Maybe so, maybe not.....proving himself as a back up to me anyway is a totally different thing, Williams may have failed that this season....but since it has been a grand total of very few games, has that harmed us this past season in the grand scheme of things in comparison to some of our starting eleven players quality over a season?

Why are we so intent on signing back up players when our first eleven is seriously short in a few areas. Unless we are either spending over £200m, making several big sales or make some wonder buys at cheap prices......we cant make the 4/5 signings we need to AND Trippier. Lets be honest, we are unlikely to do any of these things so we will be lucky to make 3 signings I feel this summer, if that is the case improving our competition in right back would be an utter waste of one and part of the transfer kitty for me.
Because signing Sancho, a CB, and a backup right back is still realistic transfer window and doesn’t require over £200m spending. It was similar to 19/20 summer, our expensive signing (80m) was Maguire, the mid signing (50m) was Bissaka, and cheap (15m) was James. This summer could be 80m Sancho, 50m CB, 15m-20m backup right back.

feck sake we've been discussing personal terms for over a year now. Are we negotiating through the medium of charades or something.
 it’s funny because Romano always maintained that we’d agreed personal terms last summer. Obviously talks would have to begin again, but you’d expect them to be fairly straightforward if they were agreed last September

So signing the exact same positions we did two years ago would be progression? We signed a cheap winger in an area we are not even strong in and we need to sign a new winger (we have already signed 3 in the last two years as well as Greenwood comign through, its crazy), we signed a quality centre back when we needed two but got that cheap winger instead and here we are two years later needing a right winger and a centre back. The window you mention, in ayears time we still have no central midfielders of quality defensively and two years later we probably need a new second choice right back as Trippier is 32.

There are the likes of Romero and Romagnoli possibly available for around £30m, that would leave £40m which buys plently of quality central midfielders.....not goin gto go on and on, we all have our opinions and is no definitive right and wrong. But though you are making some good points, I simply fail to see how juggling around whatever finances we have that spending £20m on a second choice right back within our current squad is good business this summer

Come on mate, we only signed 1 centre back not 2 centre backs two years ago, it’s not rocket science why we want to sign another one to make progress in upgrading our squad. Stop buying players for punt anymore who can’t even get starting XI anymore like Romagnoli, he‘s below Kjaer and Tomori in pecking order now and failed to even make it into Italy national team. Romero who was reported for 40m before Pirlo was sacked and now they have allegri as the manager who knows if the new manager wants him to stay and beside, that’s the same value as Varane.

James was never good enough, he was signed for 15m just to buy us more time for us to get Sancho. We couldn’t get Sancho 2 years ago because we weren’t in CL. We have been crying out loud for top quality winger so don’t start telling me signing one is not the direction we should be aiming for.

Signing a backup right back for 15m is nothing and still a necessary one because we can’t rely on our luck anymore hoping Bissaka can stay injury free. It’s hard to find top quality midfielder for 15m-25m and instead we put it on hold and sign a backup right back. Can’t sign everybody in one window.

Man, PSG have really taken Barcelona to the cleaners, starting with the Neymar saga.

Feels so similar to when Willian was about to sign for Spurs but then Chelsea came in for him at the very last minute and he signed for them instead.
I still think he would end at Barcelona it seems more like Frankie de Jong saga where something similar was reported and he still ended up there .
Wijnaldum would sign with Barcelona and it would be reported how he believes in new Barcelona project and how he accepted even lesser financial package to be part of it .

Is he really so good that everyone wants him?

Sounds like he's really shafted Liverpool, going on a free.
I don't think any players really shaft clubs by leaving on a free. At least not big clubs.

He wanted a long contract. With the age of our first team, we can't hand those out to all of them. That's basically why he's leaving. He wanted to stay, but not at all costs, we wanted to keep him but not at all costs. He's leaving on good terms. Will be missed, but this is a decent time to refresh our midfield a bit as it is.

I think he's superb. I remember thinking he was quality at Newcastle, and then again for Van Gaal in that run Holland went on at the World Cup.

Then he was a key player in a Liverpool side that won a CL and a league title as well. They will be a weaker side without him.

Think he'd be a good replacement for Xhaka. Question marks over him but would be a worthy punt for Arsenal.

Good first few months and has faded, but we have Laird coming back who has done well on loan. So that is two back ups for Bissaka who is never injured. If Laird gets opportunities at times and does ok, then release WIlliams. See little points in selling him and then spending £20m on Trippier at this point unless we are gettign £20m, which we arent
We also have Dalot

One year too late, but will it finally succeed? At least several of the most important players involved in the transition feel increasingly confident that things are going well.

Odd move in my view. Neves looked like he might rip up trees a few years ago when he was scoring screamers in the championship, but a couple of years in that Prem has shown him to be solid but not outstanding at this level. I guess Arsenal aren’t attracting mega stars this summer, but it feels like they’re aiming low here.

Be interesting to see him in a team that dominates the ball and aren't as negative as that Wolves side have been.
