The most baffling thing about him so far is that many Man Utd fans actually rate him. That means many Man Utd fans don't know much about him. He is as average as a Premier League footballer could be.

He has got games and has been completely uninspiring. The less he is playing, the better he seems to be getting. He is not a much better option than Mata, Lingard or Andreas Pereira. Would be much more obvious if we didn't have better players that have allowed him to hide on the bench.
This is just a lightly thought statement, I wish there was some argument on it at least bt some times is a lot to ask.

I find it so weird that anyone is a fan of a player, rather than the club.

he will get his chances, and if he has to wait, then so what. Other players are playing better than him - you need a competitive squad to be successful.
Is that that really so weird? I've always been a big fan of Robben and followed the clubs he played at. I actively followed Bayern for years, but now that he's gone, I couldn't care less about them.

Might also be, because the club I support doesnt actually have a chance to win anything mostly.

That being said, if Robben ever plays against Feyenoord again, I will obviously not be rooting for him.

He’s not even playing but every time we have a match you see new page. Are we talking about his warm up performance?

Donny is good player and much better than pereira, it’s an upgrade but he’s not that good that he will cement our regular spot. The guy was never nailed the starting XI spot with Netherlands national team, always rotated with others while Wijnaldum and De Jong are the ones who nailed the XI spot. If he can’t even be regular in national team then it’s fair to say he still has things to improve to nail the United regular spot.

The getting accustomed to the league stuff also seems strange. Take Ziyech for example, sure, he's injured, but it took him about 3 minutes to get used to the league and he's been excellent. He came from the same team in the same shitty league.

how well have some of Chelsea’s other big name signings settled in? Look at players like Fabinho, even Fred. Some players take time.

They're just not as good, same for Donny, Im sure he can eventually become a decent squad player, but he can acclimatise to the league until 2065, he will never be Ziyech, or Bruno or any other great player.

Of course there are exceptions, but meh, I think the concept is a bit overblown.

disagree. Players need time to adapt. Some need more than others. Nothing to do with how good they are, you can’t measure it.

All of this is just silly logic, to be honest. Just because players are being picked ahead of him, for whatever reason, doesn’t mean that in the next year VdB can kick on and get a foothold in the starting 11 and it certainly doesn’t mean he should be sold just because players are currently doing better than him.

Fred was garbage not long ago, now look at him. Pereira was starting a tonne of games not long ago, now he’s fecked off.

We can’t be getting rid of international footballers in their first 6 months just because they’re not currently in favour.
I acknowledged that my original statement wasn’t worded in the way that I meant it. From the club’s point of view it’s fantastic to have a player if Donny’s caliber on the squad.

What I’m suggesting is that from Donny’s point of view being fourth of fifth deep behind the likes of Daniel James and Juan Mata is a concern. It can’t be argued that Donny Is an inferior footballer to James. I love Mata and he has his uses, but he’s just not nearly as dynamic as Donny.

Your observation re Pereira argues my point. Ole gave AP tons of games and yet gives VdB only garbage minutes.

We’re flying high and entertaining hopes of lifting the PL trophy so it has to be said Ole is getting it right. I’m only suggesting that if Donny ends up being a passenger on the bench this season, watching James, Mata, McFred all get starts over him, that we couldn’t blame for looking for another club going into next season.

Yeah I’m responding directly to your second post. The bottom line is that both United and VdB won’t want to quit on each other within just 6 months. VdB is here to fight for a place and we need him.

My point about Pereira is that he’s similar to James’ position now in a way. He’s getting undeserved minutes ahead of players who should be getting them instead - which is exactly what happened given time and it will with VdB.

The last point is a fair point but then I wouldn’t care about keeping him if he wanted to quit after a few months behind some ageing and inferior players. His time will come

If Donny is going to leave, it would be after 12 and not 6 months. Or maybe after a second year. But no, not in the next few days, thus six months.

Who could Donny displace in the starting XI? Not Bruno. Not Pogba. He’s not a DM so not Matic.

We replaced Pereira with Bruno, who’s been on all world form since his arrival. But before that Ole gave AP a run of games to prove whether he had it and of course he proved he didn’t. Pre-Bruno Ole had to look up and down the squad, but with Bruno on now, and with Pogba best to his near best it’s hard to see what circumstances would allow Donny to contribute on a consistent basis with the benefit of those two players on the pitch.

If Donny is consigned to being a squad player for us, not even being given minutes to see out a match against Villa — watching a substantially inferior player in James getting those minutes — it’s hard to imagine him being content with that.

Dan James and Jesse Lingard would be content to be long term squad player’s first United and there’s a lot to be said for having such players, but I cannot imagine a player of VdB’s proven quality being content with that.

Just so I’m clear, I’m very happy with the job Ole is doing.

Personally would like to see him given another go alongside Fred. I get that he's not a natural DM but I don't think he has to be. From what I've seen of him (assuming he's not being awful in training) I think he's got a good work ethic, happy to get stuck in and whilst he's not the strongest I also don't think he's weak. I don't see why he couldn't play alongside Fred or at least that it's not worth a go as McT for me is limited.

Ideally we would want someone who is basically a Carrick, someone who can shield the defence and pass well however based on squad that we have I think VDB is worth a go. What he might not have in the physicality of a McT he makes up for in being a lot better on the ball. At the moment McT I think overly relies on his physicality and takes too long to find a pass and can be sloppy with his passing which means that we don't control games well. VDB I think would help us quickly recycle the ball and keep it moving which would help our attack but also our ability to control a game which in turn means we shouldn't have to work as hard.

We shouldn't need to have 2 DMs if we keep the ball better. It's not like we have attackers who don't defend, all our players generally work quite hard and particularly in Bruno if anything he tracks back too much and if we can keep Baily fit and playing as he is that adds more cover in defence as his pace means he should be able to help us defend situations which a Lindelof/Maguire partnership isn't well matched to do.

No chance. He'll get 30mins vs Watford.
There were games he could've played, Ole went for other options every time. Whatever is happening with Donny, I don't expect him to feature much this season at this point.
He started against Everton 2 weeks at Goodison park... he'll definitely start against Watford

I’m no fan of James, & am not particularly pro-OgS but how do you come to this conclusion?

The manager spends more time with them than any of us so I’m going to give him credit for selecting the team/subs to use based on their performances throughout the week.

If James is getting minutes ahead of the Lingards & current VdB then he’s deserving of them.

His time may come like you say but at this point in his United career he’s getting what he deserves; he needs to make not picking him difficult which he obviously hasn’t if the manager isn’t giving him chances off the bench.

That’s not always the case though is it? Sometimes managers choose ‘safer’ options - he knows James will at least carry the ball forward with pace. He did in a way, but did fecking stupid shit like bring it inside rather than to the corner. VdB will get a chance ahead of these sort of players.

We’re not discussing ‘safer’ though we’re discussing ‘deserving’ which VdB simply isn’t currently.

He’s in direct opposition with Matic, Fred, McTom & Pogba - also as a replacement for Bruno if/when rested but it’s not a competition at this point; I’d also argue Pogba is simply a better player but if you include James, VdB isn’t getting game time ahead of 4 players so the conclusion has to be he doesn’t currently deserve more than he’s getting.

I agree VdB will get chances but given his performances so far I’m just not sure he deserves to be handed more than he is getting.

If I'm VDB and I watched Pogba, Rashford, Martial & Bruno vs Aston Villa on the bench, I would be thinking to improve myself and work harder to make improvement so I can reach the United's level standard because I'm still not yet as good as those four (the standard) at the moment.

To be fair if he can't get starts over James, Mata, McTominay and Fred then we are the ones who should be looking to ship him out. He's a 35M player, he should be a reliable bench option at least.

I wonder why ole once had trusted him enough for him to come on for Pogba as a sub against Crystal palace on his debut/our first PL game and that's not happening anymore.

Maybe Ole knows he is a good player, but is a player we already have - a goal scoring midfielder and what we need is something different in midfield.

When you look at Ole targeting Grealish- you cant really say he is an understudy to Bruno Fernandes, they play differently, he is a different option. Likewise Grealish is a different style player to Rashford on the left.

Van De Beek has added Squad Depth but has added it because he has added something we already had.

I think maybe Ole isnt playing him to not ruin his hype, to keep his transfer valuation and then sell the guy off if Woodward bought him because Grealish fell through, since this was quite last minute aswell

I don't know of Ole can necessarily see that Van De Beek is a little bit like Muller, half a forward/half a midfielder- but then again so is Bruno Fernandes isnt he?

And that's why he may struggle to get chances here, not because he is rubbish; but because he is blocked from playing his proper role by our best player and arguably one of the top 5 worlds best at the moment.

Never saw him in the Dutch league until he joined United. And my first impression of him was he was sharp, good engine, runs the midfield yards almost effortlessly. But feel he needs a bit more composure and confidence to hold on to the ball, allow the game to open up, and run the game a little. He's way to quick to first time it back to the passer or whoever and move. Not enough for a midfielder looking to make their name at United.

I’d say he needs a loan to a PL side where he’ll start regularly to speed up his acclimatisation to the league, as per what rumours say we seem to be planning now. On the other hand though, having players with as much quality as VdB to bring off the bench to change a game was what served City so well in their recent title-winning seasons. They could bring on Bernardo, Mahrez and Jesus to turn a draw into a win at the snap of a finger, and now, we have as much quality on the bench in Mason, Cavani and VdB. Do we want to lose that? I’m not so sure. To win the big titles, we need big players on our bench too, chomping at the bit to win us the game.

I think it would be a very bad move to loan him out.

no guarantee that the other club would play him, and we’ve fallen foul of that before.

it does seem there’s a lot of noise around James going out on loan, and whilst clearly not in the position, that’s one squad player down who has had a few minutes this season.

a couple of injuries to Pogba, Bruno, and throw in a suspension then we would soon regret any loan for DVDB.

the games are coming thick and fast, and playing weekend/ midweek for months with no winter break will take its toll.

he might not be getting game time now, but we will need him.

Exactly, patience is always needed if a player struggles, specially when you can see some quality in him. If a player hit the ground running then good for him but like you said, every situation is different.

I'm intrigued by the idea of selling Martial and buying a prime RW and just giving Van De Beek some games as a false 9 option behind Cavani or Greenwood, who I'd like to see more centrally.

Rashford(James)-----------------Cavani(Greenwood, VDB)----------------------RW(Diallo)
----------------------------------------------------Bruno(VDB)----------------------------------------------------
---------------------Fred (VDB, Caicedo)------------------DM(McTominay)------------------------

is 12 guys for 6 spots, you can loan Pellistri to get another wide option or plug him in for James if he goes. The occasional game for Puigmal (19, scoring from midfield and versatile) or another youth player wouldn't be so bad, we also realistically would somehow probably will keep Mata, Matic or Lingard for another season.

Selling Martial? so VDB can play as a false 9?

Thanks God you're not the one who run United

De Telegraaf telling him to pack his bags if he isn't involved against Citeh :lol:. Also mentions his Euro spot might be in danger if he keeps getting overlooked.

Still do wonder about what our plan for him was if he was going to become 5th or 6th choice in the MF after coming. Could've used that money on a needed DM/holding mid

A bit worried about him. The fact that pogba who will be leaving is starting ahead of him, does not look well for Donny.

Not that I'm too worried about van de Beek, but he was already dropped to bench in last Netherlands games (after joining United and not playing much), wasn't he?

Why are you worried ?
Pogba is outperforming him, comfortably too.

If Beek wants to make it here then, for the time being, he has to dig in and improve. He'll get ample chances this season.

Looking at his Holland career and he's always been a squadie. He did play two 90 minutes out of three in one break (he was benched for the other game) before he joined United but he's not a first name on the team sheet.

Seems unlikely they'd drop him from the squad altogether.

Pogba is in excellent form. Pogba is also world class, so when a world class player is in excellent form, there's nothing Donny or any inferior or younger player can do to stop it.

He knew what he was signing up for and he will get game time.

See Fabinho - first year at Liverpool, barely played. Sometimes it takes 6-12 months to bed a player in.

I believe he will come good, and turn out to be a good signing for United. Some fans have no patience. If Ole thought it was beneficial to bed him in slowly over 12 months, I trust thats the correct decision. Why? Because he trains him every day, mentors him every day and speaks with him. We dont. If Ole thought Donny had the potential to blow the PL apart like Bruno did, I'm sure he'd be playing every week.

Trust the process. Pogba will be on his way, thats an extra 30 games per season he'll get.

Alright then, nothing to worry about I guess.

By the way, I don't think his performances were bad, certainly not that bad to be completely left out of squad (which seems to be the case). I think Ole management of the squad in general has been top notch this season, there is something odd about van de Beek.
