female/male sex machine with massive robotic boobies/beard.

I'm not saying "don't ask, don't tell" because that would be taking a step backwards in society. But more "it doesn't really matter unless you're a raving Lawrence Fox twat type".
 
Just asking because I'm curious - but is it very common for transgender people to change their names?

I guess I come from a culture that has gender neutral names - and even when some names are more commonly used for men/women, it doesn't feel unusual to see them used on the other.
 
I thought we already knew this? It was obvious to see she was on that side of things.

There’s always been a problem with transgender people not getting transgender roles in movies. Now that somebody as talented as Elliot is transgender they lose the argument if “nobody good enough.”
 
So is Eliot a straight man now? Forgive me for being confused, but if his prefers pronouns are he/they, how does this whole thing of being plural make sense?

It's silly to think this wouldn't be news. Whether people want to believe it or not, it is not an everyday thing to hear about and it's more interest. But I am glad it's news, not just so Elliot gets it out there but more importantly for people who are struggling themselves. It does inspire people to come out - which is why when the first active top level athlete/footballer comes out, it will be a huge story.

Yes there will be some dicks who are bad about it but it is usually overwhelmingly supportive. Not the same thing but I suffered from an eating disorder and it got horrible in my mid 20s to the point I was hospitalised - I refused to seek help as I was embarrassed, didn't think it was common for men to get it (let alone my age) etc. If I knew it was earlier then I could have got help sooner.

It's news but I think it's the right kind of thing. It hopefully opens the door for more people to be who they want to be

That's genuine, I don't know what pronoun to call Elliot. Not meant as disrespect, if I spoke in person I would ask the question how they would be like to be referred to (except by name)

(I hope pronoun is the right word, I have no idea but I think it is)

I don’t think they meant it maliciously. I asked my wife the genuine question of, do I say “I loved him in Juno” or do I use ‘her’ as he was a female then.

I’m ignorant on the matter so I would like to be educated on this.

Use 'him' but if referring to the character he played you use she/her as the character is a girl.
